Things that are actually pretty weird when you think about them?

I've just been thinking about this as I've been lay in the bath.

I'm currently pregnant and baby goes mad when I'm in the bath and I was watching him kicking and squirming inside me and just thought... This is actually pretty odd when you think about it. I have a living thing that's moving around inside me!

A friend had to have a blood transfusion not so long ago and she can't think about that for long without feeling squeamish that someone else's blood was inside her!

What other things do you find strange when you really think about them?

Sorry @lazysundayafteroons, my message was directed at @looselegs not you .

Fluffycloudland77 · 29/10/2020 19:50

That we kill each other, other animals fight but try to avoid it but we plan murders & have wars that go on for decades.

Like life is just too easy & to jazz it up a bit we'll kill each other off.

It’s such bonkers behaviour. Also people seem to genuinely think they’ll get away with it too.

I wonder if murder rates were lower when the fight for lif was so much harder?.

purrswhileheeats · 29/10/2020 19:49

The notion of beauty also baffles me. Who decided that certain features are beautiful as opposed to others? And yet we're all drawn to beauty, be it in humans or nature.

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 29/10/2020 19:48

@Lazysundayafternoons if your children had been conceived a month earlier then they would be different people. Different egg and different sperm. It's not unknowable. They are who they are because of your egg in the month they were conceived and the winning sperm that reached it first (upwards of 40 million in each ejaculation).

@PutItInYourPocket

Hair. We make such a fuss of the hair on our head but shave other hairy areas. Underarm pixie cut or minge bob anyone ?

On the subject of hair, eyebrows.

I've got random patches of hair on my face above my eyes. I wouldn't want patches of hair to grow anywhere else on my face. It sounds like it would be gross but we'd look so weird without them.

Imagine if that just hadn't happened when we were evolving and we were all just getting about eyebrow-less and it was normal.

But eyebrows aren't random as they serve a purpose..

The fact that this exact second right now is the youngest you've ever been and the oldest you've ever been
Well that's not true. The youngest I have ever been is when I was just born Confused
looselegs · 29/10/2020 19:35

@Lazysundayafternoons yes! I do that!
What would my kids be like if they were conceived a month earlier, or later?
My son is gay- would he have been gay if he was conceived at another time?
(Not that it bothers me that he's gay- was just wondering 😁)
Same with my daughter- would she have the mental health issues that she has if she was conceived a month earlier?
Weird, isn't it, and something we'll never know!

bemusedmoose · 29/10/2020 19:29

Honey - a jar of bee vomit, yum! (i do love it though)

Personality - what makes you who you are and where does it go when you die?

The universe - if it is infinite how does that work? We have no comprehension of something that never ends. But if it does end - what's on the other side? Because to have an end means that we are contained within something.

The night sky - what we see is so old some of what we are looking at hasn't existed for years.

Religion - that people can believe in an invisible omnipresent being so much they shape their lives around it. Yet won't believe covid exists.

FelicisNox · 29/10/2020 19:28

Diamonds: turning a lump of black coal into a shiny rock is literally magic and then we worship these shiny things as signs of true love as decided by Tiffany.

Weird.

Also the English language: so many words that sound the same but are spelled differently and have totally different meanings. Don't get me started!

MyLifeWTF · 29/10/2020 19:24

Not so much weird but fascinating, that every single thing on the planet has been birthed or grown to fully adapt to what it is, if that makes sense.

Like fish are born with gills because they live under water, some animals are born with longer noses to do what they do, some animals are born with extra fur because they live in colder climates. Like that is biological, it's not man made. They didnt think oh we live in a cold country so let's make extra fur, no they were born like that. Its mind blowing.

The fact that in order to go to sleep, we lay down and pretend to be asleep.

Standrewsschool · 29/10/2020 19:16

What sometimes amazes me is that everyone is living their own individual lives. Sometimes when I’m in a traffic jam, I look around and there’s everyone else, living their own individual lives, even though we’re all on the same road at that time.

Fire - I know it’s comprised of oxygen, fuel and heat, but it’s still a weird substance.

bemusedmoose · 29/10/2020 19:15

Milk. Bovine booby juice. Breast milk from another species in a glass.... Why!? Wouldn't drink a glass of human milk as a grown up, no other species on earth has milk past infancy.... So why do we have cow and goat milk? Its not as hot as high in calcium as people are lead to believe and is very high in sugar (natural yes but still sugar) plus the protein is too large to digest properly.

HorizonNannies · 29/10/2020 19:12

That's why I'm vegan. Along with another animal taking my baby so that they can have my milk.

LakieLady · 29/10/2020 19:11

@sorrysaywhatnow

I've always found it amazing that because women are born with all their eggs, I was there at my own mothers birth, and my daughter was present (in some form) at mine.
But your eggs were present when you were inside your mother, as were your daughter's, and her daughter's daughters....

... all nesting, like very complicated Russian dolls.

Sleeplikeababy · 29/10/2020 19:10

That it’s perfectly normal to drink milk designed for baby cows but would be weird to drink milk designed for baby humans (beyond infancy anyway)

queenbee72 · 29/10/2020 18:58

@Onxob

Milk! 🥛 I'm a city girl so never gave it much thought until I married DH who's the son of dairy farmers. We live there now and I fine the whole thing fascinating and horrendous. Even more so when I had DD1 and was breastfeeding.

We DRINK the milk of a random animal, there's a whole industry constructed around it, we make sure these animals get pregnant every year and if the bull can't do it someone's actual job is to inseminate cows (not literally Grin but you know!) that's a job?! And then worst of all, we take the babies away from their mum's more or less straight away so we can benefit from the milk. What the actual fuck is all that about?

The cows cry for the calves for days - it's unspeakably cruel and so very random. Yet we're still so squeamish about breastfeeding?!! If you suggested harvesting breast milk for human consumption (why haven't we done that?!) people would be so disgusted - cognitive dissonance or what?

I should probably be a vegan really. It's just all so bloody weird when you think about it/see it in action every year.

Not all farms. Organic farm by me leaves the calves for a considerable time (I can’t remember exactly but it did seem impressive) and then brings in surrogates. It even keeps the boy calves for 18 months, allowing them grazing time and to keep having milk.
queenbee72 · 29/10/2020 18:49

@TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet

It’s weird that one day I decided I wanted a pet so I went somewhere, looked at a cat and said yep I’ll take that one and now she just lives in my house with me. I wonder how weird it must have been for her too. She was born in one house, then I went to look at her and basically to her view stole her from her territory and took her to my territory to share it with me?
Love this!! Totally weird.
SimonJT · 29/10/2020 18:39

The universe, where the hell is it, what is it expanding into?!

purrswhileheeats · 29/10/2020 18:36

The solar system and the way the planets just keep moving around each other. I watch the sunset every evening and without fail the sun always sets! One day I'll be sitting there expectantly and the planets will decide nah, we ain't doing that today Grin

numberoneson · 29/10/2020 18:31

Electricity. I know it exists, but I'll never manage to understand how it works!

wizzbangfizz · 29/10/2020 18:20

The deep sea, to think there are depths we haven't yet plumbed or understood.

slowlyfailingaway · 29/10/2020 18:09

Space, it’s mind boggling to me how there is no end, how can it possibly be no end, and how many lost things are floating around in the ‘end’

MrsAvocet · 29/10/2020 18:05

Anaesthesia/surgery. Someone gives you a cocktail of drugs that renders you temporarily unconscious and then keeps you alive whilst someone else does stuff that would under other circumstances probably kill you. Very strange. Good, but quite odd.

Earthling1994 · 29/10/2020 18:05

Drinking cow milk. Why do so many people think it’s ‘healthy’ to drink the breastmilk from some random cow that’s designed to grow a calf?
And eating eggs. I don’t even eat my friends ovulations, let alone ovulations from a chicken. Weird.
