Things that are actually pretty weird when you think about them?

I've just been thinking about this as I've been lay in the bath.

I'm currently pregnant and baby goes mad when I'm in the bath and I was watching him kicking and squirming inside me and just thought... This is actually pretty odd when you think about it. I have a living thing that's moving around inside me!

A friend had to have a blood transfusion not so long ago and she can't think about that for long without feeling squeamish that someone else's blood was inside her!

What other things do you find strange when you really think about them?

@dudsville I always think the same about dancing. I usually dance if I’ve had a few drinks but if I’m sober I think WTAF it’s just so weird just moving body parts round.

Also as a few people have said, the making babies thing. I always say obviously I know how they are made but it still blows my mind that you can actually make a new human being. Amazing.

The moon is an actual place, not just a light in the sky.

And all of the people who had to have had sex in order to produce me!

Eckhart · 29/10/2020 20:49

@nildesparandum

Your post blew my mind. That must be absolutely amazing, to see similarities to your husband, generations down the line.

Congratulations on your dynasty!

Dandelionflower · 29/10/2020 20:45

Eye contact. Freaks me out.

nildesparandum · 29/10/2020 20:44

Re to pp about adult children.
I am the mother of a grandfather. Yes that baby lying inside me all those years ago has now produced children of his own, and now his children are producing children. Also one of them looks very much like his great grandfather, my late husband, and is a carbon copy in personality of his grandfather, my son.

Graphista · 29/10/2020 20:39

@Spelunking You're very welcome I find looking at those maps and the ones with the countries shown properly to scale (Africa is WAY bigger than you probably thought) so disconcerting! I'm so used to the norther and European centric ones!

The pregnancy/alien thing, my ex was SO inexperienced and uneducated on "women's things" it was quite shocking! The first time the baby visibly moved in my belly that he saw he freaked the fuck out and needed persuading it was totally normal! He phoned his mum to ask her! 😂😂

When he got accidentally squirted in the face with breast milk the first time he threw up!

@StrictlyAFemaleFemale I'm not a fan of school uniform myself. It's not the leveller or unifier it's claimed to be

@ShizeItsWeegie interesting as I'm frequently criticised for not drinking enough. I rarely feel thirsty but can reach the point I have a headache that I know means I need a drink! I have to remind myself

Angelina82 · 29/10/2020 20:38

Life. What are we all doing here? What is the point of it all?

Eckhart · 29/10/2020 20:33

@SleepOhHowIMissYou

Love the video. I consider myself re-educated. The multi-party-blower is fab!

MilkLady02 · 29/10/2020 20:31

While walking to work once I was desperate for a wee and I looked all along the residential street thinking how weird it was that I was surrounded by hundreds of toilets in peoples homes but I couldn’t use them. It made me wonder, what’s least socially acceptable? Knocking on a stranger’s door to ask to use their toilet, or peeing in a bush outside their front garden? (Luckily I made it to work in the nick of time!!)

That's not what they're called, though. If you asked someone for a party blowout, they'd say 'What?'

Or were you giving them names?
If I were to name them they'd be called Keith and Nigel (Keith being the blowout, obviously).

Sunsetdawn · 29/10/2020 20:22

Sex. Might be my peri menopausal-ness but I've come to the conclusion that that's pretty weird.

Eckhart · 29/10/2020 20:20

@MagentaRocks @PizzzaExpressWoking

Thanks. They have loads of names, all descriptions, rather than one specific name that everybody would recognise. Like saying 'Wheeled Passenger Box' because of not having the word 'car'.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Party_horn

I didn't know they were called 'checkout dividers' and neither has anyone I've asked. One frined invented the term 'shopper-stopper' which I quite like.

napody · 29/10/2020 20:19

Hmm, have just googled and its 98% of atoms every year, but some in bones and tooth enamel hang around permanently. Your liver is totally replaced every 6 weeks....

napody · 29/10/2020 20:16

@FastFood

I was listening to Verdi's Requiem the other day, the very dramatic Dies Irae and thought: it's basically air being moved around metal, wood and human flesh.

Also:
how do you get into ski jump? How do you even start?

How do you make a living as a philosopher?

Why having 12 months of 30,31 or 28 days rather than 13 months of 28 days?
Will we ever update the calendar system?

Why no one cares that September, October, November and December are respectively the 9th,10th, 11th and 12th months when their names clearly indicate that they should be 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th?

Oh my God! The calendar ones blew my mind. 13 months of 28 days.... of course we should have that!

For me it's the one about all the atoms in your body being replaced so none of the original you is left....can't remember how often this happens though!

Mikki69 · 29/10/2020 20:10

Bottled water. How something that has been filtered through glaciers or volcanoes for thousands of years gets put in to a bottle with a best before date!

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 29/10/2020 20:08

@Eckhart the ones that blow out are called party blowouts and the horns with paper fringes are blowers. Google the term and you'll get lots of opportunities to buy them, or give Carol Middleton a ring, she'll tell you. Wink

Celestine70 · 29/10/2020 20:07

The size of the universe.

paintedsmile77 · 29/10/2020 20:07

Consciousness, and love.....and the Universe. That we have our own sun and moon that is so perfectly aligned to earth to sustain life. A fraction out either way would make life impossible. The odds of that happening by chance are incalculable, comparable to a blind man picking up a coloured grain of sand out of all the deserts in the world by chance. It's mind blowing.

Ravenesque · 29/10/2020 20:06

Cats or dogs. Sometimes I look at one of my two cats and think, well this is fucking mental, you are a living creature, what do you think, what is this whole set up to you? I get a whole "space is big" mess up in my head and have to look away and not think about it.

Sex. If you really think about it, it's the most ridiculous thing ever. I feel as though our brains must do some compartmentalising when we do the sex to stop us from hooting with laughter about it. I mean seriously, it is so strange.

Also, the notion of reality. Sometimes I just stop and think, what is real, is all of this real, am I real? And I'm having another "space is big" mess up in my head and everything is just really weird. That mostly happens when I suddenly see things as though it's a video or a film and not real looking. I'm having it now because I'm talking about it. What even are fingers?

They are called party blowers - google them.

And checkout dividers.

PizzzaExpressWoking · 29/10/2020 20:01

They're called party blowers (I assume "blowout" is an autocorrect) or party horns. They have various different names but those are the two main ones.

Checkout divider is pretty much universal (well, in English at least).

Eckhart · 29/10/2020 19:59

Eckhart · 29/10/2020 19:57

On the subject of 'who would our children be if they'd been conceived 3 seconds later', and 'a woman already has all her eggs when she is born'... think of all the millions of children that don't get conceived. The potential of each couple is phenomenal. And quite terrifying.

I mean, for example, if Hitler had been conceived 3 seconds later, he wouldn't have been Hitler. Well, he would have been, but just that nice Adolph bloke, who's always got a kind word for everyone (or something)

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 29/10/2020 19:56
@Bettina500

I started compiling a list of things we don't have a word for in English.

So far, I only have: Those things you blow at parties, that unfurl lengthways and whistle; the thing you put between your shopping and the next person's shopping on the conveyor belt at the supermarket till; another one I can't remember.

Can anybody think of any others?
Check out dividers

And

Party blowout
