Things that are actually pretty weird when you think about them?

I've just been thinking about this as I've been lay in the bath.

I'm currently pregnant and baby goes mad when I'm in the bath and I was watching him kicking and squirming inside me and just thought... This is actually pretty odd when you think about it. I have a living thing that's moving around inside me!

A friend had to have a blood transfusion not so long ago and she can't think about that for long without feeling squeamish that someone else's blood was inside her!

What other things do you find strange when you really think about them?

Nah! I’ve just picked this up before settling in to bed and now I’m in some type of a spiralled descent into a never ending hole of thoughts!
BUT time is also a weird one for me!

y0rkier0se · 29/10/2020 22:34

The ocean! It’s deeper than the tallest parts of the earth... that blows my mind!

BlackLetterDay · 29/10/2020 22:31

I have been desensitised to trypophobia thanks to the Internet, well done Suriname toad lol

xwizbit · 29/10/2020 22:30

Eggs. Whenever I cook an egg I think how weird it is that I'm going to eat a chickens period. Same with bacon, I'm going to eat fried slices of actual pig with a chickens period on the side.... Weird.
Dancing. Music comes on and we start to flail our arms and legs around and we stand opposite each other and do it together.
Clapping. Someone does something we like and we smack our hands together frantically Grin

I quite like the concept of last thursdayism where we could have been plonked here with all memories intact just last Thursday Grin. Some people are so certain about their beliefs, most people in fact, in reality the complete absurdity of our existence, having a cuppa on a spinning sphere in the middle of infinity is pretty fucking mental. Anything could be true.

Languages, but for a slightly different reason. I get that if I point at a bag and say ‘bag’ and a French person points at a bag and says ‘sac’, I could surmise that ‘sac’ is the equivalent French word for bag. BUT how in the world did people first translate the more abstract things? Say for example I wanted to describe the rain as drizzly, or a diamond as ‘sparkling’ rather than ‘shiny’... just HOW?!!!

Eckhart · 29/10/2020 22:25

I should have explained that that's what children's skulls are like before they lose their milk teeth. It's a real trypophobia trigger...

Eckhart · 29/10/2020 22:23

This.

Errr....knowledge!

wishihadrubyslippers · 29/10/2020 22:21

This is such a great thread!

Not weird as such, but I often wonder what it must have been like to be intelligent at a time when access to education was so limited. What did people do with their minds if they didn't know how to read and write?
I mean, I must have had forebears who were no less intelligent than I am but who spent their lives never having seen a book.
Did they get bored? Feel frustrated?
I suppose they must have contributed to collective folk knoxmwledge, those who would be engineers today were probably the ones who devised more efficient ways of doing things. Then there would have been the gifted storytellers, the healers and so on.
Off to put my special sleeping clothes on now Grin

My brain really hurts when I think about the universe and how vast it is and how tiny WE (Earth) are, let alone how tiny we as individuals are...
ouch!! 🤕🤕

ohcarolina2001 · 29/10/2020 22:17

That humans sleep for about 1/3 of each 24 hour period in order to be able to function for the other 2/3 of the time.
You wouldn't accept a TV or washing machine that only worked 2/3 of the time!

FastnetLundyRockall · 29/10/2020 22:16

Teeth. Obviously I know their purpose, I just find it weird that these random bits of calcified tissue are just sitting in my mouth in two rows and will outlast everything but bones and hair.
Video call meetings for work. They remind me too much of séances.

CanSomeoneElsePickMyName · 29/10/2020 21:58

Sleeping. That your body needs a certain amount to keep going abs it's like your computer going into sleep mode.

"Why no one cares that September, October, November and December are respectively the 9th,10th, 11th and 12th months when their names clearly indicate that they should be 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th?"

They used to be but we added a couple, cant remember which though

Nottherealslimshady · 29/10/2020 21:52

The brain named itself.

Akire · 29/10/2020 21:45

Just opened fridge at thought oh theres dead chicken inside.

Sweetcheeks21 · 29/10/2020 21:41

Putting a living tree inside our house in December till it dies. Weird Confused

shergar · 29/10/2020 21:40

At the age of 7 I started wondering in school assembly why I was me, and not someone else, and whether I was the same person every day, or whether we flirt between bodies in our sleep and wake with the memories of that person and think we’ve always been there. Had a panic attack and had to run into the playground to breathe. Still can’t understand why I’m me and not someone else. How do we get here? It’s mad.

musicnotesand · 29/10/2020 21:16

@FastFood

I was listening to Verdi's Requiem the other day, the very dramatic Dies Irae and thought: it's basically air being moved around metal, wood and human flesh.

Also:
how do you get into ski jump? How do you even start?

How do you make a living as a philosopher?

Why having 12 months of 30,31 or 28 days rather than 13 months of 28 days?
Will we ever update the calendar system?

Why no one cares that September, October, November and December are respectively the 9th,10th, 11th and 12th months when their names clearly indicate that they should be 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th?

The months and the not being the 8th month etc.

Fucking.

Hell.

Sunbathing
Lying on beaches half naked.
I always think aliens would be really confused by that

R3ALLY · 29/10/2020 21:03

Babies definitely. My eldest is as tall as me now and it blows my mind that he was once inside me. Also meeting someone and the HUGENESS of deciding to stay with them for the rest of your life. Such a scary leap into the unknown

nildesparandum · 29/10/2020 20:58

@Eckhart

Thankyou.

lachy · 29/10/2020 20:56

That apparently there are more stars in the universe than there are grains of sand on the earth.

The numbers are so incomprehensible I just had to nod mutely when DH confirmed it was actually true.
