Inspired by the nice little thread about nice little things...
What is the nicest thing(s) that anyone has ever done for you?
Big or small, I want to hear it all!

Married a man who made me the person I always should have been and who my siblings aren't because of a shit childhood. He made me normal and a good mum and has supported me through my degree and will continue to do so through my masters. Who tells my dad where to go when he sneers at me that I think I'm better than everyone else because I'm hopefully achieving.

And yet I truly don't even deserve him

When I went into premature labour at 32 weeks I rang my brother, 100 miles away, to come and pick up my daughter from Nursery while we went to hospital. He came, with his girlfriend, and they didn’t go home again until I eventually delivered at 38 weeks. I was in hospital a lot of the time and they took over with DD so my husband could keep working.

Another one- I had a car accident where a young lad went into the back of me at an island. He was absolutely livid and was circling my car shouting at me and swearing. Another driver stopped, got out, and stood between my car window and him so he couldn’t get to me. She didn’t speak a word, just stood there as a barrier. I was completely in shock and very upset and scared and she just stood while I talked to the police etc and then blocked the traffic so I could pull from left lane to turn right. I didn’t even manage to thank her. She was a complete angel and I wish I knew who she was. (As an aside, the police called the lads mum and she went absolutely fish wife at her son in front of me, made him apologise and promised that she’d deal with all the insurance so I never had to speak to him again. I was very relieved!)

A small thing, but I still remember one morning, after dropping DC1&2 at school. I was starving and had 3 month old DC3 with me. He was a really bad sleeper but had dropped off so I ordered beans on toast & a cup of tea. Just as it arrived, he woke up demanding a feed. No way round it, he would have screamed the place down.

A lovely, lovely lady came over, cut up my beans on toast for me,and positioned everything on the table so I could eat/drink with one hand while he fed.

I often wonder if she had any idea of quite what a difference she made to me that day - I was on the point of tears.

I have a couple.
Our wedding was overseas, in a place very dear to me & my husband, and we had with us just a couple of family members and a couple of friends who lived there. We didnt have a photographer, reception or anything like that. Through choice we kept things small and private. We went to visit our friends at their home a couple of days later and they had made us a beautiful cake! It was so thoughtful and kind of them.

I've suffered with arthritic feet since childhood, and other forms of arthritis in the year since. I've always had trouble accepting my limitations. One Saturday, years ago, I had gone into the town centre, just for a browse to get out of the house. I ended up buying more than intended, of course, and as time wore on, my pain got more & more intense and I grew more tired & distressed. I was just a couple of mins walk (for an able bodied person) from my car but could barely move for the agony. A passer-by must've seen the state I was in and she offered to take my bags and help me back to the car. That meant so much as i dont think i could have made it otherwise.
Most people would just pass by a person with a walking aid, hunched over, quietly crying and slowly hobbling. I'm so glad this woman didn't.

I was in hospital without weeks old DS..my first Mother's Day... and I was brought a full English breakfast as a treat! The HCA was lovely!

Then they made DH a Sunday dinner as well as me so that we could have a "family" meal when he and the baby came to visit.

youngscrappyandhungry · 27/02/2020 23:26

I was very ill and unable to work for several years as a result. The treatment I needed was a surgery that insurance would not cover, despite multiple appeals from my healthcare team. A family member of a family member (not blood related) heard from someone else that my insurance appeal was denied and called me up to offer a check for $30,000 (USD) to cover my treatment. Not a loan, no strings attached. He just wanted to help. He was very wealthy, but still... I was gobsmacked that someone I only spoke with a couple times a year when I'd visit at the holidays could be so generous and truly expect nothing in return.

doubleshotespresso · 27/02/2020 23:16

I had eyeball popping toothache from an abscess and was unable to pay for treatment and a complete stranger who became aware of my pain gifted me the money and refused repayment. I've never forgotten this and always think fondly of what an utterly kind and selfless thing it was to do. Still overwhelmed to this day that anybody had such humanity and generosity . I cried with relief afterwards

After a week away at head office, just been made redundant and facing 11 hour flight home
All just got to me and I sat on the phone to a colleague back home in the same situation - both in tears

The lovely lady in the airport lounge brought over a large glass of wine, a cake and some tissues and squeezed my shoulder

Recently was feeling like a rubbish parent - spending too long working etc. On a day out my dd bought me a ceramic heart with 'best mum ever' I really needed that

Going through a divorce over 20 years ago my aunt paid for me to go with her on a world trip - said she needed the company and someone to drive her, but that few weeks break did me so much good and I had a wonderful experience I will be forever grateful for

Loving this thread 🥰

discusstin · 27/02/2020 22:52

When my baby was born I was extremely ill and so was my husband, who was suffering from an as yet undiagnosed condition. We had no sleep and were so ill and exhausted that we could not even get up the stairs without sitting down.

A couple that we knew came to stay for the weekend. They took our other children to school, did the washing, the cleaning, the cooking, just did everything for us. At night, they took the new baby into their room for the night so that we could sleep. It was amazing and I am forever grateful.

AugustaLoveday · 27/02/2020 22:03

@OhWellThatsJustGreat That is so kind of you. In fact, you might might qualify for the 'nicest thing' prize, as your message is the nicest thing that has happened to me in ages!

Evidencebased · 27/02/2020 22:00

She drove through the night , so that she could be with two of my children, and I could leave at 6am, to get back to my 7 yr old son in hospital. I'd promised him I would be back there before they came to take him down for his operation in the morning.
I'd left him, reluctantly, in hospital, with his dad, as I needed to ' keep the plates spinning' with my other two children.
Spoke to Ex DH in the evening, and the hospital had moved the time of my son's surgery from 11am to 8 am. Panic!
Scratched round trying to find someone who could take my two DC from 6-7am and take them to school. No luck. Sister rang, grasped the situation, and said,' No problem, I'll drop my DC at their dad's, and drive through the night so that you can keep your promise to your son'. It took her nearly all night.

I was able to drive to hospital, in time. ,keep my panicking 7 yr old calm.

Two major surgeries, but all ok in the end.
This was 18 years ago. Shedding tears of gratitude as I write this.
Thank you Sister.
I'll always be grateful.

Mehaveit · 27/02/2020 21:44

I had left an abusive relationship and my ex had kept a piece of custom fit medical equipment that had been very expensive to buy. No use to him of course, except to hold it over me.

I attended my next medical appointment and had to confess I no longer had access to the equipment to help my recovery so I was likely to relapse after lots of hard work. I was charged far far less than the going rate for the replacement. In fact a very affordable rate which meant I could get it right away without saving. I had my replacement within a week. I didn't explain the situation at the appointment but the professional read between the lines correctly and helped me out in desperate need. It would have come out of his own pocket and I am truly forever grateful.

londonrach · 27/02/2020 21:28

@MashedPotatoBrainz. I went to a school in england once and they filled my shoe with sweets....honestly my dsis and i were blow away with it...i was only 6 but never forgotten and it was only done once. Wish we did this more regularly.

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 27/02/2020 21:19

@AugustaLoveday I have everything crossed you meet someone to do something nice for you very very soon. You sound like you truly deserve it!!!!

AugustaLoveday · 27/02/2020 20:40

I am sobbing my way through this thread, as I can't remember the last time anyone did anything nice for me. Not even make me a cup of tea. My job is to do everything and be everything for everyone else. But there are evidently good people in the world, and I hope I will meet one.

SoLongLollipops · 27/02/2020 20:35

When my mum was in her final days in hospital and I was sleeping on a mattress on the floor of her room over Christmas a couple of years ago the very softly spoken cleaner came up to me one morning and said "good morning angel" and handed me a plate with marmalade on toast.
She was the angel.

ArthurandJessie · 27/02/2020 20:13

My 90 year old nan and best friend made it possible for my husband and myself to move to Canada so we could have a better life even though it meant me leaving her behind. We are beyond close ! She was so selfless and I'll always be grateful to her more than I can express

My nc mum had collapsed whilst out shopping and I got a phone call from the ambulance service informing me of this, I met her at the ambulance as they were just down the road from me, she ended up seriously ill in hospital for weeks and as the only family member around it all fell on me. My mil was also seriously ill with terminal cancer and I have a son with ASC and additional medical needs. Both myself and my husband were trying to work full time, visit our mums in hospital and juggle child care. One of my bf's took it herself to cook us a Sunday roast, ready for whenever we wanted it, at hers, with wine and chatting and laughter. It was just what we needed.
She also took time off work to meet us at my mils wake to help with serving everyone drinks and food and to help clear up.
I have never forgotten her kindness.

Today, sitting in a carpark and attempting to get my screaming toddler into a pram whilst simultaneously fumbling around for my lost car keys. I was frazzled and feeling self conscious when the lady in the next parking space approached me, said she could see I was struggling, and went to buy my parking ticket for me to save me the job. Such a simple act of kindness but one which felt like a warm hug from the universe and I was so grateful. The smallest of acts can often have the biggest impact and if this lovely lady is a mumsnetter and recognises herself in this tale, thankyou. Thankyou for being so kind, so thoughtful and for being such a nice human being. I really needed it today and it made a world of difference. I shall endeavour to pay it forward.
