Things you assumed were normal

DH bought some weetabix to have for breakfast a few days ago and I was amazed to see him preparing it by just pouring cold milk on and then eating it like that! I can't eat weetabix now but when I was little my mum would pour the milk on, then microwave it, then mash the biscuits in to create something similar to porridge. I assumed at the time that this was the only way to eat weetabix but my husband was appalled at the very idea and after a quick google it does seem like I'm very much in the minority. So it got me thinking, what are some things that you thought were normal, but then you realised that you/your family were the only one(s) doing it like that?

Hard boiled egg sandwich, yum

Weenurse · 04/02/2020 06:23

@Elouera we call it mock chicken and it is in my 1967 country women’s association ‘ fingers and forks’ cook book.
I made some last night for my sandwich today. Yum

@fizzypoo I LOVE tinned tomatoes on toast!!! My favourite lunch!!

Also I'm a cold weetabix person! Eating it hot with a porridge consistency is weird just have porridge!

@riftgibbon

We had indoor shoes at school in the 90s. Plimsolls!

sunshineskymoon · 04/02/2020 00:40

I'm a teacher and at my school the kids wear indoor shoes. Means that the school stays cleanish no matter the weather and the kids can play on the field

When I eat Weetabix I have it with sugar and cold milk. I have to eat it while both the Weetabix and the sugar are still crunchy. I haven't had it for some years now though. I too would be sick if it had hot water or milk on it and soggy!

steppemum · 03/02/2020 23:57

ThisMomentIsMyLife my dh is dutch and only spoke dutch to our kids when they were little.
The thing was we lived overseas and so he spoke English to me, Russian t of the house and Dutch to the kids, except he just ended up speaking Dutch to all kids he met!

Mistymonday · 03/02/2020 23:48

Never heard of this until now!

RiftGibbon · 03/02/2020 23:27

My MIL told me recently that when she was at school they had 'indoor shoes' - which were like slippers but with harder soles. They came into school, took off their outdoor shoes and put on their indoor shoes.
When DC started school (some time ago) she asked if we'd had to buy indoor shoes. DH and I looked at her like this ---> Confused

She also finds it strange that I don't "see" the year as an oval with October at the top and that I don't say 'Good morning Mr Magpie' when I see one. I did once ask her how she knew if it was male or female and whether that made any difference

WestCountryLady · 03/02/2020 23:00

My brother picked up a pound coin once and said " it's amazing how they fit 100 pennies in a pound! And for years I thought there was a 100 pennies squished up inside a pound coin.

Worcester sauce is lovely in a beef dish, it brings out the taste of the meat. Of course you need to be careful if you have guests with fish allergies, as they might not be expecting it in spag bol etc.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 03/02/2020 22:46

@BillHadersNewWife I think it was to make sure she didn’t miss any!

All mushrooms also had to be washed in a colander, under the cold tap, while wearing rubber gloves.. I don’t think she believed me when I said (after seeing it on a cookery show) that you weren’t meant to wash mushrooms at all.

That said she did put Worcester sauce in the mince for shepherds pie, which I recently remembered, and did for our tea tonight (it was lovely).

My friend is French and married to a Londoner. She wanted her daughter to be bilingual so always spoke French to her while the Dad spoke English to her. The little girl thought all women spoke French and would chat away in delightful baby French to us and English to any men until she was about 4.

BillHadersNewWife · 03/02/2020 21:42

ColdTatty why did she count them?

BillHadersNewWife · 03/02/2020 21:41

Clevs me too! And I asked my mate why she buttered both sides because to me, it's just too gross and buttery and she says "Well how do you get it to stick together otherwise?'

Confused

Why does your sandwich need to stick together? You hold it together with your hand!

SazCat · 03/02/2020 21:39

Clevs My DH only butters one slice, depending what's on the sandwich I find it falls apart too easily!

Clevs · 03/02/2020 20:51

Buttering both pieces of bread in a sandwich. I've only ever buttered one piece and thought that was normal. Until I posted on here once and most of the replies said that buttering both slices was normal.

Bonnie93 · 03/02/2020 20:46

I was actually enjoying this thread until i saw the mention of cold custard...Confused

81Byerley · 03/02/2020 20:36

@thesunhasgothishatontoday OOOH! Can you still get Cremola Foam?

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 03/02/2020 20:11

Tinned tomatoes: my mum would always pour the plum ones into a bowl, count them, then cut the stalks out, before adding them to whatever she was cooking. It blew my mind when I saw someone add them directly to the saucepan!
Buttered toast: my mum (again!) hates plain buttered toast, so it just didn’t exist in my house when I was growing up. (There was always jam / marmalade / honey / whatever with the butter.) I stayed over at my bf’s house when I was about 17, and was given toast for breakfast. I just couldn’t comprehend the lack of toppings! (I do now quite enjoy buttered toast Wink).

Emeeno1 · 03/02/2020 20:04

Things you assumed were normal?

Five- year- olds hugging each other. Fuck me that thread is depressing.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 03/02/2020 19:58

one of the guys mentioned he stood up to wipe his bum

I ask again with gruesome fascination - HOW?
When you stand, your bumhole is hidden away by your bum cheeks.

And not to get TMI about it, but wouldn't there be "spreadage" when the cheeks clapped shut as you stood?

Bananabixfloof · 03/02/2020 19:43

Hot hard boiled egg mashed with butter and salt and pepper in a tea cup, and eaten with a teaspoon

Nooo, just hot salted mashed hard boiled eggs made into a sandwich. Now I've said it I want one. 😊

sueelleker · 03/02/2020 19:38

Nothing to add as such but just wondering, can you make a hot drink with Marmite like you can with Bovril, does anyone know?
I do-I don't like Bovril
