Things you assumed were normal

DH bought some weetabix to have for breakfast a few days ago and I was amazed to see him preparing it by just pouring cold milk on and then eating it like that! I can't eat weetabix now but when I was little my mum would pour the milk on, then microwave it, then mash the biscuits in to create something similar to porridge. I assumed at the time that this was the only way to eat weetabix but my husband was appalled at the very idea and after a quick google it does seem like I'm very much in the minority. So it got me thinking, what are some things that you thought were normal, but then you realised that you/your family were the only one(s) doing it like that?

Oooh oooh me me!!!

comingupafterthebreak · 01/02/2020 00:25

comingupafterthebreak · 01/02/2020 00:25

I don't like either Weetabix or Ribena.

TonOfLead · 01/02/2020 00:09

Wait, what Purplelion? People can actually see pictures in their head?

Kab30 · 31/01/2020 23:07

Importantwater....i always had either tights or stockings for my stocking....xx

Bakedpotatoandgin · 31/01/2020 22:53

Oh my goodness I just tried weetabix with a thick layer of butter and honey (no jam in) and it is amazing! I thought it would be all dry and horrible

DrFoxtrot · 31/01/2020 22:37

@BritneyPeedOnALadybug I can make myself have goosebumps too! I just think about it and a wave/ shiver goes through my body.

I though it was normal, when I was younger, for people to buy cars and sell them for more money as this was what my dad used to do Grin. I didn't know depreciation was a thing until my late teens.

I do onion dough balls, Scottish. Cheese and strawberry jam sandwiches, ice cream drinks, roasted cheese or scrambled eggs with tinned tomatoes, salt all veg, salad, chips and potatoes. No high blood pressure fortunately. Sil likes cheese and banana sandwiches and mince with an egg poached in it.

canonlydoblue · 31/01/2020 22:21

@herbsmokedchicken Do it, you won't be disappointed.

RiftGibbon · 31/01/2020 22:13

@Maxineputyourredshoeson, I had that same conversation this evening. Asked DH and DC if they could make their ears rumble and they just looked at me blankly. I tried to explain and they still looked utterly baffled.

To pick up on other things upthread

  • tea slurped from a saucer as a child; check
-tea poured between cups to cool it; check
  • drinking tea and occasionally coffee in my young childhood; check
-lemonade floats on hot 70s days;check -buttered bread sprinkled with sugar, in a bowl of hot milk when feeling poorly(again in childhood); check

This thread reminds me that me and my brother went through a phase of microwaving cheese sandwiches to melt the cheese. bit like on Alan Partridge: "that's not toast, that's hot floppy bread!"

I'm fairly sure in our house we ate salad (lettuce, tomato and cucumber) with our fingers instead of a knife and fork. Christ only knows who I did this in front of as an adult before I cottoned on. I think the logic was it's like eating carrot sticks or cucumber sticks.

Gatehouse77 · 31/01/2020 21:46

@Mummyeyes

Tell me more about the jam omelettes!!

Looking back, it makes me heave at the thought 🤢

YogaLite · 31/01/2020 21:42

Apple core eater too 😀 never met anyone who does the same, nice to know I am not alone (and not afraid of being poisoned).

I don't like milk and usually have tea with a slice of lemon. If no lemon available, I put in a splash of orange juice (or any available juice).

Also like cold desert with hot topping or the other way round.

rededucator · 31/01/2020 21:41

Gurlwiththecurl when you say everything changed do you mean your parents were surprised with your findings and then you all bathed more regularly? Did they feel embarrassed or that they were trying to keep up with the Jones's. It's a very interesting tale x

angorarabbit · 31/01/2020 21:40

Browns? does it still exist?! I'm going back to teenage summers in Pembroke in the 70s!!

duckme · 31/01/2020 21:34

@MilkTrayLimeBarrel
I love cod liver oil and malt! We used to have it when we were little too! I also used to enjoy the odd cube of raw jelly.
And raw sausage. I suspect this a Black Country thing though as a pair of elderly Black Country twins were on This Morning a few months back talking about this.
I used to love butter and sugar sandwiches too. My recent diagnosis of IBS is not so much of a mystery now come to think of it!

Maxineputyourredshoeson · 31/01/2020 21:31

@RiftGibbon I can make my ears rumble too, I’m surprised not everyone can do it! Just asked DH and it would appear he can’t and he didn’t know what the hell I was on about Grin

Historydweeb · 31/01/2020 21:21

@angorarabbit OMG, this is my local cafe!
Not been there for years but still iconic

JamieFrasersSassenach · 31/01/2020 21:12

@RiftGibbon I can make my ears rumble!!! It has never crossed my mind that some people may not be able to......

justkeeprunning5 · 31/01/2020 20:44

@meredithgrey1 I had no idea anyone ate them cold... I’ve always had them hot!

MikeAlphaMike · 31/01/2020 20:42

The crust was a treat but the heel needed to be toasted. On one side.

vincettenoir · 31/01/2020 20:42

Avocado for dessert.

MikeAlphaMike · 31/01/2020 20:40

Toast was bread grilled on one side until we got a popup toaster.

Toast or a slice of bread has jam or butter. I've been asked if this is because I am counting calories.

user14928465 · 31/01/2020 20:35

Cheese strings. I thought they were totally normal & everyone knew how to eat them... Until I got some for my DC & watched as DH carefully sliced little circles & arranged them on his bread.

At what point did you explain? Or does he still slice them?

meredithgrey1 · 31/01/2020 20:25

If I bake a cake I'll store it in the microwave - keeps it out of the way and stops any flies getting it. I wouldn't store anything in there that should be in the fridge though!
