Things you assumed were normal

DH bought some weetabix to have for breakfast a few days ago and I was amazed to see him preparing it by just pouring cold milk on and then eating it like that! I can't eat weetabix now but when I was little my mum would pour the milk on, then microwave it, then mash the biscuits in to create something similar to porridge. I assumed at the time that this was the only way to eat weetabix but my husband was appalled at the very idea and after a quick google it does seem like I'm very much in the minority. So it got me thinking, what are some things that you thought were normal, but then you realised that you/your family were the only one(s) doing it like that?

@Theonewiththecat sliced banana is all wrong, it's so weird texturally having little round slightly slimy bits of banana in the buttered bread. Mashed banana however is texturally lush.

Cold toast is one of the treats of a hotel breakfast. Brown toast, nicely cold, with butter and marmalade. Perfect.

Mushed banana sandwiches are the dogs bollocks. Me and dd love a good banana sandwich. MIL made me one once and instead of pushing the banana she sliced it. I nearly sliced her, what did she think she was playing at 😂

I have just put salt on hot buttered crumpets - so whoever suggested that please marry me. It was amazing.

importantwater we had one leg of a pair of tights as our stockings too. Long, knobbly, stretchy serpents of excitement, crackling on the end of the bed!

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 01/02/2020 20:14

Oh and mashed banana sandwich as an after school snack.

Ohffs66 · 01/02/2020 20:13

I think I was about 22 when I discovered that cauliflower and cabbage were 2 separate veg. We always had them mushed together like a paste with Sunday dinner so I always thought 'cauli and cabbage" was just one thing.

I walked in on my boyfriend in the bathroom wiping his bum after a number 2, and he was standing up to wipe his arse!

I've heard of people doing this - but I can't understand how! What you stand up your bum cheeks close so how do you even wipe properly?

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 01/02/2020 20:09

Buttered weetabix
Bread and butter dunked in tinned tomatoes
Bread and butter soldiers dunked in strawberry yoghurt

Butter played a large part in our childhood diet Grin

I only discovered last year that Cremola foam is a Scottish thing

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 01/02/2020 20:06

Don't know about Weetabix, but plain digestives definitely taste best with a thick coating of butter.

Try them with Nutella and forgive me for telling you about it. They are dangerously addictive.

thesunhasgothishatontoday · 01/02/2020 20:04

@Allergictoironing I remember an ex of mines mum doing his ready brek. Dry ready brek in bowl, generous pour of evaporated milk and some boiling water. Swirl of syrup. Bloody delicious!!

Natsku · 01/02/2020 20:04

@shinynewapple2020 that's what DD does, calls it melted cheese toast. I think it's weird though.

thesunhasgothishatontoday · 01/02/2020 20:01

@81 I love egg in a cup ❤️

InAPrettyCabinet · 01/02/2020 19:59

We used to have meat and potato pie with oxtail soup over the top. Dh thinks it disgusting!

Overtired123 · 01/02/2020 19:51

Peanut butter and iceberg lettuce sandwiches - delicious! But apparently not normal....

mynameisntlouise · 01/02/2020 19:51

Does anyone else say “full as a bread tin” when you’ve eaten too much? This is something my mum and dad have both always said, and I’ve said it to my husband a few times over the years and he doesn’t think it’s a thing normal people say.

IhaveaBigBum · 01/02/2020 19:24

I walked in on my boyfriend in the bathroom wiping his bum after a number 2, and he was standing up to wipe his arse!
He apparently thinks it's better to do it that way than sitting down to wipe.
MIND BLOWN Confused
It would never occur to me to do it standing up!

Scorpio75kaz · 01/02/2020 19:24

I can make my ears rumble too 😂

LisaD76 · 01/02/2020 19:24

Cheese and jam sandwiches.... has to be mature cheddar and either apple & raspberry or mixed fruit jam.... although I can’t find either in the supermarket anymore and have to make do with raspberry.... crackers with every jar of spread we had (aka peanut butter, choc spread, jam and lemon curd) and take it in turns.... how I’m not huge I don’t know

shinynewapple2020 · 01/02/2020 19:06

@ThumbWitchesAbroad if you want your 'lazy' cheese on toast to have a grilled taste - do toast in toaster, pop slice of cheese on top and microwave for 30 seconds

1forsorrow · 01/02/2020 19:02

TroysMammy glad it's not just me.

TroysMammy · 01/02/2020 18:57

I only have hot ribena. I think it's weird that people drink it like cold squash.

ChipInTheSugar · 01/02/2020 18:57

Never mind Weetabix, my Nan used to eat Shredded Wheat 'opened' into two pieces with butter on. Can't remember when I first saw someone eat them with milk!

kasmac · 01/02/2020 18:51

@TrippingOnSunshine Yes, you are right.....Don’t eat apple pips..... they have cyanide in them.....google it .....”
The seeds contain cyanogenic glycosides, making them mildly poisonous. If you consume enough of the seeds, you could ingest a fatal dose. But that's a lot of apples. Healthline did the math: You would need to finely chew and eat about 200 apple seeds, or about 20 apple cores, to receive a fatal dose” @FruityWidow @Clary

Whycantibeapuppy · 01/02/2020 18:51

Weetabix with butter and a sprinkling of sugar! My dad used to have it like that and I grew up loving it. Don’t think the doctors would be impressed!

Also my partner loves cold buttered toast. Let’s it cool down before buttering it. Weirdo 😂
