LIGHT HEARTED Interested in other posters thoughts on 'the ick'.

For those who don't know, the 'ick' is when someone you are dating just starts to irritate you for no apparent reason.
I dont mean normal annoyances, i mean they start to make your skin crawl and their mannerisms just go through you like a knife.
It can just creep up on you without any warning and they can even tick every box and otherwise be a 10/10 partner but unfortunately even them breathing irritates the life out of you. You try to fight it, but ultimately the irritation can turn to anger and make even the best of people become snappy with rage due to 'the ick'.

Ive experienced this once. Lovely bloke, not a bad bone in his body. After about 2 years for some reason still unknown to me i suddenly got 'the ick'. Watching him eat a pot noodle would make my blood boil.. Literally give me the rage. Everything he did irritated the life out of me.
As he was so lovely i tried my hardest to make things work. Until one day i confessed to a friend who told me about 'the ick' and how once it happens it can never be undone. They will irritate you forever. No one knows the cause of the ick.. But its incurableBlush. So i ended it. Felt nothing but relief.

So am i unreasonable to think 'the ick' is a real thing and once it happens the relationship is doomed?

Has anyone else experienced this? What is the reason behind 'the ick'? Why does it usually seem to happen with people who tick all the boxes?

I can't lie, i sometimes read posts on the relationship boards where the OP will say their partner has suddenly said they want out. Whilst everyone else is shouting 'OW' i think to myself maybe they've just got 'the ick?' Blush

Yeah, I've got that. Only trouble is we've been married 25 years.

Thankssomuch · 03/01/2020 20:43

Crikey.

IckyWickyWooWah · 03/01/2020 20:37

boom?!

Yep. It's got to the point where I barely tell him anything because if he answers with "Boom" it makes me want to scream.

Thankssomuch · 03/01/2020 20:27

ivkywickywoowah boom?!

IckyWickyWooWah · 03/01/2020 20:18

Yep. Husband of 20 years and the following annoyances crept up over the last couple of years. I genuinely never noticed (or was bothered by) these before.

He breathes too loudly.
He swallows too loudly - this big gulping noise.
He talks in a monotone dreary tone.
He narrates everything he's doing out loud to me.
He asks me the same questions over and over again.
He yawns and does this loud exaggerated noise with it.
He sniffs a lot.
He tuts and sighs a lot.

He says "Boom" in response to me telling him things such as arrangements for who's looking after the dog, what time the shopping is being delivered, etc.
He picks his nose.
He starts saying things, then pauses for about a minute, then says "no I've forgotten".
He constantly fidgets with his face so I can see this constant never-ending movement of his hands out of the corner of my eye.
He steals my jokes or my opinions and then relates them to other people as if they're his own.

There are millions more.

No 2 pulled my pubes silently and insistently as a signal that he wanted sex. I retaliated by pretending to be asleep as the tugging became firmer and more persistent, like a cat pawing to be let out

WTAF?????????? I hope you bloody slapped the wanker!!!

Have you suffered a head inury, Chnandler?

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 03/01/2020 19:52

No 1 was an Aussie. Older silver fox type. Then one day in bed he pushed out his front teeth 😱 as they were actually a bridge and talked in a whintynasal regional Australian accent at me with his front teeth missing.

No 2 pulled my pubes silently and insistently as a signal that he wanted sex. I retaliated by pretending to be asleep as the tugging became firmer and more persistent, like a cat pawing to be let out.

No 3 I made chocolate chip cookies (I grew up in the States). "Ooh," he said, "cakes!" Fuck the fuck off.

3luckystars · 03/01/2020 19:45

I didn't know it had a name. This happened to me about 20 years ago.

I looked at his hand and his fingers were like Postman Pats'!
They were stubby cartoon things and this cold feeling spread through me. I made a fast exit and never looked back.

MsChnandlerBong · 03/01/2020 19:39

Oh sod off Patroclus, nobody is rising to your bait so do one!

MsChnandlerBong · 03/01/2020 19:38

Scuttled his way across the bed

Oh my god 😂😂

Patroclus · 03/01/2020 19:35

oh yeah it was sarah silverman wasnt it, Paper. New Frasier should be arriving soon.

Patroclus · 03/01/2020 19:23

I know a lot of men who find the cutesy baby talk thing some women do completely repellant actually.

PaperbackBlighter · 03/01/2020 19:01

Has anyone ever seen that episode of Frasier where he meets a woman and it turns out he had previously dated her sister? The sister ended it when Frasier called her “m’lady” and she basically spent the next few years laughing to her mother and sister about it.

She had the ick.

Lambingseason · 03/01/2020 18:53

This thread is also making me think of Cell Block Tango, but without the murder of course Grin

Sagradafamiliar · 03/01/2020 18:53

Scuttled his way across the bed
🤣

Dailydup · 03/01/2020 18:48

Yep, the “ick” definitely exists. I’ve had this once before with a guy I was dating. We’d been on a few dates, all good. Next date I was invited over to his place for dinner and to stay the night. He was serving up a salad and asked me if I liked “BEETS” (he was Canadian) and it made my skin crawl. Had already committed to staying the night and in the morning he scuttled his way across the bed to whisper in my ear “I wish you could feel how much my heart races when I’m near you”. YUK YUK YUK. The final straw. Never saw him again 🤢🤮

Lambingseason · 03/01/2020 18:31

One ex of mine kept giving me pet names that were always [something] girl. For example, I wore a red coat one day so I was Red Coat Girl for about a week. If I was having a bad day I was Grumpy Girl. If I said I was tired I was Sleepy Girl. can't remember any others but they made my blood boil. I am a woman, not a girl, and it was so impersonal, childish and annoying. Drove me mad. He was in his 30s and just an over grown child. Hated him from then on, the sight of him made me want to heave.

Another ex had to be right about absolutely everything, it was incredibly tedious. One day when it turned out I was right about something and the outcome was him missing a train, he threw a huge toddler-esque tantrum with a whiney voice saying "are you happy now? You were right, want a medal?". Left him at the station, blocked his number and never spoke to him again, couldn't look at him in the same light after the cringey public display.

Thankssomuch · 03/01/2020 18:27

Oh and the one who introduced me to a group of people by saying “then I met this lovely lady” (sounds sweet, was really ick) 😞

Thestrangestthing · 03/01/2020 18:22

Happens to me once a month with dp. Makes my skin crawl. I get over it within a week.

Thankssomuch · 03/01/2020 18:17

Oh God no, jkscot4 My examples were from a range of men!! And God only knows how I pick them 😂

Other examples:

The guy who re-enacted a whole comedy sketch he’d seen on TV in front of me in a pub, doing all the voices himself (and they were ‘baby’ voices)

Seeing a poster on a guy’s bedroom wall saying “if you tinkle when you sprinkle, be sweet and wipe the seat”

Slippers, obviously

1foot2feet · 03/01/2020 18:17

@Patroclus that's exactly what it was for me. It's when they started depending on me for everything, including money with a particular ex, that the "ick" set in.

1foot2feet · 03/01/2020 18:14

No... Once the ick sets in, that's it! At least for me anyway.
