We've all be ill on and off since they went back to school.
One morning Dd was telling me that she had a 'bummed up nose' I asked her to repeat it and she said the same.
I tried to clarify what she was saying and told her it was actually 'bunged up nose'. She laughed and thought I was joking!
She's decided she's going to carry on saying it the way she does Grin
Please tell me it's not just us. Confused

I thought Lil Nas was taking his horse to the hotel room. That's what I sing every time.

www.speakpipe.com/voice-recorder/msg/ivu9k6hcfasytekx

I made a recording!!

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 05/10/2019 16:25

Wahh apparently my browser doesn’t support that voice recording thing.

I’ve used voice memos on my iPhone to record pork and stork. There’s got to be a way to upload it!

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 05/10/2019 16:12

In pork, it sounds like the ‘ou’ in pour

In stork, it’s like the ‘o’ in sorry

But WHY?!!!!

keffie12 · 05/10/2019 16:04

I have no idea why 2 of my 4 adult youngsters say wardrome's instead of wardrobes. Not a word you use regularly but on the odd occasion I have caught it I am very bemused by it

DaveCoachesgavemetheclap · 05/10/2019 15:49

My lovely mum (87) refers to Brexit as Bretex.
She also can't say ibuprofen and calls it iprofobin.

AnyMinuteNow · 05/10/2019 15:39

No sorry, thats not making sense.

In terms of pronounciation you'd need to use the specific phonetic sounds.

Saw-t
Baw-t
Taw-k
Paw-k

All the same pronounciation

Saying 'o' really doesn't say how thats said.

'o' as in o-ver
'o' as in opt
Or 'ou' as in ow-t

We

Motherinlawsdung · 05/10/2019 15:27

TinyGhostWriter that’s the best explanation so far, quite correct. Surely no one is going to come on here and say they pronounce the vowels in “pour” the same as the vowel in “sorry”!

Craiglang · 05/10/2019 15:07

My 7 year old DS says bungle bees. I'm never, ever going to correct it.

TinyGhostWriter · 05/10/2019 14:56

Although, I suppose it depends on how you pronounce those words 😂

TinyGhostWriter · 05/10/2019 14:56

@AnyMinuteNow

In pork, it sounds like the ‘ou’ in pour

In stork, it’s like the ‘o’ in sorry

LoveUsed · 05/10/2019 14:43

Not exactly the same thing but up until very recently I thought that the phrase ‘when life gives you lemons, make lemonade’ was a good thing. So instead of ‘oh what a shit situation, try to make the best out of it’ I thought it meant the opposite. Because lemons are good to have because they are a citrus fruit. What could be bad about having lemons?!

MumW · 05/10/2019 13:42

We don't have pins and needles we have fizzy feet.

Morado · 05/10/2019 13:42

As a teen I decided to be cool and say 'necesselary' instead of 'necessarily' and now I'm almost 30 and I've rewired by brain to always say that now 🤦‍♀️

AnyMinuteNow · 05/10/2019 13:01

Also pork (paw-k)
and stork (staw-k)
and walk (waw-k)
and talk/stalk (waw-k/staw-k)

I'm with @Bluntness DH, so punch me!

I am not following others explanations of pronunciation.

Marvlious, and spectacliar in our family. Also guilty of poor parenting, as our DC discovered when school taught them these words were in fact marvellous and spectacular, of course Blush

janj2301 · 05/10/2019 12:55

I also get annoyed with those who don't pronounce the 1st r in February and library

LittleFriendSusan · 05/10/2019 12:15

'I used to say floral ounces for fluid ounces!' So did I! Also not the foggiest where I got it from.

WendyMad · 05/10/2019 12:12

Director of a company I worked for used to say sustificate for certificate.

It irritates me when people say longtitude for longitude.

But who am I to criticise others? I used to say floral ounces for fluid ounces! I even occasionally wondered what flowers had to do with it, but mostly I never thought about it until one day DH laughed and corrected me. (I still rather like floral ounces though ....)

northernknickers · 05/10/2019 11:51

@Bluntness100 I've tried...honestly...and I cannot make pork and stork NOT rhyme. You are being U 😂😉.

16 year old still calls eyebrows eyebrowns

CCN2012 · 05/10/2019 10:08

my kids dont say ornaments, they are ordiments. And according to my son, I used to work in a hostipal. I love all the quirky language Grin and I refuse to correct them, even now we dont have possessed peas in our house as none of us like them

Nexa · 05/10/2019 09:49

Not phrases, but mispronunciation of words.

DH:
Simular (similar)
Communial (communal)
Dawarf (dwarf)

DH and his whole family:
Wolverine (warfarin)
Havana's (Havaianas)
Hugh-mus (hummus)

Despite my MANY corrections over the long years of our relationship he/they continue to use them.

There are a shit tonne more, those are just off the top of my head.

NP12 · 05/10/2019 09:34

Mine too 🤣🤣🤣

Alexapourmeadrink · 05/10/2019 08:43

My nephew was about 17 before he caught on that my surname wasn’t “Laurels”. My sister would say “we’re going over the The Laurels” today, meaning the area I lived in.
