To wonder how my dd got to 14 thinking this was the real phrase?

We've all be ill on and off since they went back to school.
One morning Dd was telling me that she had a 'bummed up nose' I asked her to repeat it and she said the same.
I tried to clarify what she was saying and told her it was actually 'bunged up nose'. She laughed and thought I was joking!
She's decided she's going to carry on saying it the way she does Grin
Please tell me it's not just us. Confused

had lost all his “self of steam”

I love that, like not being a fully functioning steam engine! I think I might start using it.

OnlyTheTitOfTheIceberg · 03/10/2019 18:12

But then he laughs at my accent because I think for and four sound the same. According to him they don’t??

Don't start another one!!

Hecateh · 03/10/2019 18:12

Giorgio Morodor had an album called Knights in White Satin - on which he sang Nights in White Satin.

Re Pork and Stork - I pronounce them the same but have a friend who says Pork as though it was poor k.

windandme · 03/10/2019 18:08

I've lived in London, SW, Wales and America and everyone l've ever known has said pork and stork the same. Grin🤣

Finallygotthere · 03/10/2019 18:08

12 yo for years said sqwans, he now knows and can say swan but funds it much more amusing to keep using sqwan.... the whole family have joined him!!

Rabbitsandtennis · 03/10/2019 18:08

Someone I went to school with once posted a fb status claiming he was feeling low and had lost all his “self of steam”

SaraNade · 03/10/2019 18:08

I can't remember who was, but around a month ago on here someone spelt receding (men's hairline) as reseeding. I had images in my head of little seeds of hair being planted in front of the man's hairline. I just couldn't respond. Lol Every time I thought of posting a reply I was too giggly to actually type anything. I still am whenever I think about it. lol

[if the person who wrote it is on this thread, sorry. I am not making fun of you honest. I find it so delightfully funny that's all]

stayathomer · 03/10/2019 18:08

I was about 14 when I found out 'to let didn't mean 'toilet!!

BringBiscuits · 03/10/2019 18:07

My DH puts leftovers into tubbaware.

But then he laughs at my accent because I think for and four sound the same. According to him they don’t??

pigsDOfly · 03/10/2019 18:06

I've had to read the whole thread, while whispering pork and stork to myself when really I should be doing something else, just to try to get to the bottom of the pork and stork conundrum, and I'm still none the wiser.

I'm from the South East and they definitely sound the same in my accent.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 03/10/2019 18:06

Stork, pork, Stork, pork, Stork, pork, Stork, pork, Stork, pork, ...

It's the same sound!

StarlingsInSummer · 03/10/2019 18:06

We say quite a few of these just to be silly:

Trickle treating
Given up the goat
Escape goat

Also
hods and sods (after my grandad’s pronunciation)
Rivers mirandering (instead of meandering, from my dad)
Choxs buns (instead of choux, since they often have chocolate on top).

I never understood why there was a song called Knights in White Satin until embarrassingly recently.

About a month or two ago?

Likethebattle · 03/10/2019 18:05

I thought umbrella was an ‘under ella’ as you stood under it! I also thought light sabres were ‘light savers’

Boysey45 · 03/10/2019 18:05

Friend said she couldn't see the usual Dr because they were on sabical. Whats that? I said. She said where they go to study someplace else for a bit then come back or something. She meant sabbatical.

TrophyCat · 03/10/2019 18:05

My dh calls cashew nuts casual nuts he honestly believes that I pronounce it wrong.

Dd once misheard the weather forecast on the radio and continues to talk about mister Fog whenever there is mist and fog.

windandme · 03/10/2019 18:04

While I'm in the 'sound the same' camp over pork and stork I give you...work.

Do you pronounce 'stork' sturk/sterk?

Mumsnet has lost its mind today. I'm reporting the thread and going for a lie down in a dark room. ShockSadAngryHmmGrin

Yaflamingalah · 03/10/2019 18:04

DH always says ‘cufflings’ for cuff links. I’m like “they aren’t the offspring of cuffs FFS!”

zen1 · 03/10/2019 18:03

I always thought the last line of Row, Row, Row Your Boat was “Life is butter cream”.

Also, until I was in my thirties I assumed that the ‘making spirits rise’ line in Jingle Bells was referring to spirits rising out of graves.

windandme · 03/10/2019 18:03

You don't sound pork and stork the same way! Pork has an o sound that isn't present in stork.

How the fuck do you say stork then? Stark? I'm so confused.

Pour rhymes with wore and War rhymes with Thor, Pour makes an "Oar" sound and War makes an Or sound

What the fuck??? Are you winding us up? They all sound the same. Is this just one big wind up?

Feeling very put out by this madness.

testing987654321 · 03/10/2019 18:03

Friend at university thought antibiotics were called antibionics I thought it was a deliberate joke the first few times.

user1471530109 · 03/10/2019 18:02

My dd still calls a cupboard a 'covered'. She's been corrected but can't quite get it right!

Seventytwoseventythree · 03/10/2019 18:02

Of course we all know now that the correct term for the dessert formerly called Eaton Mess is “Brexit” Smile

Rainonmyguitar · 03/10/2019 18:01

My DD(8) refuses to believe that it's a banister, not a balancestair, nope she's not having it.
