To wonder how my dd got to 14 thinking this was the real phrase?

We've all be ill on and off since they went back to school.
One morning Dd was telling me that she had a 'bummed up nose' I asked her to repeat it and she said the same.
I tried to clarify what she was saying and told her it was actually 'bunged up nose'. She laughed and thought I was joking!
She's decided she's going to carry on saying it the way she does Grin
Please tell me it's not just us. Confused

My ex used to say valentimes day and argued with me when I said it wasn't. He thought it made more sense.

But this is from the person who also says spag BOWL which infuriates me!

pinkelephantsanddietcoke · 03/10/2019 23:30

That meant to say 'space ghettos' in an American accent sounds like someone Scottish saying Spice Girls 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

pinkelephantsanddietcoke · 03/10/2019 23:28

My husband who is 40 loves 'mint chock chick' ice cream. I've given up correcting him Confused

Also, I read once that if you say 'Space Ghettos' in a Scottish accent it sound like Spice Girls..... and it does!

(I am Scottish)

Nestess · 03/10/2019 23:25

I was very embarrassed as a student when I was cheerfully singing (in my catering kitchen job) the Enya song: 'Save The Whales, Save The Whales, Save The Whales' - I realised everybody was laughing when they told me it was infact 'Sail Away, Sail Away, Sail Away'. A couple of decades on and I still prefer my version.

Knittedfairies · 03/10/2019 23:19

I could never remember which way was vertical and which was horizontal

I know someone who says 'horizontical' for that reason.

mundoespanol · 03/10/2019 23:17

I thought in Parliament when MPs vote it was ‘Eyes’ to the right ‘Nose’ to the left!!BlushGrin
Only when I went to see a play in London’s County Hall and saw the word ‘Ayes’ and ‘Noes’ did I realise my mistake. What an idiot I am!!!
(Brilliant play by the way - Witness for the Prosecution)

Justkeeprollingalong · 03/10/2019 23:16

I could never remember which way was vertical and which was horizontal until last week when my husband told me that horizontal follows the horizon 🤦🏻‍♀️
I'm 63 and 3/4 ☺️

CatteStreet · 03/10/2019 23:16

(oh, and I know you don't really say RP any more, but it's an easy descriptor)

CustardySergeant · 03/10/2019 23:15

Bluntness said (at Thu 03-Oct-19 17:33:48) that she is Scottish.

leonardthelemming · 03/10/2019 23:15

I say chimbley. I was born within the sound of Bow Bells, although having lived in Cheshire, Yorkshire, Southern Africa and the Channel Islands I have no idea what my accent is...

I do, however, quite like mangled eggs on toast.

And - this may be TMI at this time of night - I have had a mild attack of Dire Ear recently.

CatteStreet · 03/10/2019 23:15

I've managed (despite broadly RP accent) to make the pork/stork distinction with an 'ohr' and an 'awr' sound respectively, though I needed several goes. In my usual speech they'd rhyme exactly.

My dc are being raised bilingual in Germany and have come home with some utter pronunciation corkers from their school English classes, some of them rather unforgivable: 'ohven' for 'oven' was one, and 'swemps' for 'swamps' (no idea why swamps came up) another.

Binforky · 03/10/2019 23:14

For years I thought handbags were called ham bags.

AryaStarkWolf · 03/10/2019 23:10

@BrusselSprouts12345 I said I was from ROI

walkwalk · 03/10/2019 23:03

Not quite the same but on the news this morning whoever was typing the subtitles wrote "sex disco nation" instead of "sexual discrimination"

That made my morning

alibongo5 · 03/10/2019 23:01

To be fair both hot rod jumping frog albuquerque and Nights in White Satin make no more sense than the misheard versions! In fact I think Knights in White Satin makes more sense.

I always thought that the Stranglers were singing "lays me down with my manshiro". I had no idea what a manshiro was but thought it might be some sort of Mexican musical instrument.

And Louis Armstrong was definitely singing about "the bright blessed days, the dogs say goodnight". I still remember my sister eye rolling telling me it was the dark sacred night!

I only discovered that neither of these were true until quite recently!

NotSoFabReally · 03/10/2019 22:59

My 9 year old dd still refers to the microwave as the ‘motorwave’, and pavement as the ‘paperment’

Shitgovernmentshitparents · 03/10/2019 22:58

My daughter used to ask if I would carry her hand (hold her hand)
I still like the idea of someone carrying my hand!

My mother calls envelopes 'indablops'.

I am way older than I'd like to admit and I can't for the life of me pronounce 'ambulance' . I thought it was amublance when I was still younger and always mispronounce it still. Ambulance even looks wrong when written down. I even had to check in a dictionary that it was right!

Sneezeandooops · 03/10/2019 22:58

Pork and stork has become the new blue/black/gold dress thing.
Pork and stork sounds the same in cornwall

GreigLaidlawsbarofsoap · 03/10/2019 22:57

My husband says pork like it rhymes with stork, it drives me nuts and I want to punch him when he says it.

Maybe it's my Scottish accent, but they do sound the same to me too! How can you say pork any other way?

SuzieSunshine · 03/10/2019 22:57

I thought that the votes counted in the House of Commons were 'Eyes to the right. Nose to the left'. It makes much more sense now I know that it's 'Ayes to the right. Noes to the left'.

Anoisagusaris · 03/10/2019 22:57

As a child reading Malory Towers books, in my head I pronounced Alicia as A-lick-ia.

And Mme Dupont (the French teacher) as Mem Dupont - had no idea it was short for Madame in French.

BrusselSprouts12345 · 03/10/2019 22:54

@Bigoldwimp "Harold" be thy name???? This just made me laugh out loud 🤣🤣🤣

Bigoldwimp · 03/10/2019 22:53

“Our Father who art in heaven Harold be thy name“

My friend thought it was “Our father , rich aunt in heaven “ and was thoroughly disappointed to find out she didn’t have one

BrusselSprouts12345 · 03/10/2019 22:52

@UnderperformingSeal I think she said she was from Republic of Ireland. Or was that @AryaStarkWolf ? I can't remember now...

UnderperformingSeal · 03/10/2019 22:49

Pork has an o sound that isn't present in stork

@Bluntness100 you need to tell us where you're from, because just about everywhere else ... it doesn't.
