to share the things my BIL has moaned about whilst staying at our house for the past 3 days?

Amazon Prime Video doesn’t have the new Quentin Tarantino film that has just come out at the cinema. Ergo Amazon Prime is a waste of money.

The shower screen in the guest bathroom has a stationary rather than hinged shower screen.

That someone used the loo in the middle of the night and he could hear them flush - his bedroom door was 3/4 open.

We have stair gates, so our children don’t break their necks. “Really inconvenient”

The Thai restaurant sent us too many prawn crackers. They sent an appropriate amount for the number of people, actually.

My deodorant is blue. And what?

We don’t have an endless supply of spare clothes in his size and to his taste.

His hair was still in the shower in his en suite when he went back to use it the next day.

The towels I put out for him are white.

Our front gate is too squeaky.

The planes overhead are too low.

We have too many rugs.

He can hear traffic when in the garden.

Our dogs won’t cuddle him.

Our children wear shorts.

The settings of the seats in the car we lent him weren’t to his liking.

He doesn’t like the preset radio stations on our car radio.

My DH (his brother) “doesn’t wear a hat”??????

We don’t have his very specific music taste available to him on vinyl, although we did think to search out appropriate Spotify playlists for him but “that’s not quite the same authenticity”.

The local swimming pool (in a large city) keeps “provincial, British hours”.

Microwave steamers are “excessive gadgets”. Then 30 minutes later, “I suppose you could steam veg in your steamer, have you thought of that?” No shit!

None of the 3 duvets we offered him were suitable.

I use my inhaler too frequently.

Why do I have rosehip oil in the bathroom, it’s of no use to anyone.

Confused HmmAngry

"There's the story of the Englishman who went for a holiday in Spain and complained that there were 'too many Spanish people'."

just the one Englishman?! Grin

I've heard of English people in Spain complaining about all the "forrin food and where's me egg and chips?"

ddl1 · 17/09/2019 14:09

Boswellisdead: 'my fave was when he moved to Liverpool for a job for a couple of months and complained that the place was "full of **ing Scousers".'

Good god. You're not a hotel - and even a hotel wouldn't be able to accommodate all that. I do sometimes think that the advent of TripAdvisor and of AirBnB and its reviews has encouraged some people to treat other people's hospitality in their private homes as a subject for review and for all sorts of comments which would have never been considered acceptable in the past. In any case, he sounds like a bloody nightmare. I doubt that you'll be inviting him back any time soon; and same probably for anyone who's suffered him as a guest!

Boswellisdead · 17/09/2019 13:46

Shame you can't get tickets to Dismaland anymore, your BIL would have had a field day. (literally!)

I have an uncle who's a real fun extractor too, it's become something of an entertainment to see what he'll complain about next! my fave was when he moved to Liverpool for a job for a couple of months and complained that the place was "full of **ing Scousers".

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 17/09/2019 13:40

@BanKittenHeels
He has been moaning on our family group chat about the greasy scotch egg he had for lunch

Isn't that the whole point of a Scotch Egg? Greasiness?

MollyMinniesMum · 17/09/2019 13:37

Show him the door and boot him out

bananasaidso · 17/09/2019 13:33

I think OP as another PP has said, you should start tweeting what he says with the hashtag shitmyBILsays. I am sure you will go viral and famous. BTW your BIL sounds very much like Karl Pilkington. He can start his own show.

36TatianaLarina, when did you become such an expert on the mn population??

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 17/09/2019 12:23

I read this post with glee as it was very entertaining but on reading your last post @BanKittenHeels, I'm glad you are treating him with compassion.
His comments are hilarious and offensive but it does begin to sound like a dripfeed from someone who just says whatever comes into his head at the time and has no filter. If he does this allthe time he has probably alienated lots of people surrounding him and this makes life more miserable and less positive for him. He is probably treated with sarcasm at lot. Its good that you and your DH have discussed this with him and let him know how he comes across.

TatianaLarina · 17/09/2019 11:36

I know MN is very much of the challenge everyone who ever wrongs you or cut them out of you life but the reality of life outside of an Internet forum is very different.

Imo because there’s a high proportion of self identifying introverts, socially anxious, people pleasers, and confrontation-phobes, who find it easier to knee-jerk cut and block rather than deal with tricky social situations.

Great post btw.

LouH1981 · 17/09/2019 11:29

What kind of a shoddy establishment do you think you’re running here? Disgraceful service 😉
Thoughts and prayer and all that! x

Womble351 · 17/09/2019 10:56

Anyone seen Corrie and Abby was putting all Kevin Webster’s moaning online, you could start a website

Oliversmumsarmy · 17/09/2019 10:46

Nrtft but do I take it his wife doesn't speak English and he doesn't speak his wife's language.

If so how long do you think the marriage will last when she cottons on to English or he learns how to moan in hers

Chanellta · 17/09/2019 10:32

This has kept me thoroughly entertained this morning through my stinking cold.

64sNewName · 17/09/2019 10:28

Hope you’re having a good hard think about the inadequacy of your contribution, @LaMarschallin Wink

swimlyn · 17/09/2019 10:21

LaMarschallin: Ah, no! Really? Well, colour me crushed.

Grin Grin Grin Grin

Superb! Flowers

MITCHELL33 · 17/09/2019 10:12

Your dogs have got the measure of him sounds like a self centered nob.

LaMarschallin · 17/09/2019 09:49

UnderHisEyeBall

LaMarschallin I don't think you would have been told to go NC on the back of that tbh. I don't think your points about your ILs are even worthy of mention I'm afraid.)

Ah, no! Really?

Well, colour me crushed.

If you don't think they're worthy of mention, Under, they obviously can't be.

All I can suggest is, to those posters who have been so foolish as to read my unworthy post, is: apply the brain bleach.

UnderHisEyeBall · 17/09/2019 09:26

LaMarschallin · 17/09/2019 08:36

Unfortunately many nasty families/people do constant criticism in order to get people down/bully. This is clearly different.

True. But even then, when behaviour is upsetting, sometimes it's best to try to cope rather than immediately break contact (not always, and I'm not talking about extremes like abuse).

For example: when I first got married my MiL always (literally always) told my husband that he was looking thin or had lost weight. Every single time we saw her.
I'm a good cook; he's very sporty & fit and keeps a close eye on his weight.
He hadn't lost any poundage and the implication of my not feeding him properly was obviously there.
The feminist argument against that would just make this post too long.
She was continually criticising me according to her mores.

Before we got married, my in-laws-to-be offered us the choice of getting married at their house. This was because it was huge with acres of garden and we could have had a marquee like his sisters did at their weddings. For the wedding of one sister a field was offered for helicopter parking!

My widowed mother lived in a small flat so we had to have the reception in (shudder) a hotel. But she would have been devastated if I hadn't got married from her home.
In-laws just couldn't understand that.

I know about some types of bullying, believe me.

Had I posted here, at the time, about the above, I'd put folding money on some of the advice being "tell them to fuck off" or "go NC".

And my daughters would have lost out on absolutely brilliant grandparents who they adore and are adored by.

UnderHisEyeBall · 17/09/2019 08:01

LaMarschallin I agree. I will say however that OP did clarify early on that she had originally been upset by BiL's behaviour but upon finding out he didn't expect her to engage with the complaints and they were only passing comments, stopped being upset.

PhilSwagielka · 17/09/2019 07:57

I'm autistic and I may be a miserable git, but not THAT miserable.

LaMarschallin · 17/09/2019 07:50

Would this be while you were actually drinking wine? If not, you could make a fortune...

This thread just gives and gives.
My compliments Flowers

Zoidbergonthehalfshell · 17/09/2019 07:44

OMG - I want to be your best friend, OP.... I'm sure you would ring me up and tell me the latest litany of complaints and wine would come out my nose.

Would this be while you were actually drinking wine? If not, you could make a fortune...
