To Have Murderous Thoughts About Colleague?

I’m leaving my job and my replacement was hired, so I’m handing over.

Today he’s been reviewing my work over the last few months to get familiar with the accounts and when I asked how he was getting on, his reply was ‘it’s all quite good actually! I’m really surprised!’ Hmm

Later in the day, he commented that ‘you’re actually quite good at your job aren’t you?’

Then ‘well done, this looks like you planned it this way’

He also proceeded to explain my job to me in great detail. Over. And over. And over again. All the while, asking very very basic questions and eventually I said ‘yep, that’s very standard, have you not seen that before?’ To call him out on it and he replied ‘yeah I have, I just wanted to see if you knew why it’s done that way’

I DID FUCKING PLAN IT THAT WAY, IM VERY GOOD AT MY JOB AND YOU ARE REPLACING ME BECAUSE IM MOVING TO A MUCH, MUCH MORE SENIOR ROLE YOU INTOLLERABLE, MANSPLAINING SHART GOBLIN Angry

Somebody PLEASE lend me their willpower because I’m one ‘well done’ away from stapling a gold star to his fucking forehead.

I need to bite my tongue so I can leave and get to my new job but I’m really bloody struggling Sad

By page 12 I thought you may as well pick out your office Secret Santa today! Lol. So glad it turned out this well for you.

Mansplanation: nobody has said this, but it sounds as though your current manager is an absolute gem. Yes she made a mistake in hiring the SG, but some people are better at getting a job than at doing the job. As soon as that became apparent in SGs case, she took full accountability, apologised to you, and articulated the intent to protect your plans to move on even though I think you are going to a different company. She also took steps to address the problem quickly and decisively. Not everybody would do that - unfortunately, most managers would probably go into CYA mode instead.

So long as you can do this at a time and in a manner that will not jeopardise your own move, that could well merit giving her that praise, or better yet, telling her boss and/or perhaps the HR person just how professionally and ethically your boss handled this situation once the mistake became apparent.

At worst, you will reciprocate her good turn for you in protecting your move onwards and upwards. At best, you will help your boss's own career progression and that will come back to you as "good karma" at some point in the future.

I know I need to RTFT but I have got as far as

‘Oh! that’s where I’ve been going wrong! See, I’ve been going into client meetings, ranting in tongues for 20 minutes without taking a breath and then explained the whole thing again through the medium of interpretive dance’

And I can't. Stop. Laughing.

Haffiana · 10/08/2018 23:27

justicegasm.

Thank you for this seriously superb word. I have been quietly giggling about it all evening.

Lemonyknickers · 10/08/2018 22:46

Please read the full thread everyone but if you can't here's the synopsis: He has been let go already after not just winding up OP but her colleges, then shushing his manager (female), before refusing to accept she was in a position to tell him he was not suitable for the role, and HR had to deal with him (a male). He left saying he is getting his solicitor despite still being on probation.

HolyMountain · 10/08/2018 22:27

Dolly read the thread, he’s been offloaded already.

Dollymouse · 10/08/2018 22:03

We had a guy like this come and work at our place as a consultant - he was so patronising and wound all the women (and some of the men) right up. However - these things have a way of taking care of themselves - yes, you can want to murder him - but fuck him - he’s not your problem. Just rise above it, someone else on the team will almost certainly slap him down.

HolyMountain · 10/08/2018 21:42

Late to the thread posters

Read it in full, it’s worth it.

SuspiciouslyMinded · 10/08/2018 21:40

‘So YOU are going to replace me in this position after I get promoted? I’m really surprised!’

Honestly, do your clueless junior colleague a favour and explain to him that his comments are completely unacceptable. If he goes on like this with someone less patient and polite than you, he may end up in serious trouble.

MyNameIsJane · 10/08/2018 20:29

Wow! Now we need the solicitor’s version. 😂

tolerable · 10/08/2018 19:54

shag him... lmfao..(funny in my head)

Lalala2018 · 10/08/2018 19:40

I would say something like, "I lasted as long as I did in this job by not being so condescending, you should try it" if it gets his back up, so what? He obviously doesn't care about getting yours up and you are leaving anyway x

Lemond1fficult · 10/08/2018 19:20

Have just rtft. Am having a justicegasm.

Thank you @Mansplanation. You've made my year.

user1486250399 · 10/08/2018 19:17

I hate him. Please hurt him for me. Post pics.

Figlessfig · 10/08/2018 19:12

Or maybe yesterday Blush

Figlessfig · 10/08/2018 19:10

Congratulations, Mansplanation. You won the internet today 👏👏👏

Whoops - cartoon didn't post for some reason - sorry!

To Have Murderous Thoughts About Colleague?
outofsightoutofmind · 10/08/2018 19:00

Fucking hell - I must work with this wanker (shart goblin - har har!) too. As well as mansplaining EVERYTHING, he uses 'good girl' and 'well done' and (worst of all) 'see, you DO know what you're doing!' Utter dickwad.
He has also done the winky, clicky tongue thing but also did the special gun fingers with it like some 1970s throwback Angry.
Came across this cartoon which I thought might raise a laugh. Apologies if it has already been posted!

VelociraptorRex · 10/08/2018 18:54

I've just read the whole thread in one, and I've laughed from start to finish, you are awesome @Mansplanation Grin I LOVE shart goblin, and pig tit fingers, I've been crying! I've spent my career in a male dominated environment and I always got mansplained, my DP does it to me too, I'm going to show him this thread and try not to laugh at the expressions on his face
Good luck in your new role OP, you're ace Smile

LimeTwist · 10/08/2018 18:28

I have absolutely loved this.....I work with a shart goblin....it’s like he’s the new boy every single sodding day!!

FoodologistGirl · 10/08/2018 18:26

Maybe he was nervous and couldn’t stop talking. I’d let it go and move on no matter how much you want to throttle him!

biscuitmillionaire · 10/08/2018 18:25

That’s a ‘I’m going sick for rest of my notice period’ moment.

And that's a 'rtft' moment.

jade9390 · 10/08/2018 18:04

Keep focusing on the fact that you are moving on. You are also senior, tell him to stfu in a polite manner. I had a trainee far worse than that, who used to call colleagues instead of believing anything told him to do, so know how you feel. I had no chance of moving on in that job, so quit as it was depressing having to sit with him all day.

dstill1964 · 10/08/2018 17:58

That’s a ‘I’m going sick for rest of my notice period’ moment. If he’s so bloody marvellous he can fathom the rest of it out

dwab45 · 10/08/2018 17:33

Go girl! Let him have it!
