Just had an argument with a friend... is there an actual species called Wombles or were they made up creatures?

Thank you

Shockers. Gerald Durrell's problem was that he spent many childhood years in Corfu. Of course, Wombles don't live on Corfu - and, actually, you will never find a Womble on an island. Then GD ended up in Jersey, also an island, with his zoo. Although he invited some Wombles over to Jersey, they refused. They will only agree to live on VERY VERY VERY BIG islands!!!

I saw one in Bradford in 1974. It was in a Ford Capri, with its head sticking out of the sunroof.

This was one of the most exciting moments of my young life, having harboured thoughts of becoming a naturalist like Gerald Durrell.

I wonder whether Gerald Durrell ever saw a Womble in its natural, vinyl topped habitat...

BertieBotts · 13/05/2018 15:35

Maybe you're thinking of lemmings?

Bratsandtwats · 13/05/2018 15:13

Yes, they are real. I saw them all at a carnival as a child.

MiddleClassProblem · 13/05/2018 15:07

Nothing worse that when the cat brings in a a half dead womble. They’re far more vocal than a mouse.

BigStripeyBastard · 13/05/2018 15:04

They are real, yes. Here is one playing with my cat.

AuntieStella But Great Uncle Bulgaria said there were 200 wombles in the Wimbledon burrow. Madame Cholet would spend her whole life being pregnant, unless wombles have insanely large litters of 20 baby wombles at a time.

spiderlight · 13/05/2018 13:09

Of course they're real. I've got one. He's a rare Welsh grey-faced Womble, as opposed to the more common brown-faced ones.

They must be real or my username is a lie!

SquirmOfEels · 13/05/2018 12:23

Wombles really tail walk Wimbledon Parkrun

Andrewofgg · 13/05/2018 12:21

Then there’s matzohs. Arthur Miller’s mother gave Marilyn Monroe matzoh balls in her chicken soup and Marilyn was disappointed that there was no other part of the animal that you could eat.

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 13/05/2018 12:11

They ARE real. The real wombles are closely related to hedgehogs and gained their reputation for litter clearing from their ability, much like their cousins the hedgehogs, to roll into a ball and pick up bits of rubbish on their spikes whilst whizzing over the ground.

Ah yes, this thread would be why I woke up with the Wombles theme tune stuck in my head!

Glad to see it isn't just me hearing the common bit the same Blush

And I have just remembered I had a Wombles lightshade when I was a kid, different panels for each Womble. Loved it as much as any child could love a 70s plastic lightshade Grin

OneWouldHopeSo · 13/05/2018 11:47

Classics!

Crispbutty · 13/05/2018 11:27

of course wombles are real, and are related to those scots creatures, the Haggis..

(well I always used to think a haggis was a real creature that lived on the scottish moors..)

ScreamingValenta · 13/05/2018 11:24

But what we all need to know, and I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet, is how do wombles reproduce? The whole subject is shrouded in mystery. It bothers me that that might mean it's deeply sordid.
