Just had an argument with a friend... is there an actual species called Wombles or were they made up creatures?

Thank you

I left Uncle Bulgaria on a train and never saw him again. I blame my parents though as I was only 6 at the time. They purchased a soft toy replacement to try and console me. It wasn’t the same. I punish them by refusing to allow them to dispose of the soft toy. It lives on their spare bed, and has done for 30 years since I left home. I like to think it reminds them to always remember all of your luggage when departing the train.

I had that copy too, Noodles 😊.

Shockers · 13/05/2018 22:09

Mine was the photograph print.

Shockers · 13/05/2018 22:08

I had the bag with the printed womble (seen here in red- mine was blue). It cost 75p, and was displayed in a shop window in Thornton- Cleveleys. I coveted it for several weeks before I’d saved enough, but boy was I proud to carry it when it became mine!

I miss my lampshade!

TheNoodlesIncident · 13/05/2018 22:07

I have a copy of The Wombles by Elisabeth Beresford. They looked like little teddy bears. Clearly just not quirky enough as they stood. I liked the way their snouts looked like velvet.

I did not have a single item of decor featuring a Womble and feel cheated, to be honest.

I ran over one once. I did do CPR at the side of the road but to no avail. I’m still in therapy but it did make a nice rug, the fur is so soft

AvoidingDM · 13/05/2018 22:03

This is the one we owned

Tyneteas - we owned a very similar lampshade. Sadly it was replaced with a pink number with fringes!

PanPanPanPing · 13/05/2018 21:47

Rafals' I think you might have missed the bit when I said I was drinking rather a lot of Pernod back in those days?!?! It's a miracle I managed to see anything in Alderney, let alone a few Wombles!

MenopausalMaud · 13/05/2018 21:45

They are real but according to the song they are common so you probably wouldn't want to befriend them :)

OvergroundWomblingFree · 13/05/2018 21:45

Well I just read a group of Wombles is called a "shuffle" upon googling

AdaColeman · 13/05/2018 21:26

Surely a group of Wombles is called a Gathering or a Collection?

OvergroundWomblingFree · 13/05/2018 20:41

Personally I couldn't be friends with someone who disbelieved in Wombles. They put the rest of us at risk with their selfish refusal to acknowledge the facts and I wouldn't want them around my children.

Ikabod · 13/05/2018 20:33

@TyneTeas me too (the Wombles of Wimbledon, common are we). I

GreatUncleBulgariaWomble · 13/05/2018 20:29

Hello, young Wombles

Now, what's all this about Madame Cholet and me? I've never heard such nonsense in all my 300 years! Have you been listening to young Bungo again?

To more important matters ... has anyone tidied up a copy of The Times yet?

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 13/05/2018 20:26

A burrow of wombles, clearly

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 13/05/2018 20:25

They're not just in Wimbledon

Shockers · 13/05/2018 20:23

What about a wimbling of wombles?

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 13/05/2018 20:22

As a donkey, I was trying to be diplomatic, VQ.

Obviously Wombkes know better than to go to the wrong island Wink

Feckitall · 13/05/2018 20:20

think I have just dropped into alternative universe..Grin

Rachie1986 · 13/05/2018 20:16

Tyne I still did think that! I've never thought of it the other way!

I'm off to question everyone I know!

ErrolTheDragon · 13/05/2018 20:14

This is weird... why?

RafalsTheKingOfClay I don’t think they like the crapauds, donkeys are much kinder to them.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 13/05/2018 20:07

Meant to add it's a night light not a garden ornament.
