I’m building a time machine, to go back to the 80’s.

Just for the weekend.
They’ve just played ‘Together in electrics dreams’ on the radio and it’s left me aching for my youth.
So, for just this weekend only, I don’t want to be almost 45, I don’t want to keep hearing my kids squabbling with each other, I don’t want any responsibilities or to worry about the state of the world.
No, what I want is to go to the school disco tonight, I want to spend hours perfecting my gaudy sparkly make up, I want to wear my new ra-ra skirt or my batwinged jumpsuit, I want to hot brush my hair into an 80’s flick (with the help of a whole can of ozone-unfriendly hairspray!) and I want to smear my lips with that spearmint flavoured lip gloss from that little glass bottle with the roller ball and dance the (earl Your) evening away to Wham!, Whitney Houston, Duran Duran, Madonna and the like.
When I get up on Saturday morning (about 10am, I want to watch kids morning tv, for breakfast, I want my dad to cook his famous French toast (eggy bread really but French toast sounded posh), I want to go into town with my mates and buy the No.1 single from Our Price, I want to go to Top Shop and look at the posters in Athena and have a knickerbocker glory at The Wimpy. I want to spend the afternoon watching Knight Rider, Chips, The Fall Guy, Murder She Wrote, Hart to Hart and The Golden Girls.
On Sunday, I want to help dad wash the car in the morning (never did that in real life but my nostalgic brain tells me I did!), I want to eat my mum’s lovely Sunday roast and not worry how many calories, saturated fats, gluten or other nasties are in it. I want to see my much loved and missed grand parents and hug our lovely beloved family dog.
But most of all, I want to tape the Top 40, being careful not to get Bruno Brooke’s voice in at the end of each song ( that took great skill and judgement!)
So, does anyone fancy joining me for a trip back to the 80’s this weekend?
Refreshments on the journey will include, Panda cola, Clearly Canadian, Lilt and Quatro to drink and Spangles, Marathon bars (NOT snickers!), fruit salads and black jacks and 54321 bars ( E numbers included, yum!) to snack on.

Can I come and sit on the stairs watching all my big sisters friends getting ready to go out? And when you lot are all gone and I’m supposed to be in bed going to sleep, I’ll experiment with your Constance Carroll make up.

MissWilmottsGhost · 02/02/2018 15:12

I'm almost exactly the same age as you OP.

But I hated the 80s then and still hate it now. Too many bad memories for me I suppose, the music doesn't fill me with sweet nostalgia, more likely PTSD flashbacks Sad

I had to go to an 80s themed party a while back. Still had the stiletto boots, huge white silk shirt and leather bomber jacket, and the massive hoop earrings. Had to put on a wig though, no way I'm having another perm, there are still hilarious photos of me kicking around somewhere of the one my mum gave me when I was 13 Hmm

Much preferred the late 90s and naughties. Give me a bit of grunge anyday Smile

WingsOnMyBoots · 02/02/2018 15:12

I am actually listening to 70's mix on a loop right now; 'oooh now baby please don't go...' wonderful.

LuxuryWoman2017 · 02/02/2018 15:11

And what does Frankie say?
I'm sure you time travellers remember.

WingsOnMyBoots · 02/02/2018 15:09

I am increasingly starting to believe that ignorance is bliss. We know too much - if you don't know you can't worry about it. A lot of the big stuff you can't do anything about anyway so what's the point of knowing about it.

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 02/02/2018 15:09

60s first then the 70s for me aswell please.

WingsOnMyBoots · 02/02/2018 15:06

The seventies was my favourite era but I am more than happy to jump on board. Maybe you could drop me off on the way?

Gazelda · 02/02/2018 15:06

I can't decide whether to wear my pink cotton dungarees, or some pedal pushers. Whichever I decide on, I'm going to wear them to with my dad's V neck jumper on back to front and a set of plastic pearls cascading down my pale and spotty back.

I'll bang on the front window of the top deck of the bus when I get there. Get me a Pernod and black please.

ClementineWardrobe · 02/02/2018 15:03

I'm coming. I'll be in my neon ski pants and a real Fruit of the Loom jumper, its embroidered logo will show it wasn't a market knock off. I'll bring my George Michael poster, one day he's going to marry me y'know. (😢). I've outgrown Shakin' Stevens now. I'm practically a woman. This bra has two clips on it. So there.

pontiouspilates · 02/02/2018 15:01

I'm in. I'll wear my 'Heather Shimmer' lipstick and my jacket with enormous shoulder pads. Ooh and I'll dig out my beloved PuffBall skirt while I'm at it!

AmazingDisgrace · 02/02/2018 15:01

I'm learning all the lyrics from Smash' Ver Hits' Hits. I'm wearing black leggings, a massive silk shirt and DMs. If anyone comes too close to my ultra crimped and back combed hair with their fag I'll go up in a ball of flames.

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 02/02/2018 14:58

The guy she shares studio space with is older than us and said that he was there and the 80's were shit Shock

The guy was right btw. Grin

GallicosCats · 02/02/2018 14:57

Can you bring some Dewberry bath pearls to get ready?

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 02/02/2018 14:55

I'm in!

Hidingtonothing · 02/02/2018 14:54

Ohhh, white satin perfume in the little satin bag, I'd totally forgotten that but yes Little, classiest thing ever!

Chocolaterainbows · 02/02/2018 14:54

Miss those not misstepsConfused

EscapeTheCastle · 02/02/2018 14:54

I'm with you on this trip. Just planning popping to WHSmith for Smash Hits and a creme egg, then home for the A Team.

FilledSoda · 02/02/2018 14:54

Has anyone mentioned Rimmel's Heather Shimmer ?

Chocolaterainbows · 02/02/2018 14:53

Lazy Sunday afternoons reading Nancy Drew or Sweet Valley High. God I missteps days Smile

FrankiesKnuckle · 02/02/2018 14:53

Just rolling my hair with papillotens now, and dousing myself with dewberry.
I've just packed a neon top and my black puffball skirt into my Benetton duffel bag, I'll just wear my reversible jumper and stonewashed jeans round yours, I'll be getting the bus where I can have a fag up top.
Get the taboo cold! See ya later Wink

HeresLookingatEuclid · 02/02/2018 14:49

I will backcomb and crimp my hair, then spray it with insette.Spray some le'jardin perfume on after getting dressed in my fades, pixie boots and black and white checked jumper.twilight teaser lipstick then off to the disco and hopefully have a slowy at the end of the night.

BackforGood · 02/02/2018 14:48

Well I'm older, but will still come if I may?
Give me a mo to sort my giant shoulder pads out and I'll be there.

Of course, everyone will turn up where we pre-arranged, at the right time, as no-one will have a mobile to change the plans or check where you've got to.

BlackPeppercorn · 02/02/2018 14:47

I want to sit on the stairs next to the family's Trimphone and talk to my school friend for exactly 92 seconds before my dad yells out "How long you gonna be on that phone! I'm paying for that!" So I quickly hang up and don't talk to my school friend until Monday morning because there is no mobile, no what's app, no snapchst, no Facebook, nowt.
So I shall be forced to listen to my clumsy tape of last Sunday's top 40. Press pause, press pause.
Until Sunday evening when I can tape the new chart on my brand new TDK 90 that Auntie Mary got me for Xmas.

Cedar03 · 02/02/2018 14:45

White musk perfume! They still sell that in Body shop and I had a nostalgic sniff of it recently.

It was either that or Dewberry perfume.

yorkshireyummymummy · 02/02/2018 14:45

I want to come.
I’m starting to do my make up now and I will have to spend three hours tonging my hair and using at least a whole can of ‘lacquer’ on it. Plus I will put my Braun independent in my handbag with my anais anais so if anybody wants to use them in the ladies just ask me.
I will be wearing a batwing sleeved dress which has a Vee back and buttons up down the back. It’s fuscia and I will wear really high sparkly navy blue stilettos.
I’m going to pull for the last dance tonight!
