Because they are 'that good'? I realise different songs may affect people differently Smile

I have lots:

The last part of Do the right thing, Simply Red
The last part of Light my fire, Will Young
The whole of Sandstorm, Darude
The chorus of Love Love, Take That
The chorus of The Flood, Take That
The whole of Praying for time, George Michael
The whole of Sing Hallelujah, Dr Alban
The last chorus, to the end Confusion, ELO
The last bit, to fade, Rise, Gabrielle
All of Don't You, Simple Minds
All of Shine, Years and Years
All of Paradise by the dashboard light, Meatloaf
All of Home By The Sea, Genesis

Just off the top of my head Smile

Please Please Please by the Smiths. So short and so perfectly full of longing.

Take This Waltz by Leonard Cohen. Particularly:

“Oh my love, oh my love
Take this waltz, take this waltz
It's yours now, it's all that there is”

Run By Leona Lewis and Explosion by Ellie Goulding

homtardy · 15/01/2018 19:20

You have been loved by George Michael.

'For what's the use in pressing palms
When children fade in mothers arms'

'You brushed my eyes with angels wings,
Full of love
The kind that makes devils cry.'

That song has always made my heart hurt but since my son died I can't listen to it without sobbing.

Just realised I forgot my all-time favourite- The District Sleeps Alone Tonight by the Postal Service

You seem so out of context in this gaudy apartment complex
A stranger with your door key explaining that I’m just visiting
And I am finally seeing
Why I was the one worth leaving
Why I was the one worth leaving
I'll wear my badge
A vinyl sticker with big block letters adhering to my chest
That tells your new friends
I am a visitor here
I am not permanent

DustyMaiden · 15/01/2018 19:13

My friend sent this to me when my DD was stillborn.

see the tears you cry
They're tears I cannot dry
Know what you're going through
My heart goes out to you
There's nothing I can say
To take your pain away
I'm not sure what to do
My heart goes out to you
You know I feel so bad
To see you hurt so bad
But angels spread their wings
Over everything
There's one thing no one knows
Why things go the way they go
We'll never have a clue
My heart goes out to you
When you're overcome
When you need someone
I'll be the friend you need
Like you have been to me
I see the tears you cry
One day they'll all be dry
But until they do
My heart goes out to you
My heart goes out to you
My heart goes out to you

Merry Christmas Darling by the Carpenters
Time to say goodbye - Andrea Boccelli and Sarah Brightman

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 15/01/2018 19:00

Rites of Passage by Fish, particularly the line "living with you is like being parked on double yellow lines, waiting to be towed away, I'll pay the fine and I'll be back, but I'm running out of of reasons to stay". An ex broke up with me by playing this song to me, and even though nearly 20 years has passed I still cry when I hear it.

DumbledoresApprentice · 15/01/2018 18:56

“Lover, you should have come over” by Jeff Buckley and “First day of my life” by Bright Eyes. My favourite lyrics are

It’s never over
My kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder

and

This is the first day of my life
Swear I was born right in the doorway
I went out in the rain, suddenly everything changed
They're spreading blankets on the beach

MoonlightMedicine · 15/01/2018 18:55

Baby mine - Bette Midler’s version
Beautiful Boy - Lennon
God Only Knows - beach boys
Adia - sarah MacLachlan
I know it’s over - The Smiths
Unfinished Sympathy - Massive Attack

And many more. Great thread!

Ratbagcatbag · 15/01/2018 18:54

I love this thread

My life has changed so much in the past 12 months, some expected, a lot not.

For me praying - Kesha is awesome.

I'm proud of who I am
No more monsters, I can breathe again
And you said that I was done
Well, you were wrong and now the best is yet to come
'Cause I can make it on my own, oh
And I don't need you, I've found a strength I've never known.

We will be - Matt wills

When your hopes and dreams are floating down the river, just remember we have the power to believe, just stand up and deliver. We will be, we will be.

Yes to For A Friend Communards

Shipbuilding Elvis Costello .. words so apt

ElsaMars · 15/01/2018 18:48

The whole of She by Elvis Costello
Dance with my father by Luther Vandross which is odd because I don't see my Dad and have just an OK relationship with long term step dad.
In 'A whole new world' the Aladdin song, the line 'soaring, tumbling, freewheeling, through an enless diamond sky' always gets me.

Coffeeandcrochet · 15/01/2018 18:48

Also agree with some that others have posted - Iris by Goo Goo Dolls, Hurt by Johnny Cash.

Oh, and I can't sing "I vow to thee my country" - or listen to Jupiter from The Planets - without seriously choking up. "And soul by soul, and silently her shining bounds increase, and her ways are ways of gentleness and all her paths are peace".

2old2beamum · 15/01/2018 18:45

Beautiful Boy by John Lennon, played at my beautiful boys funeral. Showing my age! Reduces me to tears every time I hear it.

HazelBite · 15/01/2018 18:45

As you are ....Rag n Bone Man, (been married to DH for coming up to 40 years when I first heard this, simple words , simply put but brought a lump to my throat).

Coffeeandcrochet · 15/01/2018 18:44

U2 - With or without you
Frankie goes to Hollywood - the power of love
Moody Blues - Nights in white satin

And from Wichita Lineman "and I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time..."

There's something so yearning and poignant about all of them.

Arkengarthdale · 15/01/2018 18:40

Wasn't expecting that - Jamie Lawson. Brings a lump to the throat just thinking about it.

Walking in the air - Aled Jones. Reminds me of a particular time in my life. I'd just started with depression but before I knew what it was. The song came on the radio and I couldn't stop crying. Cried for about three hours. Just had a quick listen again now and got that shivers down the spine

AntsDeck · 15/01/2018 18:39

Daniel, Elton John
For A Friend, Communards

Loving You by Minnie Riperton I have always liked this song and it was so beautifully sung it would bring a lump to my throat.

Whilst driving it came on the radio and they announced she had just died , I cried so much I had to stop and bawl my eyes out.

AntsDeck · 15/01/2018 18:36

Beverley Craven, Promise me
Genesis, Please Don't Ask Me

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 15/01/2018 18:29

Phil Collins Separate Lives

You have no right to ask me how I feel
You have no right to speak to me so kind
I can't go on holding on to time
Now that we're living separate lives.

EnidButton · 15/01/2018 18:24

*the lyrics are written about (wtf autocorrect?)

MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly · 15/01/2018 18:24

"Grow" by Frances. I cry in the car when it come on, every time.

EnidButton · 15/01/2018 18:23

Questions of science
Science and progress
Do not speak as loud as my heart

Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard
Oh, take me back to the start

The Scientist by Coldplay was playing when we were coming home from the last bit of our last round of Ivf. It didn't work. These lyrics really summed it up for me. I know that's not what the ingredients is written about but it spoke to me at the time.
