Because they are 'that good'? I realise different songs may affect people differently Smile

I have lots:

The last part of Do the right thing, Simply Red
The last part of Light my fire, Will Young
The whole of Sandstorm, Darude
The chorus of Love Love, Take That
The chorus of The Flood, Take That
The whole of Praying for time, George Michael
The whole of Sing Hallelujah, Dr Alban
The last chorus, to the end Confusion, ELO
The last bit, to fade, Rise, Gabrielle
All of Don't You, Simple Minds
All of Shine, Years and Years
All of Paradise by the dashboard light, Meatloaf
All of Home By The Sea, Genesis

Just off the top of my head Smile

Atmosphere by Joy Division

The Last Time I Saw Richard by Joni Mitchell

Every song on Portishead's Dummy

Say by Cat Power:

I hope all is well with you
I wish the best for you
When no one is around love will always love you

thelastjedi · 15/01/2018 20:53

On the theme of Dire Straits, Romeo and Juliet is a great one.

Always by Bon Jovi Blush

Someone mentioned Fast Car above. The lines that get me are:

You see, my old man's got a problem,
Lives with the bottle, that's the way it is.
His body's too old for working, his body's too young to look like his.
My momma went off and left him, she wanted more from life than he could give.
I said somebody's got to take care of him, so I quit school that's what I did SadSad

So much George Michael on this thread 💙

This Woman’s Work, Kate Bush.

PrivateParkin · 15/01/2018 20:47

"You can't start a fire sitting 'round crying over a broken heart
This gun's for hire
Even if we're just dancing in the dark
You can't start a fire worrying about your little world falling apart
This gun's for hire
Even if we're just dancing in the dark" - love it! Gives me the shivers whenever I hear it. I think it just means you can go through life accepting things or you can try and grab it with both hands, reinvent yourself, even if you'd got no idea what you're doing or if it will work out. Ah, The Boss!!

joystir59 · 15/01/2018 20:45

The whole of 'who'se lovin' you' Michael Jackson

Autumnchill · 15/01/2018 20:44

Sipped a rum and Coke, told a dirty joke (OCS) always reminds me of a road trip in Devon in a convertible and it was playing as I drove round a bend and saw the sea which was sparkling and the sun was shining and I just remember being so unbelievably happy with life. I hear it now and don't know if I'll ever be that happy and carefree again

TillyTheTiger · 15/01/2018 20:42

A few Elbow songs do this to me, because they're nostalgic and beautiful, but the one that gets me most is about betrayal, 'I've Got Your Number':
'Throwing advice like grenades at the table,
You're spinning your wisdom in stories that change.
Your lies are fluorescent, my baby-faced angel.
Grow a fucking heart, love.
I know what you have done.'

Also Beth Nielsen Chapman 'Sand and Water' makes me well up every time, it's about losing her husband:
'All alone, I heal this heart of sorrow.
All alone, I raise this child.
Flesh and bone, he's just bursting toward tomorrow
And his laughter fills my world, and wears your smile.'

thelastjedi · 15/01/2018 20:41

The end of Layla by Derek and the Doninos - the instrumental bit they play at the end of Goodfellas.

The instrumental ending of Tunnel of Love by Dire Straits

This is going to sound terribly self absorbed, self pitying and trite but it made sense at the time.

When I was getting divorced and living in the family home by myself, every time I came into an empty house and turned the telly on, Friends always seemed to be starting.

I changed the words and sang "I'll be there for me cause no one else will..."

Like I said, self pity city but I often still sing it without thinking!

AntsDeck · 15/01/2018 20:40

Most songs by Celine Dion get me too, especially Because You Loved Me, All coming back to me now, The Reason and Oh Holy Night.

Now have something in my eyes too

In your head, in your head, they are fighting
With their tanks, and their bombs
And their bombs, and their guns
In your head, in your head they are crying

Cat Stevens - How Can I Tell You

liquidrevolution · 15/01/2018 20:36

'Out of sorrow entire worlds have been built
Out of longing great wonders have been willed'

God that Nick Cave is a poet.
(Are You The One That I've Been Waiting For?)

AntsDeck · 15/01/2018 20:35

Portia, yes, me too and also The Living Years, Mike and the Mechanics also chokes me.

Some already said Run, Leona Lewis, the lines which get me are:
Light up, light up, as if you have a choice, even if you cannot hear my voice, I'll be right beside you dear. Choked even writing that Sad loved it until I lost my dad and cannot listen to it even now

I can't make you love me - George Michael

RedRosie · 15/01/2018 20:33

Sorry for everyone's losses. Flowers

A mixtape (remember those oldies?) of this lot would have us all prostrate with melancholy.

Mine is Warren Zevon 'Keep me in your heart'

"If I leave you it doesn't mean I love you any less,
Keep me in your heart for awhile"

I can't even listen to it!

alifemoreorlessordinary · 15/01/2018 20:31

"i'll keep a part of you with me, and everywhere I go, there you'll be"
Leanne Ryhmes?
Sorry, got something in my eye...

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 15/01/2018 20:30

Barenaked ladies-what a good boy

I go to school, I write exams,
if I pass, if I fail, if I drop out,
does anyone give a damn?
And if they do, they'll soon forget 'cause it won't take much for me
to show my life ain't over yet.
I wake up scared, I wake up strange.
I wake up wondering if anything in my life is ever going to change.
I wake up scared, I wake up strange
and everything around me stays the

Barenaked ladies.. War on drugs.
Majority of the song but especially..

Hard to admit I fought the war on drugs
My hands were tied and the phone was bugged
Another died and the world just shrugged it off

And coldplay..definitely Fix you and The Scientist.. But do love Us against the World

And if we could float away
Fly up to the surface and just start again
..... Through chaos as it swirls
It's us against the world

PortiaCastis · 15/01/2018 20:24

Dance with my Father. Luther Vandross

Reminds me of my lovely Dad who died when I was 20 and I still miss him.

PricillaQueenOfTheDesert · 15/01/2018 20:23

Heal your Pain, by George Michael. It helped me through the pain of an awful divorce. Here are a few lines, but the whole song resonates in my heart.

Who needs a lover
That can't be a friend
Something tells me I'm the one you've been looking for
Oh, if you ever should see him again
Won't you tell him you've found someone who gives you more
Someone who will protect you
Love and respect you
All those things
That he never could bring to you
Like I do
Or rather I would
Won't you show me your heart
Like you should

Gingernaut · 15/01/2018 20:21

A Million Years Ago - Adele

A song about looking back, the choices made and regrets about changing and moving away.

A song you'd expect an older person to sing, but an extraordinary song for someone as young as her.

Also, I'm sorry to mention this one but Let It Go, from Frozen gets me every time because it takes me back to the time when I was fortunate enough to come into a little windfall, that meant I could finally take my DC to Disney in Florida, even though they were actually grown ups by then. I had promised them I would take them if I ever could, throughout their childhoods. I left their EA father, years ago but he continued to make their younger years miserable and unhappy and when the time came that I was finally able to keep my promise and they played that song before the firework show, whilst projecting it onto the castle at night. As I thought about how far we had come, I broke Sad still gets to me every time now

Great thread!

Drops of Jupiter by Train every time -

But tell me did the wind sweep you off your feet
Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
And head back toward the Milky Way?
And tell me did you sail across the sun
Did you make it to the milky way to see the lights all faded
And that heaven is overrated?
