Because they are 'that good'? I realise different songs may affect people differently Smile

I have lots:

The last part of Do the right thing, Simply Red
The last part of Light my fire, Will Young
The whole of Sandstorm, Darude
The chorus of Love Love, Take That
The chorus of The Flood, Take That
The whole of Praying for time, George Michael
The whole of Sing Hallelujah, Dr Alban
The last chorus, to the end Confusion, ELO
The last bit, to fade, Rise, Gabrielle
All of Don't You, Simple Minds
All of Shine, Years and Years
All of Paradise by the dashboard light, Meatloaf
All of Home By The Sea, Genesis

Just off the top of my head Smile

I can't listen to The Islander by Nightwish without crying, every damn time!

The chorus of Higher Than Hope, also by Nightwish.
Red sun rising
Drown without inhaling
Within the dark holds hard
Red sun rising
Curtain falling
Higher than hope my cure lies.
First heard this song when I was 16 and suicidal. Sad I still struggle with depression but haven't felt that bad in years.

The Last Song I'm Wasting On You by Evanescence. Fucking hell, just listen to it, the raw emotion in Amy's voice gets me right in my heart. But she LTB years ago and is happily married now, so it does have a happy ending.

Missing by Evanescence, how I feel about my marriage. I first heard it when I was 17 and had never had a boyfriend, and it made me cry then, now I can barely listen to it.

Please, please forgive me, But I won't be home again.
Maybe someday you'll have woke up, And, barely conscious, you'll say to no one: "Isn't something missing?"
You won't cry for my absence, I know, You forgot me long ago.
Am I that unimportant? Am I so insignificant?
Isn't something missing? Isn't someone missing me?

Even though I'm the sacrifice, You won't try for me, not now.
Though I'd die to know you love me, I'm all alone.
Isn't someone missing me?

Please, please forgive me, But I won't be home again.
I know what you do to yourself, I breathe deep and cry out:
"Isn't something missing? Isn't someone missing me?"
Even though I'm the sacrifice, You won't try for me, not now.
Though I'd die to know you love me, I'm all alone.
Isn't someone missing me?

And if I bleed, I'll bleed, Knowing you don't care.
And if I sleep just to dream of you, And wake without you there,
Isn't something missing? Isn't something...

Even though I'm the sacrifice, You won't try for me, not now.
Though I'd die to know you love me, I'm all alone.
Isn't someone missing me?

Khaleesi0 · 17/01/2018 02:23

Oh and also Gwen Stefani - Cool

Khaleesi0 · 17/01/2018 02:20

I have a few...

Johnny Cash's version of Hurt
Foo Fighters - Best Of You
Flogging Molly - If I Ever Leave This World Alive
Gerry & The Pacemakers - You'll Never Walk Alone (played at my fiancé's funeral)
Oasis - Champagne Supernova (above fiancé's favourite song)

Hidingtonothing · 17/01/2018 01:15

Anyone mentioned Ludovico Einaudi yet? Pretty much anything of his makes my chest tighten up, so much emotion, but 'Solo' in particular.

IndieTara · 17/01/2018 00:57

Nick Drake - Northern Sky. Cant even listen to it now without crying

CranjisMcBasketball · 17/01/2018 00:55

I'm 39 but was raised on a lot of Irish music. I love The Fureys. Their music is beautiful and haunting. I love When You Were Sweet Sixteen. We played it at my uncle's funeral.
My all time fave is their version of The Green Fields of France. It's about a 19 year old soldier killed in WW1.

Well how do you do, young Willy Mcbride,
Do you mind if I sit here down by your graveside,
And rest for a while 'neath the warm summer sun,
I've been walking all day and I'm nearly done.

I see by your gravestone you were only 19,
When you joined the great fallen in 1916.
Well I hope you died quick, and I hope you died clean.
Or Willy Mcbride, was it slow and obscene?
Did they beat the drums slowly,
Did they play the fife lowly?
Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down?
Did the band play "The Last Post" and chorus?
Did the pipes play the "Flowers of the Forest"?

Did you leave a wife or a sweetheart behind,
In some faithful heart, is your memory in shrine?
And though you died back in 1916,
In that faithful heart, you're forever 19.

Or are you a stranger without even a name,
Enclosed forever behind a glass pane.
In an old photograph, torn and battered and stained,
And faded to yellow in a brown leather frame?

Now Willy Mcbride, I can't help wondering why
Do those who lie here know why they died.
Did they really believe when they answered the cause,
Did they really believe that this war would end wars?

But the sorrow, the sufferin', the glory, the pain
The killing and dying were all done in vain.
But, Willy Mcbride, it all happened again, and again, and again, and again, and again

Did the pipes play the "Flowers of the Forest?"

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 17/01/2018 00:45

Sorry. That was badly cut and pasted. I didn't spot the typo' s.

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 17/01/2018 00:43

We played the opening theme to In The Night Garden at my 2 year old nephews funeral.
^Post my meaning
The night is black,
And the stars are bright,
And the sea is dark and deep

And someone I know is safe
And snug, and the're drifting
Off to sleep

Round and round, a little boat no bigger
Than you're hand, out on the ocean, far away from land.

Take the little sail down,
Light the little light.
This is the way to the night garden^

Beautiful words for beautiful boy.

OwlDoll · 17/01/2018 00:19

Christy Moore's song The Voyage
"Life is an ocean, love is a boat
In troubled waters it keeps us afloat
When we started the voyage, there was just me and you, and now gathered round us we have our own crew."
I've always loved this song. It used to make me think of my parents and siblings, now its reflects me and dh's time together.

OwlDoll · 17/01/2018 00:10

John Denver's Annie's Song - "Let me drown in your laughter, let me die in your arms."
I never really listened to the words properly until recently when it came on the radio when I was driving and I got a flashback to my mother dying in hospital with my father's arms around her.

DontDIY · 16/01/2018 23:57

Beautiful song Cathy, and I’m so sorry for your loss Flowers

cathycake · 16/01/2018 23:53

I lost my eldest son 2 years ago and find it very hard to listen to music. He had incredible songs at his funeral which I don't want to post here but I will tell you about an experience 3 months after he passed. It was the first time I left my home since he had passed on my own, without company and moral support.

Anyway as I got in the car and drove for a few miles the radio was switched off and I said out loud
"Ok I know your with me - I can't do this -- please just give me a sign"

I turned the radio on and a song started called "wherever you will go" by the Calling
I remember having to pull over and sobbing in a side street as the lyrics that hit me were

'And maybe, I'll find out
A way to make it back someday
To watch you, to guide you through the darkest of your days
If a great wave shall fall and fall upon us all
Then I hope there's someone out there who can bring me back to you
-------------

It's strange but at my darkest times I will often hear this play in the background somewhere and I feel he is telling me "it's ok mum, I'll see you again"

Nervousrex · 16/01/2018 23:30

@HolyShmoly - yes! I love In A Week too. It took me a few times of listening to it to really understand what the lyrics were saying, but when I did it was a real "ice cubes down the back" moment.

Also "Rainbow Eyes" by Rainbow. Time stops when I hear it.

HolyShmoly · 16/01/2018 22:47

ActualAl I think you've broken me with those lyrics. I'd never heard that song but I started bawling after reading the first verse.

HolyShmoly · 16/01/2018 22:44

I'm going to come back and read the actual thread but LOADS.
Specific suggestions:
this exact version of Grace: Honestly, if the name Grace worked with our surname and this baby is a girl this would probably be her name. For other reasons, but also because I probably stick this on youtube at least once a week.
The Blowers Daughter by Damien Rice (actually a number of songs from that album, I remember being absolutely blown away as a teenager.)
I agree with a previous poster who mentioned Hozier, I love Take Me to Church but also In A Week.

My list has a very Irish lean to it I see! I'm sure there are tons more that I can't think of, but I love that heart-achey, neck shivery feeling that you get.

SofaKing0101 · 16/01/2018 22:36

Nobody can save me - Chester Bennington Linkin Park

and everything else he sang

DontDIY · 16/01/2018 22:31

The usual Coldplay ones.

The Scientist - from when I was 20 and chose my forever cheating ex over the one person who ever made me feel like maybe there was someone else I could love. And by the time I realised my mistake, it was too late he moved on, he changed, and despite trying again over many years, he just fucked me over and I feel it’s my karma.

Green Eyes - because that one person told me it made him think of me.

Loads more, but I was wallowing on the above tonight anyway Grin

MrsGrindah · 16/01/2018 22:25

I’m in bits here,!

feska5 · 16/01/2018 22:15

Curtis Stigers - Don’t go far ❣️

feska5 · 16/01/2018 22:10

The Beatles - In my life
Simply Red - For your babies
Bat King Cole - Smile

ActualAl · 16/01/2018 22:09

Loads of these songs have brought memories back, some good some not so much and so many have been mentioned that I would have suggested. Here's a Proclaimers one I love. It makes me think of my FIL who died shortly after our wedding and didn't meet my children;

"Now And Then"

Lately, I've been forgetting
To keep your memory Every day

It's so long
Since last time I saw you
And sometimes the present
Gets in the way

But now and then
You just walk right in
Ask me how it's been
Since you've been still
And if I cry
You just smile and sigh
I never said goodbye
I never will

Lately things have been so good
I with that you could
Be here to see
The beauty of all your grandchildren
By your children
Your legacy

But now and then
You just walk right in
Ask me how it's been
Since you've been still
And if I cry
You just smile and sigh
I never said goodbye
I never will

Lately, I've been forgetting
To keep your memory Every day

PourMeAGlass · 16/01/2018 21:53

After reading this thread, I've just YouTubed Ed Sheerans 'Supermarket Flowers' and sobbed and sobbed and sobbed, such a beautifully sad song.

I lost my lovely Mum 2 years ago and I don't think, now I've heard the song, I'll ever forget the line 'You were an angel in the shape of my Mum' 😢

BertieBotts · 16/01/2018 21:46

Lots! Lots. Music is extremely important to me. I can link a lot of songs to various times in my life. I'll try and pick some out which have the "heart hurt" feeling - I know exactly what you mean!

Gravel by Ani Difranco - oh I just have a thing for unhealthy relationships, that pull.

My Father's Eyes by Eric Clapton, the unplugged version - anything that mentions his son but Tears in Heaven is a bit overplayed and he just sounds so tired in this one.

Feathers and Down by the Cardigans

Coming Around Again by Carly Simon - oh!! Oh this.

And the description of everyday activities which just gets worse and worse until "You scream a lullaby" - such a brilliantly painful description of a failing relationship in the newborn days.

Tell Her This by Del Amitri

I Know You By Heart by Eva Cassidy: ^You left in Autumn. The leaves were turning." How the world freezes when you lose someone.

Good Enough by Evanescence

Hole in the Heart by Karine Polwart (but I think this is so powerful) - It's about breaking free of other's expectations, whatever form those may take.

HelpTheTigers · 16/01/2018 21:38

Maybe a bit of a strange choice, but the one that always brings me to tears is Goodbye Dolly Gray, written well over 100 years ago and popularised during the First World War. Maybe I'm just weird Blush

AntsDeck · 16/01/2018 21:12

I now have lots more songs on my IPod, some of which I have never heard of before, so thank you all Smile
