Because they are 'that good'? I realise different songs may affect people differently Smile

I have lots:

The last part of Do the right thing, Simply Red
The last part of Light my fire, Will Young
The whole of Sandstorm, Darude
The chorus of Love Love, Take That
The chorus of The Flood, Take That
The whole of Praying for time, George Michael
The whole of Sing Hallelujah, Dr Alban
The last chorus, to the end Confusion, ELO
The last bit, to fade, Rise, Gabrielle
All of Don't You, Simple Minds
All of Shine, Years and Years
All of Paradise by the dashboard light, Meatloaf
All of Home By The Sea, Genesis

Just off the top of my head Smile

"Shake it out" by Florence at the machine. I think its a beautiful song but the lyrics remind me of a painful time of my life and makes me feel unbearable sadnes (though apparently its only about having a hangover!)

GallicosCats · 17/01/2018 23:44

Tears in Heaven is unbearable. Also agree with Take This Waltz. There's a song from Schubert's Winterreise called Das(?) Lindenbaum which always gets me; the words are about revisiting a place of refuge and realising it can no longer offer that shelter. Sad But if you really want to cry into your Guinness nothing can beat Danny Boy.

REM Everbody Hurts. In my early twenties I gave a lift to a student (who lived in the same village) to college everyday as I worked in the same town.
This was on the radio one morning and he said he thought the words were perfect and he would want them at his funeral. He subsequently joined the army and was killed overseas and I cannot hear this song without thinking of him.

springtulip · 17/01/2018 23:36

"And when i see the sign that points one way, the lot we used to pass by every day" from Just Walk Away Renee, by The Four Tops. Such a hauntingly beautiful melody with those lyrics.....gets me every time.

Say Something. I've had to walk away from two people I loved desperately, but they no longer loved me, just weren't willing to be seen to be the bad guy. Both broke my heart (and still do)

Say something, I'm giving up on you
I'll be the one, if you want me to
Anywhere I would have followed you
Say something, I'm giving up on you

And I am feeling so small
It was over my head
I know nothing at all

And I will stumble and fall
I'm still learning to love
Just starting to crawl

Say something, I'm giving up on you
I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you
Anywhere I would have followed you
Say something, I'm giving up on you

And I will swallow my pride
You're the one that I love
And I'm saying goodbye

Say something, I'm giving up on you
And I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you
And anywhere I would have followed you (Oh-oh-oh-oh)
Say something, I'm giving up on you

Say something, I'm giving up on you
Say something...

greedycushionhoarder · 17/01/2018 22:45

Oh and how could I forget this one?
Fuckin perfect by Pink
Made a wrong turn, once or twice
Dug my way out, blood and fire
Bad decisions, that's alright
Welcome to my silly life
Mistreated, misplaced, misunderstood
Miss 'No way, it's all good', it didn't slow me down
Mistaken, always second guessing, underestimated
Look, I'm still around
Pretty, pretty please, don't you ever, ever feel
Like you are less than, less than fuckin' perfect
Pretty, pretty please, if you ever, ever feel like you're nothing
You're fuckin' perfect to me
You're so mean when you talk about yourself, you were wrong
Change the voices in your head make them like you instead
So complicated, look happy, you'll make it
Filled with so much hatred, such a tired game
It's enough, I've done all I can think of
Chased down all my demons, I've seen you do the same
Pretty, pretty please, don't you ever, ever feel
Like you are less than, less than fuckin' perfect
Pretty, pretty please, if you ever, ever feel like you're nothing
You're fuckin' perfect to me
The whole world's scared so I swallow the fear
The only thing I should be drinking is an ice cold beer
So cool in line, and we try try try
But we try too hard and it's a waste of my time
Done looking for the critics, cause they're everywhere
They don{t like my jeans; they don't get my hair
Exchange ourselves, and we do it all the time
Why do we do that? Why do I do that
Why do I do that?
Yeah, oh, oh baby, pretty baby
Pretty, pretty please, don't you ever, ever feel
Like you're less than fuckin' perfect
Pretty, pretty please, if you ever, ever feel
Like you're nothing, you're fuckin' perfect to me, yeah
You're perfect, you're perfect
Oh pretty, pretty please, if you ever, ever feel
Like you're nothin' you're fuckin' perfect to me
Brings back all the feelings of hurt and injustice of my mum throwing me out of the house and dispensing me at 16 because she believed a stranger over her own daughter, we made up but it still hurts 30 years later.

greedycushionhoarder · 17/01/2018 22:29

Jack of all trades Springsteen

I'll mow your lawn, clean the leaves out your drain
I'll mend your roof to keep out the rain
I'll take the work that God provides
I'm a Jack of all trades, honey, we'll be alright
I'll hammer the nails, and I'll set the stone
I'll harvest your crops when they're ripe and grown
I'll pull that engine apart and patch her up 'til she's running right
I'm a Jack of all trades, we'll be alright
A hurricane blows, brings a hard rain
When the blue sky breaks, feels like the world's gonna change
We'll start caring for each other like Jesus said that we might
I'm a Jack of all trades, we'll be alright
The banker man grows fatter, the working man grows thin
It's all happened before and it'll happen again
It'll happen again, they'll bet your life
I'm a Jack of all trades and, darling, we'll be alright
Now sometimes tomorrow comes soaked in treasure and blood
Here we stood the drought, now we'll stand the flood
There's a new world coming, I can see the light
I'm a Jack of all trades, we'll be alright
So you use what you've got, and you learn to make do
You take the old, you make it new
If I had me a gun, I'd find the bastards and shoot 'em on sight
I'm a Jack of all trades, we'll be alright
I'm a Jack of all trades, we'll be alright

Elledouble · 17/01/2018 22:25

Oh god, the Tee and Mo goodnight song! I was trying to explain to my parents why it makes me cry so much, so I played it to them and they both welled up!

barefoofdoctor · 17/01/2018 21:54

Suedehead and Every Day Is Like Sunday (Morissey), the True Romance theme tune (Hans Zimmer), Hurt (Johnny Cash) Brighteyes off Watership Down and heaps more which I can't think of.

iamzzz · 17/01/2018 21:52

SharronBotts that is heartbreaking. Thanks

HermanMerman · 17/01/2018 21:35

And now my kids are teens, this bit from Wherever you Roam by the Proclaimers makes me well up

And I'm not going to be there
And you won't always take care
But my love goes with you
Wherever you roam
No matter where you are in the world
You're still my boys
And you're still my girls
And my love goes with you
Wherever you roam

HermanMerman · 17/01/2018 21:33

@Actualal - I love that song, it makes me cry because it’s so true for me (lost my mum when my kids were small)

This Proclaimers song, After You’re Gone also sets me off

The love you leave
Will be there after you're gone
Will be there after you're gone
Still be there after you're gone

The air you breathe
Will be there after you're gone
Will be there after you're gone
Still be there after you're gone

The lochs and seas
Will be there after you're gone
Will be there after you're gone
Still be there after you're gone

Three score years and ten of joy and pain
Adds up to mayflies on the windowpane
The windowpane

The mystery
Will be there after you're gone
Will be there after you're gone
Still be there after you're gone

The lochs and seas
Will be there after you're gone
Will be there after you're gone
Still be there after you're gone
Gone

LifeLaundry · 17/01/2018 12:25

My main one is When She Loved Me by Sarah McLachlan, just the thought of it makes me cry; also Annies Song by John Denver, Ode to Billie Joe by Bobby Gentry and Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell. Another one that always makes me stop, and listen is Sylvias Mother by Dr Hook. Its so sad.

Raahh · 17/01/2018 11:26

There are lots of songs that make me cry- but not necessarily because they are sad in themselves, but because they remind me of a certain time/person.

'Drops of Jupiter' by Train is one. It remind me of a friendship that was very intense, and when we fell out, it really affected me. I can't listen to it all without bursting into tears.

'The Scientist' by Coldplay -almost all of that album really- again, connected to the same friend, and the period after Ds was born.

And most of the songs on Pink's album 'Mizzunderstood'-

Perhaps most weirdly- 'Christmas rapping ' by the waitresses makes me cry. reminds me of Christmas's when I was a teenager, when things were simpler.

I think I'm far more affected by memories of the time when songs came out, than the lyrical content.
I mean, who cries when they hear 'King of wishful thinking'?? Grin

"I'd rather live in his world than live without him in mine"
from Midnight Train to Georgia, Gladys Knight.

CranjisMcBasketball · 17/01/2018 09:05

The line about the "mute white crosses" gets me. I also love "She moved through the fair". Feargal Sharkeys version is beautiful. Also Scarlet Ribbons. Was used at my nanas funeral a week before it was featured during Nanas death on the Royle Family. I still can't watch The Queen of Sheba without thinking of my lovely nana.

OwlDoll · 17/01/2018 08:44

CranjisMcBasketball I was going to mention The Green Fields of France as well, especially the line
" Although you died back in 1916, in that faithful heart are you forever 19."
It makes me cry everytime I hear it.

berryferry · 17/01/2018 07:15

The "go to sleep" song by teen and mo that they show on c beebies 😭

lazydog · 17/01/2018 04:20

Loads of songs that have already been mentioned, but the weirdest one that makes me well up, even though I only have sons Confused , is "Dear Daughter" by Halestorm.
