Anyone want to come and mourn the reality vs expectation of new purchases with me?

I bought this beautiful jacket online. In my mind I'd look like Blondie in the 80s, very rock and roll and all round awesome. In reality I look like a giant angry teddy bear/yeti. I have broad shoulders and a bust although slim in general, and it doesn't do me any favours. I wanted it for ages and it's now sold out, and so the joy of getting it in my size just in time is sadly wasted. It is a beautiful jacket - just not on me! Anybody else want to come and mourn reality vs fantasy with me?

Glad this made it to classics! Truly deserved! Hilarious thread (and SO relatable!!) Grin

Haha, that was me Breakfast. But maybe if we'd seen what we looked like, we wouldn't have worn some of the 80s "fashion".

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 21/12/2017 09:36

I agree with the poster who is thanking god for the absence of social media and cameraphones in the 70s and 80s.
It limits the evidence for...
Perm = Noddy Holder
Grown out perm with blow dry = Princess Diana at her flickiest
Dressed as Madonna from Desperately Seeking Susan = Baglady

I tried toning down the Madonna DSS look with just the jaunty headscarf knotted over my hair = Hilda Ogden

Mine too, quirky! Those filmmakers really ruined red for people under 4 foot.

quirkychick · 21/12/2017 07:29

ProjectGainsbourg we bought dd1 a red snowsuit with a pointy hood when she was little, every time she wore it dp kept saying "Don't Look Now" accompanied by Psycho music.

Steaksauce · 20/12/2017 23:04

Oh the short at the back, longer at the front haircut I had in the 90s.
I was going for edgy grunge chic

Reality: Adam Rickitt.

Goshthatwentwell · 20/12/2017 21:02

I had turquoise green polka dot leggings in the 80's. Because they went with fluorescent pink......

Anyway.

I also have a midnight blue dress ( sequinned top bit). No idea why. Last worn 1995 for a posh staff party.

ProjectGainsborough · 20/12/2017 20:56

Oh god, the Don’t Look Now reference! We bought DD a classic red duffle thinking it would be cute. Every now and then she takes me unawares and I wonder if I’m being chased by a malevolent dwarf through Venice.

SingaSong12 · 20/12/2017 19:53

This whole thread has me laughing out loud. I'm not sure how to nominate for classics (and I know others have) but I add my voice.

dublinia · 20/12/2017 19:52

A fe*king perm.
I had to bin all the photos of me in Venice because of that perm Smile

Awks · 20/12/2017 19:01

Cotton harem trousers. I thought I'd look like a global traveler, fresh from doing Cambodia.

DD1 saw me in them and said "oooh mummy, you look lovely. Just like a big, fat, clown".

Wilburissomepig · 20/12/2017 18:43

Remember when Aran was in?

Brown corduroy trousers, a pair of flat monks, a big Aran jumper and a huge red perm.

I looked like I had lost my céilí band.

I accompanied by brown cords and huge Arran with a cord cap, legwarmers and tukka boots. And, my piece de resistance, a bright yellow sou'wester. I think I saw Nick Heyward from Haircut 100 wear one once.

Reality - utter fucking knobhead.

tccat · 20/12/2017 18:28

Cream velvet bodysuit, expectation, sexy seductress
Reality, Big Daddy the wrestler

DollyPartonsBeard · 20/12/2017 17:32

How could I forget my lemon Bermuda shorts?! Paired with a grey and lemon striped vest worn over a coordinating tshirt. In my head I looked like the forth member of Bananarama, but I probably just looked like an actual giant banana.

Oh god quirky chick. I also had some white with black polka dot leggings - but i also had a matching crop top. I wore them together (cringe).

CountFosco · 20/12/2017 13:55

I had cullotte shorts in the early 90s and very practical they were too (a forerunner to skorts really). I keep thinking I should like cullottes more than I actually do. Cropped wide legged trousers are essentially a slightly longer version aren't they?

Gingernaut · 20/12/2017 12:40

Me too.

I have one school photo of me in all my big haired 'glory'.

All I have to do is keep it quiet.

If that fashion disaster happened now, 30 years from now, there would still be digital images of me on memory cards, in clouds, on social media pages....all retweeted and shared by friends and family.

Nightmare. 😱

quirkychick · 20/12/2017 07:28

I'm so glad that we didn't have social media in the 80s! I could look like an idiot experiment with fashion without their being incriminating evidence.

Janetjanetjanet · 20/12/2017 01:49

Sorry Toss but that comment about your companion called Marjorie is brilliant Grin

Janetjanetjanet · 20/12/2017 01:47

Reality - gazza

^
Please just stop now

Janetjanetjanet · 20/12/2017 01:46

I looked like I was wearing a woolly hat for 2 years. Grew it out into a German helmet Purdey cut that wasn't much better.....

Creasing at this one Grin
