I've always loved The Amazing Mr Blunden but am amazed so few people have heard of it.
Anyone else have old yet glorious and obscure movies they love?

Just a heads up for fellow old b/w movie fans here - tonight on Talking Pictures [Freeview 81] at 22:00 - Quarter. A portmanteau piece with four SomersetMagham stories. Bonus Dirk Bogarde too!

It's years since I've seen it, but from memory a very young George Cole has a rather quirky way of pronoucing 'kite'.

Mr Blanding Builds his Dream House. The Money Pit is based on it.

Now Voyager. My favourite film ever.

'Don't let's ask for the moon. We have the stars.'

I first saw this on tv when I was in my teens, probably. Was years before I realised we were supposed to understand that they DTD the night they were stranded.

thenettyprofessor · 15/10/2017 21:22

Dancergirl I haven't but will look it up now

Vulgarlady · 15/10/2017 21:21

Here we go round the Mulberry bush -swinging 60s in all its glory. There were a few films like this but I've forgotten the names of the others

Anymajordude · 15/10/2017 21:20

Now Voyager. My favourite film ever.

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 15/10/2017 21:17

Peters Friends is one of my favourite films of all time. Cracking soundtrack too.

MissWimpyDimple · 15/10/2017 21:16

Romanov and Juliet

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 15/10/2017 21:12

Dancergirl - the Everyman was where I saw M. Hulot's Holiday and Mon Oncle 9693939393 times as a child!

AndromedaPerseus · 15/10/2017 21:02

Torn Curtain - little known Hitchcock film starring Paul Newman and Julie Andrews
Roman Holiday - best Audrey Hepburn film
To Sir with love
A taste of honey

AlecTrevelyan006 · 15/10/2017 20:33

Breaker Morant - based on a true story, set in te Boer War and starring Edward Woodward

Sacco and Vanzetti - also based on a true story about two Italian-born anarchists sentenced to death in 1920’s America

Gallipoli (obscure enough?) - Mel Gibson’s best film imho

AlecTrevelyan006 · 15/10/2017 20:27

Another vote for La Cabina, a quiet extraordinary brilliant and scary short film.

Dancergirl · 15/10/2017 20:10

Just thought of a few more:

Letter to Brezhnev - brilliant, film, so funny and NEVER EVER shown on TV - why??

Peter's Friends - this was out in the 90s around the same time as Four Weddings (which I wasn't impressed with). Much much better than 4 weddings and under-hyped

Another one I remember from my childhood - does anyone remember With Six you get Eggroll? I think Doris Day was in it. About a step family with lots of children.

Dancergirl · 15/10/2017 20:05

Whatever Happened to Baby Jane

Yes! Another one I watched as a child and it scared me silly!

Have you seen the French and Saunders take up?

Inmyownlittlecorner · 15/10/2017 20:05

Mr Horacio Knibbles. It's about a giant rabbit that only the little girl in the film can see. My sister & I used to watch it I the morning over Christmas. It was always on about 5.30am.
Swiss Family Robinson (Sir John Mills)
Blythe Spirit
Waterloo Bridge
Captain January
Lost Angel (Margret O'Brien)
Candleshoe (Jodie Foster & David Niven)
A matter of Life & Death.

Dancergirl · 15/10/2017 20:01

Oh Monsieur Hulot! grin Thanks for reminding me. The tennis match in M Hulot's Holiday

I saw this years ago as a child with my mum at the Everyman in Hampstead. It was a double bill with another French film - Mon Oncle - also very funny.

HarrietVane99 · 15/10/2017 19:47

Yes to This Happy Breed. Celia Johnson playing the mother without her usual cut-glass accent. And a lovely performance by Robert Newton as the father.

AbsentmindedWoman · 15/10/2017 19:41

Last Year at Marienbad.

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 15/10/2017 19:40

I, too, love The Amazing Mr Blunden.

Also Dean Spanley. A beautiful film.

VodkaLimeSoda27 · 15/10/2017 19:19

This Happy Breed. About a family in south London between the wars. Gentle, funny, heartwarming. Remember watching it with my lovely Nan as a kid ❤

Vulgarlady · 15/10/2017 19:10

Midwich cuckoos
Old Roman Polanski films - Rosemary's baby, the Tenant (super scary), repulsion I know Polanski was a total creep tho

Summer of 42...no one I've ever met has seen this. About teenage lads in cape cod trying to get laid. Which sounds like Porkys or something else crude but it's actually sad

NashvilleQueen · 15/10/2017 18:46

I came on to say Murder by Death and was pleased to see it appear on the second page. I loved this film and watched it over and over. It even has Truman Capote along with a stonking cast and it's a parody of all detective movies (so there's a Poirot figure, a Sam Spade, Miss Marple etc). Great Alec Guinness blind butler as well.

AliDran · 15/10/2017 18:38

Will Hay films, Keep it under your hat with Jack Hulbert and Cicely Courtneidge, Arthur Askey films. They all remind me of my dad, and I'll always remember watching them with him when I was a young child, so I love them for that
