I've always loved The Amazing Mr Blunden but am amazed so few people have heard of it.
Anyone else have old yet glorious and obscure movies they love?

To me, many of these films aren't obscure - must be my age, they were always on tv when I was growing up.

Incidentally when I was about 14 I got an amazing book from the library, "The Ghosts" by Antonia Barber. Two years later it was made into a film "The Amazing Mr Blunden".

DifficultLemon Is that the film with Kate Rusby?

wowfudge · 13/10/2017 22:55

I love The Anazing Mr Blunden. It's a family favourite. Picnic at Hanging Rock gets my vote.

elQuintoConyo · 13/10/2017 22:54

MissKelly "Dahling, i'm just popping into Hythe" - loved it when we lived in Hythe Grin one of my favourite films.

I wouldn't say Abigail's Party was obscure, i'm early-40s.

Harvey with James Stewart is just lovely, sad but lovely. Bell Book and Candle is another James Stewart film withKim Novak and Jack Lemon, they are all witches. She has a cat named Piewacket [spelling] Jack Lemon plays the bongos!

Trapeze. Anything with Burt Lancaster of that era really.

ilovesooty · 13/10/2017 22:52

The Lost Weekend
Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte
The Dark Mirror

SignoraCarmignola · 13/10/2017 22:52

Bob I agree about it being a bit racy, much more than you'd expect for the 30s.

I've only seen 'Went the Day Well' once. I'd like to see it again.
I always enjoy Genevieve if I catch it on tv.

I recently watched 'In Which We Serve' again. Noel Coward all stiff upper lip and noble as a WW2 naval commander. Great stuff.

I'm also rather fond of 'The Adventures of Robin Hood' with Errol Flynn and Basil Rathbone. I love Basil Rathbone in anything actually - even those dodgy Sherlock Holmes films.

LittleHearts · 13/10/2017 22:49

Abigail's Party

misskelly · 13/10/2017 22:48

One of my most favourite films and I'm not sure if it's obscure but it is old, Blithe Spirit, love it.

GrockleBocs · 13/10/2017 22:48

I think we have The London Nobody Knows on DVD. I tracked it down for DH.

I'm a Powell & Pressburger fan too.Love AMOLAD and IKWIG. I do like Edge of the World.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/10/2017 22:48

I get a bit of eyerolling from the rest of the family about Went the Day Well? I could watch it umpteen times over. Also Green for Danger.

There's one whose name I forget about a young woman working in a munitions factory during the war whose husband is in the RAF. I think that might be one of those portmanteau films where we follow several people, in this case all young women adjusting to their new lives in the factory.

DifficultLemonDifficult · 13/10/2017 22:46

Heartlands - lovely, lovely film with the perfect Michael Sheen

TheScottishPlay · 13/10/2017 22:45

Spring and Port Wine.
Love it more every time I see it.

What a marvellous thread. I've seen most of these. Old black and white films are often so good, even when they were made really quickly and cheaply. (I suspect the ones that were rubbish haven't survived.)

The original St Trinian's film, with Alistair Sim playing brother and sister, Joyce Grenfell and George Cole. I adore it. None of the sequels are up to much, but that one is fantastic.

Alec Guinness playing umpteen members of the same family in Kind Hearts and Coronets.

affectionincoldclimate · 13/10/2017 22:39

@allegretto London Nobody Knows rocks big time! I love that film and nobody bloody knows about it.

forcryinoutloud · 13/10/2017 22:39

Pretty much anything with Edward G. Robinson

affectionincoldclimate · 13/10/2017 22:38

Heavenly Creatures. Saw it randomly as it was on and I watched it with no expectation whatsoever and it blew my mind at the time.

ChinkChink · 13/10/2017 22:37

Dirk Bogarde's my favourite actor but I thought one of my favourite films, Death in Venice, wouldn't count as 'obscure'. I love it.

Just thought of another oldie but goodie - Pink String and Sealing Wax. Googie Withers at her best.
