I've always loved The Amazing Mr Blunden but am amazed so few people have heard of it.
Anyone else have old yet glorious and obscure movies they love?

OP posts:
LifeIsLikeTetris · 14/10/2017 11:18

Has anyone mentioned The Red Balloon?

LifeIsLikeTetris · 14/10/2017 11:17

Omg I loved The Amazing Mr Blunden!

When it was on one Christmas a few years ago I raved about it to dc and they duly lined up to be Amazed. But then the little blighters all slunk off saying it was boring Shock Hmm Philistines.

Also good to see This Happy Breed on here. I'm going to enjoy reading through this. Will have a think of some more. Good thread, thanks op! Smile

Camelot - the lovely Richard Harris. We went to see it on honeymoon in Cornwall many years ago, and I remember weeping at the end.... "Don't let it be forgot, That once there was a spot, For one brief shining moment, That was known as....Camelot."

Ohwhatfuckery I'm with you on how we define old. There used to be a dating site ad with someone singing

'I like old movies.....like The Godfather....Three'.

I thought Old Movies??? The Godfather??? That's not old! To me an old movie is black and white like Casablanca or Key Largo.

Just shows your age.

whiteroseredrose · 14/10/2017 11:01

Kind Hearts and Coronets with Alec Guinness.

My regular comfort film is How to Steal a Million with Audrey Hepburn and Peter O'Toole .

Thanks howdoyouall

Last Summer. It is very, very hard to track down and doesn’t ever seem to last too long on YouTube but it is absolutely brilliant! It is about four teenagers at a seemingly blissful and hot Cape Cod, three of whom turn on the fourth with unbelievable cruelty. It was made in the sixties and stars a very young Barbara Hershey and Richard Thomas. So gripping and sinister!!!

This thread is making me want to close the curtains and hunker down with my extensive collection of Powell and Pressburger DVDs.
And The Ghost and Mrs Muir is a great film.

chemenger · 14/10/2017 10:43

The Ghost and Mrs Muir is one of my favourites too, Middleofthetoad, nobody else seems to have heard of it.

Howyoualldoworkme · 14/10/2017 10:38

LouiseBrooks That's Spring and Port Wine Smile

LemonRedwood · 14/10/2017 10:34

I have just googled and didn't even realise that the novel wasn't even originally called The Amazing Mr Blunden. So much for my dedicated love of it!

LemonRedwood · 14/10/2017 10:32

There's a film of The Amazing Mr Blunden??? Why have I never known this? I love that book!

LouiseBrooks · 14/10/2017 10:30

"Veronica Lake", Verona is a city!

LouiseBrooks · 14/10/2017 10:29

What's that movie where James Mason (be still my beating heart) is the dad who, annoyed his daughter won't eat herring (I think) for her tea, refuses to throw it out and serves it up to her every day for a week?

MrsOverTheRoad · 14/10/2017 10:28

Over The Edge...1979. Matt Dillon's first ever movie!

LouiseBrooks · 14/10/2017 10:26

This one probably really is obscure.

Verona Lake and Frederic Match in I Married A Witch (said to have given the inspiration for Bewitched).

She was so beautiful.

Howyoualldoworkme · 14/10/2017 10:19

Conspiracy of Hearts
Woman in a Dressing Gown
The Ghost and Mrs Muir
Spring and Port Wine
The Family Way
Endless Night..

I've got totally addicted to the Talking Pictures tv channel. Brilliant stuff including a rerun of Family at War Smile

ConstantlyCooking · 14/10/2017 10:14

And Stalag 17 is my favourite pow film.

ConstantlyCooking · 14/10/2017 10:12

I love The Dead of Night and The Amazing Mr Blunden. I had recorded them but obviously can't play videos now. I also have a soft spot for Clue.

maddiemookins16mum · 14/10/2017 09:48

Mrs Caldicotts Cabbage War (with Pauline Collins and John Alderton) is another film I love. It's a proper Sunday afternoon ironing film.

CamberGirl · 14/10/2017 09:47

Squadron 633.
Absolutely love it.

Zaphodsotherhead · 14/10/2017 09:43

I actually came on here to say 'The Amazing Mr Blunden'! Such a great Christmassy film - I love it too, OP!

rhubarblover · 14/10/2017 09:38

Saythatagain I think the film about disfigured couple is called The Enchanted Cottage.
Chinkchink another vote for Random Harvest - a real tearjerker and just wonderful.
