I’ve just learned that Casablanca is not in South America at all and is, in fact in Morocco! Who knew 🙄🤦🏼‍♀️
Anyone else got any tidbits they learned far too late in life?

Just heard someone being interviewed on radio, and he pronounced awry "aww-ree".

doodlejump1980 · 13/10/2017 08:32

@JeNeSuisPasVotreMiel I have eaten capers (usually in a sauce over other fish) many a time and they've always tasted fishy. I'm quite clever really... Honest! 😃

diddl · 13/10/2017 08:27

Segue is a great word.

It always looks to me as if it's a seg for posh shoesGrin

JeNeSuisPasVotreMiel · 13/10/2017 08:14

Anyone who has seen a caper would realise that they are not fish....wouldn't they?
Or have people who say that they thought they were fish never actually seen a caper?

My contribution is that I didn't realise that the Czech Republic didn't use the euro til I went there a couple of years ago.

It's called Flemish.

Acording to a Dutch student I taught

Flemish is 'Dutch with a silly accent' and 'We don't talk about Afrikaans'.

Slight change of topic, there was a TV series called 'Cordon' on a while ago, it was in Flemish but I could understand chunks of it.

I thought Torquay was in Japan!! My mam likes to tell everyone that story! 🙈🙈

user1495997773 · 13/10/2017 06:48

I thought Walsall and Warsaw were the same place, and again with County Durham and County Down. I blame newsreaders for saying their names too quickly!

ApollO88 · 13/10/2017 06:46

I turned 29 this year and I last year I only found out that cows only produce milk when they have had a calf. I simply thought they all just produced milk! Wasn’t till I saw a program about the insemination of cows that I put the whole thing together in my mind!

Housemum · 13/10/2017 06:45

"Segue" isn't "Segway" - the first is I think the word DJd use for one track flowing into the next. Pronounced to rhym with egg. As opposed to Segway, the wheeled thingy

AJPTaylor · 13/10/2017 06:38

That Santa Pod wasnt somewhere in the southern states but was in fact in Welli gborough!

"
I'm my defence, I'm Scottish and knew that our national animal was the unicorn"
Surely it's the haggis? :o

Fabulousdahlink · 13/10/2017 06:24

Ok. That polar bears and penguins are in seperate poles and not together. I think I even thought polar bears ate penguins. In my defence, polar bears and penguins are always in the same area at zoos and my knowledge of arctic and antartic wildlife was based on ngu and foxes glacier mint animations......

Also....

My sister ( who is a DJ) could hardly contain her amusement when I finally realised why drum n bass is called drum n bass. For me it was a genuine lightbulb moment. How she managed to keep driving the car I'll never know..

Esssss · 13/10/2017 06:11

I've got a really stupid one. I have a TERRIBLE sense of direction and when I moved into my then boyfriends place in a new area, I'd walk up the high street to the supermarket but my fella would drive to another branch of the same supermarket. Took me months to realise it was the same supermarket but different entrances (the front on the High Street and the back which is the carpark) whoops!

allegretto · 13/10/2017 05:48

I have mentioned this before but when I was little and satellite tv was new, whenever I heard that people worked in satellite tv I thought they worked actually on the satellite so the newsreaders for Sky etc had a daily commute into orbit.

That when weighing out something messy like soft butter, golden syrup, etc. the simple way to do it is to put the tin or tub on the scales, set the scale at 200g, if you want 200g, and take out butter etc. until scale says zero.
God knows why it took me decades to work this out.

safariboot · 13/10/2017 01:42

Also, I probably would have understood Revelation better when I read it as a child if I had known that a 'seal' was something you put on a closed envelope or box, and not just a swimming animal Grin

safariboot · 13/10/2017 01:40

l thought Lancashire was as up north as you could get before Scotland. Until at 13 we drove from Lancashire to Scotland!

To be fair you're only one off, just got Cumbria between Lancashire and Scotland.

And now for my one. Kind of serious.

If your car engine is not running, you will lose power braking after two or three stops. Then the pedal will feel like an immovable rock. I found this out the hard way.

safariboot · 13/10/2017 01:30

"For years I wouldn't eat mince pies because I didn't want to eat fruity-flavoured beef pies. Of course "mince meat" is not actually meat!!

Once upon a time it was, hence the name.

there is going to be a 'run' on small terracotta tortoises on Amazon.

Surely it would be a slow amble on small terracotta tortoises Grin

safariboot · 13/10/2017 01:21

You can get caper berries too, as the name tells you, they are the berries of the caper plant. They are pickled, usually with the stalk left on, and served like olives as an apero.

That explains why the capers that were served with my meal at a fancy Edinburgh restaurant were so much bigger than the capers I'd encountered previously! Shock

readyforno2 · 13/10/2017 01:05

Haha Daisy I can't iron either!

Only this year I realised that painkillers block the pain receptors in your brain. They don't magically know where/what is causing the pain and go there! I actually think it was an mn thread that taught me that

I'm my defence, I'm Scottish and knew that our national animal was the unicorn

On a recent trip to Belgium found out that the top half of Belgium speaks Dutch.
It's called Flemish.
