Because of my shyness I came out of a chip shop with a portion of fish...

Instead of a cone of chips.

Which is what I asked for but was too embarrassed to correct the woman serving me.

So I ended up eating a massive battered cod on its own for lunch.

Can you please share any silly scenarios you've been in because if your lack of assertiveness to make me feel I'm not alone!

I ordered a caramel espresso frappe but was given a caramel espresso. I don't like coffee as it is (the sugar in a frappe tones down the taste I think) and the caramel espresso was just a shot with caramel included. DH said to just go back and tell them, but I was far too embarrassed. He ended up having it as it was way too strong for me!

I'm reading this thread in disbelief ! You have all really done these things instead of speaking up?
You do realise that people in shops really don't care if you buy something or not, and people doing tastings don't care if you eat or drink it and walk off.
I'm not perfect by a long shot but I suppose being fairly gobby does have its advantages!

CaptainHammer · 29/09/2017 10:07

Haha Houghtonk76 I’m 28 and neither a Gem or Samantha! There aren’t a lot of people that know about Money Pit from my experience ether.
My DH introduced me to it after I said I loved Tom Hanks but hadn’t seen that one. He felt the need to educate me and I loved it! It’s a film his mum loves too so he had watched it a lot when living at home.
In turn I got him in to Labyrinth Grin

Before I could drive If I rang the bell at the wrong stop on the bus I would get off anyway. Either walk the rest of the way or pretend to walk until the bus leaves and get on the next one.
I once suddenly jumped up on the train as I thought I was on going the wrong way and panicked. I realised I WAS on the right train as I did it... but was too embarrassed to stay so got off anyway!

houghtonk76 · 29/09/2017 08:44

CaptainHammer its also possible you are either my sister Gem or my cousin Samantha (older than us by approx 15 years - our mum was 8 when she became an aunt for first time, now nearly 66 she is grandma to 5 under 3 and became a great, great aunt round July / Aug this year - yes...great, great aunt)??? As these are the only other people i know who have seen the money pit!!! 😃😃

houghtonk76 · 29/09/2017 08:38

Re-tarmacked????

houghtonk76 · 29/09/2017 08:37

Showing your age there CaptainHammer ☺!

Sonsmum, we had a geography field trip like this too - prob 1990-1991 in a place called Daglingworth (school was in Bristol, my home town). Roughly 10 of us checking population, etc. School staff took us on coach to diff little village places & we were left there (round age 13/14) for the day. Ours had church, a field & a phone box, so we had to knock on someones door to use the loo! How this wasn't dodgy, even then, i'll never know. We theorised that nothing must ever happen in Daglingworth.

They re-tarmaced the roads while we there.

TheWeatherGirl1 · 29/09/2017 07:43

A few hours after giving birth someone came round to say breakfast was outside, starving I went to find it but it wasn't in an obvious place, and I was too embarrassed to ask (why??), so I quietly returned to my bed and pretended I didn't want any.

I blow my own mind sometimes.

TwoDogs9 · 28/09/2017 23:35

This thread makes me feel so much better about myself! I thought I was the only person who did these sorts of things!

If someone mishears me during a conversation and replies to something I didn't actually ask I rarely correct them and just carry on as if that's what I had asked.

A few years ago I ordered a special birthday cake for DH's 40th. When I went to collect it, it was terrible and nothing like what I'd wanted. In my head I was Confused but I just smiled and said it was fantastic and paid for the bloody thing. Seriously it was laughable it was so awful.

impossible · 28/09/2017 23:14

When I was a student a dog leapt up at me as I walked into a newsagent. The dog's owner apologised and pulled the dog away. I saw a bit of my suede jacket on the floor - the dog had bitten out a lump so I discretely picked it up, put in my pocket and hid the hole with my arm while I bought the milk I'd come in for. The dog owner was in the shop (quite friendly) but I didn't say a word. I went home and did a DIY job of sticking the bit of suede back on. The memory of it still makes me shudder..

I'd like to say I'm more assertive now BUT years later (ie last week) I was queuing up to buy a baguette. Behind me was a woman with a dog and I saw the dog reach up and lick the end of the baguette. I think the woman saw it happen too but she said nothing. I bought the baguette, went home and threw it away... argh.

Believe it or not I'm very assertive when standing up for other people but with myself - if not forearmed - I shrink!

dobbyclub · 28/09/2017 22:41

oh yeah that reminds me, I ordered a cake for DH's birthday some years ago, the first time we'd ever ordered a professional cake apart from the wedding cake. Spent ages talking about it with the cake lady, sounded amazing, except when I came to pick it up it was in milk chocolate rather than the white chocolate I'd definitely and specifically asked for. But obviously didn't say anything!

dobbyclub · 28/09/2017 22:39

I did put up with terrible cleaners because I didn't want to sack them off. They were really awful though. Got rid of them after several months but had to come up with an excuse.

OH sat politely after the hairdresser actually cut a small chunk of his ear off! He didn't want to make a fuss. When she realised she was mortified and at least he didn't pay for the haircut.

I had a very odd experience at the hospital when I didn't want to speak up but it's far too embarrassing for this thread.

RoseLavenderBlue · 28/09/2017 22:34

I keep thinking of more stories like this as I'm reading, here goes....I ordered a white iced wedding cake with lilac flowers and when I went to collect it, the lady opened the box to show me and the whole cake was actually lilac. I didn't say anything as I was a bit shocked actually and then the window of opportunity to say something seemed pass and I didn't feel I could then mention it. So I accepted it, it was fine really, but just not what I'd ordered. At the back of my mind, I knew she was going away for a few days with her kids for half term the next day and if I had said something she probably would have cancelled it to stay home and re- do the cake!

When I was 18 my then boyfriend and I went to stay with his brother. The milk had just ran out and I needed some for my weetabix, so instead of asking if there was a new bottle, I poured orange juice on it and pretended it was how I liked it! Boyfriend's brother shook his head at me as he got a new bottle of milk out of the fridge.

At primary school I went on a Welsh language residential course where you were expected to speak in Welsh as soon as getting on the coach. Shortly I began to feel travel sick, so made my way to the front of the coach and asked a teacher (in Welsh) if I could sit there as I felt sick. After a while I felt better and tried to tell them I felt ok so could I go back to my friends, but the teacher thought I'd said 'stop the coach, I'm going to be sick'. They stoped the coach for me! So I got off and stood there for five minutes taking deep breaths pretending I actually felt ill.

Booked a villa in the South of France and in the guide to the villa there was a restaurant and it had two ** next to it. Booked it and turned up in downtown Grass to the La Bastide St Antoine. Very smart

Ushered to our table and the menus had no prices only for the host

The tasting menu was 250 euros each and for the four of us realized it was going to be £1,000 plus drinks. Pride stopped me from walking out so went for it.

It was outstanding as was the service and of course the 2** was of course a 2 star Michelin Restuarant

In the end paid 1300 euros.....it was good...only live once (thank god)

sn78 · 28/09/2017 22:21

I was in the bakery getting served and I had a cold, which meant my ears were partially blocked so my hearing wasn't it's 100%
Anyway, the server said something and I misheard and said "Sorry, I'm deaf in one ear". What I should of said was: "my sinuses are playing me up and one of my ears are blocked". Thereafter, whenever I went into that bakery and was served by the same assistant, I would try to imitate a hard of hearing person, by over-focusing on their mouth & pretend I was lip-reading. Now, I don't care. Now I just go in and act normal and the server in question, may watch me & how I shop/interact with other customers and think to himself: "There's no way that woman's deaf". Caught in my own trap!!

overnightangel · 28/09/2017 22:18

@Smeaton
If I'm going the wrong way and realise , I always pull my phone out of my pocket, look at it and tut as if I've just been texted and I need to go the other way. Been doing it for years , It's actually become a reflex and I find myself doing it involuntarily

Skone · 28/09/2017 22:14

Went into SuperDrug today to buy a 8 pack of AA batteries. It was the last pack and there was no price. I assumed it would be about £3. When I get to the till the lady rings it up and says in a straight face"That's 28p". "Oh 28 p" I say "did you take the points from my SuperDrug card?" I don't know I must have 28 p she says again. I hand over my money and pay 28 p for Duracell batteries. The girl at the till must be clueless about the price of things. I look at my till receipt and it doesnt say my points have been used. I felt so bad that i underpaid!

Fink · 28/09/2017 22:13

When I was a teenager I went to the hairdresser's on my own for the first time. On arrival, there was no one at the reception desk so I sat down and waited for ages. When someone finally came to the desk, she has me if I was alright and I was too scared to say that I had an appointment booked which was by now overdue, so I said 'Fine, thanks' and continued to sit there for the rest of the afternoon until the shop closed then I walked home again without having had my hair cut.

MinisterForMagic · 28/09/2017 22:12

I have terrible hay fever so pay a local retired man mows the lawn for me. I have previous tried asking him when I saw him to do extra jobs (cutting back shrubs, etc) and he always says yes and then never does it.

He is quite deaf so goodness knows if he has even heard me and maybe he is being polite and saying yes, when he actually can't hear.

If he had a mobile I could text or email I could sort this out in a few minutes but he only has a landline.

I am now so embarrassed that when I see him arrive, I immediately drop to the floor and crawl out of the room and hide upstairs until he has put the note through the door asking for money.

I pay him online so I never have to try to communicate with him again.

BonnieF · 28/09/2017 22:08

In theory, I support small independent food shops but in practice I hardly ever use them because I find the whole thing absolutely excruciating.

What if there's nothing I want to buy? What if everything is ridiculously expensive? What if the serving person is over-familiar or desperate or pushy? What if they offer lots of samples of stuff I don't want? I can't offend them by walking out without buying anything.

So I go to the supermarket instead.

BoredOnMatLeave · 28/09/2017 21:33

Ohh I was with DP for 6 months before I knew how old he was. I didn't want to be rude and ask to I waited until I moved in and had a look at his passport

PuppyMonkey · 28/09/2017 21:16

I went out with a lad at uni for about a month as a result of a complete misunderstanding.

My friend had asked me what I thought of him, and I assumed it was because she fancied him, so I said "he seems really nice." Just to urge her to ask him out or etc.

Next thing, she was dragging me over to him and delightedly telling him I liked him too - I was too mortified to correct them so agreed to a date. And another. For weeks.

Shocking I let it drag on - I even ended up going to his 21st party as his special guest, his family all loved me. Grin

SunshineLollipopsRainbows25 · 28/09/2017 20:59

I've also bought stuff in shops that I don't want if they are small shops with just 1 shop assistant staring at me with just me in the shop I feel so awkward going in looking around and walking back out so I always buy a dog toy or a magnet or just something stupid so I don't have to walk back out not knowing whether to say thanks with eye contact or just walk out and don't acknowledge them

SunshineLollipopsRainbows25 · 28/09/2017 20:56

Mr half a job window cleaner but I can't sack him I feel snide so I keep paying him for a shit job.

SunshineLollipopsRainbows25 · 28/09/2017 20:55

the list is endless
"oh yes I love it" (my hair.. no I don't)
"oo yeah they look good" (eyebrows they were awful)
"oo yeah they're nice, let's get those" (trousers for my daughter in M&S because my friend picked them out and they cost half my weekly budget, didn't want to look cheap I usually shop on the sale rail in tesco)
"ohhhh it's fine it's a treat" (buying my friends coffee when I can't afford it but don't want to look stingey)
"yes how much" (buying love stones from a gypsy because she told me to)
"of course, I'll take 3 please" (buying wrist bands off a man dressed as a superhero for charity I asked how much for 3 he said £9... fucking hell. smiled and bought them anyway)
many many more mainly money type stories as I always pay for stuff when I can't afford it but too stupid to say no thanks or sorry I can't.
