Because of my shyness I came out of a chip shop with a portion of fish...

Instead of a cone of chips.

Which is what I asked for but was too embarrassed to correct the woman serving me.

So I ended up eating a massive battered cod on its own for lunch.

Can you please share any silly scenarios you've been in because if your lack of assertiveness to make me feel I'm not alone!

Thanks for these guys. I have Avoidant Personalty Disorder. I once pretended I hadn't seen my then boyfriend (now Dh!) whilst passing him in a busy street. Fear of confrontation/ drawing attention to myself perhaps?

Hassled · 26/09/2017 22:07

Bastard Logan :o

Someone stopped to have a good moan (and a bit of a shout) about how my son pushed hers over during break time recently and was saying it's not the first time etc etc.

I was so shocked at my sons behaviour I didn't even know how to comment, it was completely out of character. I was trying to ask her questions but I kept being interrupted by her and was aware that it was drawing a bit of a crowd and a fair few people were watching/listening in.

I kind of stood opened mouth and THEN she used the name 'Logan' (that's not my sons name) and stupid me, I ended up just apologising and walking away even though at least HALF of the people standing there must of known that wasn't my sons name.

Stupidly, I felt more relief that my son wasn't the bully!

I've been forcing myself to go to school at the normal time for days. Just to try put on a non embarrassed face. But I haven't seen her there since so who knows !!

Maybe she will turn up on this thread....I'll forgive you...if you forgive me, angry lady.

sunshinestorm · 26/09/2017 22:00

Who else has gone into the shop for a pregnancy test or a packet of condoms and, despite not needing anything else, filled the basket with a load of random things to buy to try and detract the attention away.

2ManyDicksOnTheDancefloor · 26/09/2017 21:58

I once bought a large piece or Parma ham from Lidl thinking it was going to be £8.99, bargain I thought! When I paid for my shopping it came to over £40, i’d only bought the ham and one other thing. Turns out it was £8.99 per kilo. I was too embarrassed to admit my mistake so took £40s worth of ham home and had to admit what I’d done to DH. He was not impressed, he doesn’t even like Parma ham!

FairNotFair · 26/09/2017 21:56

Drank a large cup of (strong, black) coffee because I was handed it in an already awkward social situation and didn't like to say no. I hate coffee, it gives me a headache and then makes me sick.

DarkDarkNight · 26/09/2017 21:50

In fact I am so self conscious on public transport I struggle to get off at stops that are actually convenient for me if it means walking down the aisle while the bus is moving. I get off at busy stops instead in case I fall.

ProseccoMamam · 26/09/2017 21:49

Paid for a gym membership without going to the gym for 11 months because the 1st month that I did actually go I tripped on the treadmill and couldn't face going back.

Dropped £10 in a busy street and left it in case anyone stared at me while I was picking it up and though it wasn't actually mine.

Hid from the window cleaner because I didn't have the exact change to give him and I didn't want to inconvenience him by having to wait for him to dig out £2 change for me (looking back I inconvenienced him more because he had to wait 6 weeks to be paid double and spent a good 3 minutes knocking on my front door for the street to watch)

Crashed my trolley (hardly grazed them at all, they had a flowey skirt on) into someone else in the supermarket and then sat in the asdas toilets crying at how terrible of a person I was-I didn't do my shop and rarely go to that Asda now

I have extreme anxiety, if you couldn't already tellBlush

DarkDarkNight · 26/09/2017 21:49

I feel like I've found my people.

When I was doing my A-levels I had to go to an evening class and got on a bus on the wrong side of the road. Despite knowing I was going in the wrong direction I didn't just get off at the next stop because somebody I knew was in the bus. I could still have made the class on time but instead I took the bus all the way to the next town because I didn't want to look like a tool.

HeyRoly · 26/09/2017 21:48

I once accompanied a friend to give blood. I unthinkingly took a number from someone at the door, despite having no intention of giving blood myself.

I was only 18 and couldn't bear handing the number back and looking like an unfeeling arsehole, too mean to donate blood. So I ended up going through the whole process and ended up fainting dramatically before I'd taken a bite of the biscuit they gave me.

My friend was deemed ineligible and got out of it Envy

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 26/09/2017 21:47

Once I asked for 2 kilos of tomatoes in this fruit and veg shop I used to go to in Battersea. I meant two pounds and he was asking me if I was sure but I was too embarrassed to say I had got it wrong. I just muttered something about some tomato chutney and never went back.

StigmaStyle · 26/09/2017 21:45

You know when you want something in a shop and they don't have it, but they helpfully direct you to somewhere else that might have it?

If I don't have time to, or don't want to, go where they've told me, I still go out of the shop and head off in the direction they've sent me. Then have to turn around and sneak back past the shop hoping they don't see me.

It's so stupid but I'm scared if I don't go where they sent me they might follow me out try to correct me and it will be too embarrassing.

I have also bought things I don't want because I haven't dared say "nooo I've changed my mind!"

I'm a professional in my 40s, feminist and supposedly assertive but I'm scared of shopkeepers!

People. My goodness. Please tell me you've all since been on assertiveness courses!

I of course am perfect and have never, for example, once paid a massive bill that should have never been mine and never claimed it back in expenses because I was too young and shy and new to kick up a fuss.

SnowiestMountain · 26/09/2017 21:43

I decided to treat myself to some Chinese takeaway from the selfridges food hall, I thought ok, this will be expensive, maybe about £8 or so but it's a treat, and I'll enjoy it.

They filled the tubs up and it was £36, for a ready meal, for 1 person!! I paid and then cried when I got to the car BlushGrin

hidinginthenightgarden · 26/09/2017 21:42

I have been to buy foundation, then been told "this is the brush for it". Bought both and was shocked at the total price so checked my receipt and the brush cost more than the foundation did! I took it back the next day.

AfunaMbatata · 26/09/2017 21:41

I recently paid for 64 cheese straws from a bakery, I only wanted 20 but didn't realise how maby theythought I'd asked for untill I saw them putting them fresh into the ovens . Cost over £20!

TealStar · 26/09/2017 21:39

My friend (honest - I'm the most assertive person I know Grin) once told me that she shat herself while on the phone to a cold caller because she was too scared to hang up the phone!

Serafinaaa · 26/09/2017 21:37

When I was a teenager on holiday in a French campsite I once bought a ping pong ball thinking it was a gobstopper. I asked for one from the jar but didn't know the French to say 'put it back it's not what I thought' 😂

Walnutwhiplash · 26/09/2017 21:34

I once accidentally ordered 20 loaves while supermarket shopping online and instead of saying something when they arrived just nodded and cheerily took possession of my bread mountain.

becotide · 26/09/2017 21:30

I can see a bag of cherries coming to £18 in M&S

Their strawberries are £4.50 a punnet in high strawberry season, cherries are much dearer and the punnets are small - a bag holds more than you think

gaggiagirl · 26/09/2017 21:25

I let colleagues call me Michelle for about 4 years because I was too embarrassed to correct them. My name isn't Michelle.

Stayed on the bus because I was too shy to ring the bell to get off.

I have also bought a bag of cherries for ££££££because I was too embarrassed to correct the store assistant.

5rivers7hills · 26/09/2017 21:23

@itsgoodtobehome I don't know... cherries are fucking crazy expensive! A small box in waitrose is like £8 even in the summer so I can easily see how a bag woudl be 16.

QuackDuckQuack · 26/09/2017 21:20

I spent £16 on a chicken at our local (bizarrely expensive) butchers. By the time he'd picked it up and weighed it, I couldn't face saying "£16 for a chicken?" So I paid and have never been back.
