To ask for a round up of all the little MN in-jokes?

Mods, feel free to delete this if it's not okay!

I've been here some months now, and I've noticed a lot of little in-jokes around that come from old threads, some of which are in Classics, etc. Usually when I come across a reference that I don't recognize, someone is kind enough to explain it to me (and sometimes even link the original thread!) but I thought it might be nice, and kind of fun, to gather together as many as we can in one thread!

I'll start. The one that always sticks out to me is the one about the Mexican house thief. That's from this thread.

The other one that had me in absolute stitches was the saga of Sharon, the wasp, and the wine that never reached the carpet, which starts here, and apparently continues here with someone "t-rexing in the Asda"... Hysterical, I tell you.

I'm really hoping some long-time MNers will be along to link to such joys as "cancel the check"; "pom bears"; "Maui"; and the one where everyone MumsNetted as their toddlers :D

(I'm sorry if this is against some unwritten rule. It's not REALLY a thread about a thread, it's a thread about a lot of threads...)

Cross posted with Olenna - who also has much better spelling than I have!

littlewoollypervert · 19/07/2017 16:25

Didn't the biscuit come from s Gordon Brown webchat where m'netters kept adki g his favourite biscuit but he wouldn't answer (cos his assistants weren't passing on the question) and then afterwards it becamw a new icon/emoticon thingie? (Meaning "I can't be arsed answering)?"

OlennasWimple · 19/07/2017 16:24

emesis - the biscuit is supposed to be a snarky way of saying "no comment". I think it originated from a webchat with Gordon Brown who was unable to answer the very straightforward question "what is your favourite biscuit"

I think it's had its day now, though - the amount of "here, have my very first Biscuit " posts means that surely everyone has used it at least once...

(It's supposed to be a jammy dodger, BTW)

Pom Bears had me in stitches.

What about the one with the nanny and the ski lodge and the footprints in the snow? Anyone know what happened there?

SapphireStrange · 19/07/2017 16:11

Oh yes, the Auntie Tantrums thread was lovely. Didn't the child insist on getting into the dog's bed, and Tantrums was terrified that she'd go home and tell her mother she'd been made to sleep with the dog? Grin

Is Tantrums still around? I loved her.

dementedma · 19/07/2017 15:48

agree, auntie tantrums and the toddler was very funny!

emesis · 19/07/2017 15:16

I bloody love Pom Bears. So glad to have read that thread.

Something I don't understand is the 'throws biscuits' thing. I always thought the Biscuit icon was a pineapple with a cherry in the middle. But even if it's a biscuit, what's the context in which people throw them or reference biscuits in a thread? I can see that it's negative but not sure what it's all about.

Please someone link to the @nal sex one at centre parcs - I've still yet to find out what the joke is and I keep hearing about it!

It was honeydragon who immac'ed the baby (and the dog?)

And dyed her baby blue too. No idea where the threads are though

DadDadDad · 19/07/2017 13:39

Two topics that for some reason have generated very heated discussion on more than one occasion:

  1. Is the expression "you've got another thing coming" or "you've got another think coming"?
  1. After using the loo, do you stand up or stay sitting to wipe?

Answers are:

  1. it's think (although I am someone who heard it as thing for most of my life)
  2. who bloody cares?
GinIsIn · 19/07/2017 13:35

I thoroughly recommend the saga of auntie tantrums and the toddler - it's in classics somewhere. It's one of my favourite threads!

A friend is also an MNer and serves Pom bears at every social occasion so she can work out who the other MNers are! Grin

dementedma · 19/07/2017 13:30

there was a very funny one with mock exam questions for teenagers along the lines of "If a teenager has 12 pairs of trainers and they are all left in the hall what is the possibility that
a) people will fall over them regularly
and
b) that teenager in question needs more trainers.

MsHooliesCardigan · 19/07/2017 13:23

I think it's hilarious that the yoni thread is always referenced as being by 'Brian of Hull'. I'm pretty sure he never gave his name but one poster said she imagined him being called Brian. Personally, I imagined him more as a Graham.

OverTheHammer · 19/07/2017 13:16

I saw someone referring to "you're the carcass!" Earlier - id totally forgotten about that! It involved an argument between op and her MIL in which the MIL kept going on about the carcass at Christmas or something and the OP got pissed off snd accused HER of BEING a carcass.

There was also Willy Willy Willy - a woman felt it necessary to shout this at some builders who'd looked at her funny or something.

drspouse · 19/07/2017 12:56

Toilet brushes are somehow a MN no-no but I have no idea where this originated or why.

Zoflora seems to have become trendy but again no idea of the origin.

FruBayerischOla · 19/07/2017 12:47

Similar to the Maui thread, what about TONGA?!

Can't link as the OP had it deleted in the end. But she was looking for a book about Tonga, a copy of which she had loaned to a Princess of Tonga many years previously but it had never been returned. IIRC, there was a chapter about a naval battle which one of her ancestors had been involved in - plus she mentioned something else historical. But she couldn't remember the title or the author.

Many kind MNers were madly Googling books about Tonga, but none of them were correct, according to to OP. It was decided that she might be conflating two different books, but she was having none of it and just kept yelling TONGA all the time Grin

DadDadDad · 19/07/2017 12:46

faith - I've taken the demands to be tongue-in-cheek. You're right that it's become an expectation - although I don't suppose anyone would boycott a juicy thread just because there was no diagram.

faithinthesound · 19/07/2017 12:40

I've noticed that, @DadDadDad. A concerning trend is that some posters are no longer asking for a diagram, or delighting in a diagram when one is forthcoming, but demanding one. I think some people forget that it's supposed to be all in good fun, letting the OPs let off some steam!

Paradise - I don't think the original source spelt "nice" as "naice", that's just more an attempt to parody a posh pronunciation, as in "You have a Waitrose? Oh, how vair naice for you!"

DadDadDad · 19/07/2017 12:35

One that's become a part of the MN culture is that everyone loves a good parking thread (ie a thread involving a dispute between neighbours).

More recently, it has become an in-joke that you can't start such a thread without a diagram showing road layout etc.
