Or is my neighbour about my laundry...?

Name changed in case she's on mumsnet

Don't know NDN well. We are quiet and (I thought!) inoffensive so no issues for the last 6 months we've lived here. There's a low fence between our gardens.

Given that I live in the west of scotland, it's a rare opportunity to hang clothes out on the line to dry, which DH and I have been doing the past few days.

Today NDN appeared at the door and asked me to "be more careful" with my laundry. I initially thought something had blown into her garden and apologised. She said no, that us hanging out "personal items" was embarrassing for her and she didn't want her young sons (who are late primary age I think) seeing things like that. After clarifying she meant bras and knickers I admit I snorted with laughter a bit and said "but don't they see YOUR pants drying indoors!?" to which she said that I clearly didn't want to help and that she'd ask her DH to come over later to speak to my DH once he's in from work!

I have not brought my laundry in and have just done another load. She's glaring from her conservatory. AIBU to ignore her? Or should I bring my offensive undies in off the line?

Yanby, although tbh I don't hang my undies out on the line either. Mainly cos I can't be arsed - I just drape it round the sides of the wash basket. Dries a treat.

Sorry to derail. I do support your right to continue hanging yours out though. Grin

Salmotrutta · 26/05/2017 17:12

I'll bet her DH is a secret knicker watcher.

grittynitty · 26/05/2017 17:12

Unless you're hanging out your Gimp mask and dominatrix gear to air I'd ignore.

specialsubject · 26/05/2017 17:11

My neighbours are elderly churchgoers. With no compunction about putting underwear on the line - and why should they?

This is isn't methodism, it is insanity.

MrsChopper · 26/05/2017 17:11

I actually wished I could decorate your garden with bunting made of colourful garish Primark type thongs and hang them all across your garden. Let those undies fly high!

HoobleDooble · 26/05/2017 17:11

You just reminded me about this idea I saw on Twitter;

Or is my neighbour about my laundry...?

This is hysterical. Is it real? Are there really people like that? My mind is truly boggled. All our underwear goes out on the line including the very raunchy (very small) items that girlfriends various leave around (and I look at in envy). That sounds awful - 2 boys, 1 girlfriend each! Very beautiful. Very slim.

laundryninja · 26/05/2017 17:09

Pyongyang I think this is an excellent approach!

In answer to other questions- yes they are quite religious, I think. We're near Glasgow so not particularly island-ish, and my free presbyterian granny was a great one for sun-bleaching everything white. Including her enormous pants.

I will post a kitten pic when I can get her to sit still!

Her DH hasn't come home yet but mine got finished early and has just arrived, in sweaty cycling gear which has just gone in the wash. I wonder if the bum-protecty bit is offensive too?

I have suggested that instead of putting on the wrestling gear he just stays naked and prances around the house after his shower. We have a glass front door...

i was also wondering about the Wee Free....have you ever put washing out on a Sunday, I believe that is a mortal sin regardless of pants and bras !!

ILoveMyMonkey · 26/05/2017 17:06

She'd hate me... I use reusable sanpro & merrily dry it outside on the line when I have the opportunity with no thought to my neighbours delicate sensibilities.

Me too 😂.

OP your NDN needs a hobby if your underwear is all she has to focus on Confused.

@NavyandWhite no it's not grim, it's clean so how would it be grim Hmm

sunshineintheclouds · 26/05/2017 17:06

Some people are strange. I had this happen no my ndn but someone who's garden is joint on the back of mine.
Convo went like this
Lady : Excuse me
Me: hi you Ok?
Lady: please don't put underwear on your line they offend me.
Me: laughed , well don't look at them then
Lady: huffed and went back in her house.

Confused very strange

Sunshinesuperman · 26/05/2017 17:05

Keep on going, your laundry line, your laundry. I love the idea that two blokes are meant to chat about your underwear. Meanwhile in the 21st century!

GeorgiePeachie · 26/05/2017 17:04

Loads of PP saying it's only unreasonable if it's fetish wear.

But honestly OP, let your freak flag literally fly in the wind. Why all the Fetish shaming. Although really shouldn't be washing leather... :P

Bluntness100 · 26/05/2017 17:03

You just know there is going to be an argument in the neighbours house tonight when the husband refuses to go, gets a bollocking and then either capitulates and appears at the ops door, or point blank refuses thus causing all out war in his home.

If I suggested my husband did this he would laugh like a drain then tell me to sod off, fortunately I don't give a crap what neighbours put on their washing line, even if I could see it. 😂

diddl · 26/05/2017 17:02

"Answer the door wearing it!"

Or not because it's all out on the lineGrin

MrsChopper · 26/05/2017 17:01

Looking forward to an update about the man-to-man talk. Hope her own husband thinks she is batshit too Grin

Oh and I think what she means is she doesn't want her husband to see your underwear....

VickieCherry · 26/05/2017 16:59

I would be tempted to make knicker bunting with Primark cheapies and festoon it along the fence.

Bluntness100 · 26/05/2017 16:58

How bizzare. That's taking prudish to the extreme. Please report back on the man folk conversation. 😂

FuckingDingDong · 26/05/2017 16:57

If he does come round I hope at least that you talk to him yourself-about your underwear!
Answer the door wearing it! Grin
