They're clever chaps. I once worked on a polo ranch and broke my right arm so I had to ride a slow pony (they ride with their left there...). I couldn't mount so I trained the pony to stand next to a haystack so that I could scramble on. The grooms were really bemused as they just leap onto the horses. They watched a few times then one of them took my pony (the outrage!) and lined him up next to the haystack so that he could also climb on. My pony walked off and left him mid air. So loyal!

This is why I am vegetarian and trying to go vegan. I think animals are so special and given the chance all species are capable of amazing things

We live on a farm. Not a working one but have pet sheep and a pig along with horses, dogs, farm cats and chickens and a rabbit. The animals all seem to care for each other and while their is a pecking order they live together peacefully.
The rabbit is DSs and is a new addition. A few months ago we were playing with him in the house and by the time DH put him out it was dark so he didn't notice the cat had climbed in the hutch. I didn't check the rabbit until lunch the next day and when I opened the hutch was met with the cat. Bearing in mind the cats catch rabbits daily and have even been known to go after pheasants I had my eyes half closed for the carnage. No. The rabbit is sitting next to the cat happy as you like?? The cat who was obviously starving shot off into the horses field and returned with a pheasant.

Aw these stories are lovely they are making me weep ! I am 7 weeks pregnant and feeling sick and weepy and they've cheered me right up x

So the horse wasn't intending it as a personal insult which is how I interpreted it.

OP, you and Monkey have moved me to tears! I have a house full of animals and ofter take in a poorly Chicken or too, my cats are immune to the crazy of a chicken pottering around the kitchen and just ignore anything in the house, including our giant house Bunny - they don't even make eye contact with her, but one night she got very ill and seamed very cold and quite so I sat cuddled up with her on the Sofa trying to warm her up - My old cat (14) sat the other side of the bunny, pretty much on top of her and within an hour the bunny perked up and was back to normal - and the cat as gone back to ignoring her.

Awww! They are amazing animals. I miss him, he was an ex-racer and typically skittish, I was an under confident rider, but looking back I now realise he'd never have done anything to hurt me.

Strange how something so powerful can be so gentle.

Has anyone ever seen the documentary (I think it was Attenborough) where the crocodiles carry the baby turtles across the river in their mouths? I can't remember why but there is some reason it's beneficial to them to keep the turtles alive. I couldn't believe it when I saw that.

One of my dogs (a 45kg beast) once brought me a one month old kitten in his mouth. I took it straight to the vet and the vet could not believe that it didn't have a tiny scratch on it.

Then my 9kg male maine coon cat adopted it, potty trained it, and cared for it like a mother.

She's now a strapping cat and absolutely lords it over all the other animals. MC still treats her like she was a tiny kitten and lets her do whatever she wants with him.

Monkey you've just made me cry.
My dog is usually a big daft bugger but after losing my Nan in October, he's been the best comforter.
He'll lick my tears if I'm crying downstairs and if I'm in my room he'll cry until he can get to me and give me a big cuddle.

OP you have a glorious pony! The horses here are all murderers. They drown birds in their field buckets, stamp birds to death in the paddocks and drown rats in the stable water. Blood thirsty equines.

That's fab! I believe you. I loaned a horse a few years back, he was a love, but quite standoffish and usually couldn't care less. One day I turned up at the stables really upset, crying and a blubbering wreck. I'd been having a really bad time. As I started grooming him, he put his head over my shoulder and pulled me really close to into him, and held me there for a good few minutes. We stood perfectly still for minutes, me sobbing, and him hugging me.

It was the best hug I've ever had.

A few years ago I lived in a house with a garden pond, my dog who is a newfoundland and very fond of cats went out for a pee one day. He came back and stood at the door barking at me, When I came out to see what was up, he walked towards the pond, dafty me didn't catch on quick enough and tried to call him indoors, he ignored me and started barking again and walking away from me. I followed him and there was a poor dead cat in the pond, the minute he knew I had understood him, he stopped barking and went indoors. I fell in love with him even more that day..Poor kitty :(
