Went in a cafe of the wrong class today. [sad face]

There were 2 cafes near each other. I picked the wrong one. I'm lower middle class and the cafe was for middle middle class to about lower upper class. I should have guessed by the little accent they put over the 'e' in the name.

I went in and up to the counter and asked for a sausage roll and a hot chocolate and they didn't give it to me. I was told to go sit at a table. My sausage roll came served on a plate with salad which, and you might not believe this, somebody had drizzled on! I'm guessing it was basil oil or some such frippery, although the cafe with an accent was next to a boating lake the same colour.

I should have gone to the other one where I'm sure I could have just taken the sausage roll in a bag or on a paper plate without being drizzled at. Sad

It's hard being English.

Barbara loving the fish cake picture, haven't had one like that since I was a student - we used to have them in a breadcake, a fish cake butty, preferably with peas - heaven.

NotAMammy · 27/10/2016 20:44

boffin I genuinely think their baguettes are good, the bread is crispy and there's no shit in my ham and cheese. Just butter, ham and cheese.
Sausage rolls are great, but I do believe the recipe changes depending on where you are, so they suit 'local' tastes.
Yum yums are so good that Marksies et al do small fancy versions at twice the price.
I do love the occasional naughty steakbake, my OH professes love for the mince pie, not the festive kind.
The ham and cheese melt is the most disappointing thing for me though. They are NOT like the ham and cheese jambons that you get from an Irish deli counter. In fact, I don't know of a good deli counter like they do at home.

MrTCakes · 27/10/2016 20:41

Quite distressed at the thought of a warmed shortbread.

Ginslinger · 27/10/2016 20:37

I need to point out the pot pourri is very 1990's and no amount of organic boxes from anywhere will disguise this.

WeArePregnant11 · 27/10/2016 20:37

Interesting :) thank you for the recommendation.

My spouse is sitting next to me and nodding. So, yay for the hot tub. But I currently can't go in a hot tub anyway. So, that project will have to wait...

BoffinMum · 27/10/2016 20:35

These are the bestest hot tubs ever. I am thinking of hiring one for a birthday weekend.

FadedRed, of course you are right. It's so long since I saw or never mind ate a Baked Alaska. BlushThis thread is going to lead me astray. Shock I NEED sweet and sickly. NOW.

BoffinMum · 27/10/2016 20:33

I have to say I have never been to Greggs. I think there is one reasonably near my work, though. What is good there?

WeArePregnant11 · 27/10/2016 20:32

boffin

Interesting you say this. because I remember them from the alps but seeing as I'm Swiss that's nothing fancy for me :D

JoffreyBaratheon · 27/10/2016 20:29

I once went into a chippy with someone who got upset when they realised they had a Sainsbury's bag in their hand and thought the chip shop owner might be offended they also bought food elsewhere.

I thought they were joking and laughed myself stupid.

A couple of years later a psychiatrist diagnosed them with paranoid personality disorder...

WeArePregnant11 · 27/10/2016 20:29

Actually more like this. I hope American won't think a hot tub like this is trashy. Or else my spouse might not want one...

Je suis dèsoleé Annie it's 46 years since I did French badly!--

BoffinMum · 27/10/2016 20:29

Wearepregnant, that kind of hot tub is quite U because it resembles hot tubs outside one's ski chalet in Aspen. It's the blue plastic types that are non-U. We know this because Cheri Blair has got one.

M0stlyHet · 27/10/2016 20:28

I suspect neither the working nor the upper classes have pot pourri anywhere in their houses.

Grayson Perry's episode on the middle classes had me in stitches. The upper middle were distinguished by their love of penguins (the books, not the biscuits) in replicas of the original covers. The lower middle were distinguished by the infinitessimal gradations of status they gave to one another's cars.

FadedRed · 27/10/2016 20:27

PuppetinParadize. Noooo! My deep fried ice cream was real super clotted cream ice cream, dipped in super fine tempura batter, rolled in fine shredded coconut flakes and rapidly deep fried, so that the outside was hot and crispy and the ice cream inside was still frozen. It was delicious!
Baked Alaska is a sponge cake base with ice cream on to which is surrounded completely by meringue and baked in the oven to brown the meringue. The ice cream remains frozen because it is insulated by the sponge and meringue.

hollyisalovelyname · 27/10/2016 20:27

Five Guys has just opened in Dublin and they are queueing out the door ( seriously) to spend shed loads of money on a burger that you can't get into your mouth- I know... I queued too Blush
Then again I've seen them queue up in the rain and the cold at Scrumdiddly's Ice Cream Parlour too. Every.Single.Night in summer.

VanillaSugarandChipSpice · 27/10/2016 20:27

Tiggy I don't have pot pourri but Jo Malone reed diffusers and Dyptyque candles. To which class does one belong?

WeArePregnant11 · 27/10/2016 20:26

As a non-British person living with my American spouse in Edinburgh this thread is so...confusing Confused

I'm apparently very lower class according to British standards.

I love bacon, sandwiches and everything fried. I actually simply love food in general Blush.
And hot tubs are awesome. We had these (they looked basically like the one in the pic) when I was little and I was totally planning on buying one. Oh well, they're awesome! Let the neighbours think whatever they want Grin

Tiggy upper middles wouldnt have pot pourri.
they would probably keep their organic weed in the little wooden box

TiggyD · 27/10/2016 20:24

You can identify the middle classes by where they keep their pot pourri.

Lower Middle: China.
Middle Middle: Cut Glass.
Upper Middle: A little wooden box picked up in a souk in Marrakesh.

Five Guys has a white board with not only the region of today's pototoes, but the farm of today's potatoes, the farmer's name AND also the names of the potato pickers.

And beer. In bottles.

Joinourclub · 27/10/2016 20:18

I was once asked if I wanted black tea. Of course I said I'll have it with milk. The waiter sniffed 'I mean would you like black or green tea'. Tbf this was Brighton.

PuppetInParadize · 27/10/2016 20:17

But, Pacific, you live in the land of Deep Fried Everything. Different rules apply. Smile

Lambzig · 27/10/2016 20:16

MaQueen, your post at 19.44 had me crying with laughing for about 5 mins. Lost in translation explaining to DH though.

The trouble with artisanal this and hand reared that is that it always tastes so disappointing.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 27/10/2016 20:15

Vanilla
I find Five Guys a bit of a mystery. Is it middle class because its supposedly more authentic with retro formica.

Its all very confusing... I think I know where GBK and Byron sit on the poncetastic scale but Five Guys ... not sure
