Went in a cafe of the wrong class today. [sad face]

There were 2 cafes near each other. I picked the wrong one. I'm lower middle class and the cafe was for middle middle class to about lower upper class. I should have guessed by the little accent they put over the 'e' in the name.

I went in and up to the counter and asked for a sausage roll and a hot chocolate and they didn't give it to me. I was told to go sit at a table. My sausage roll came served on a plate with salad which, and you might not believe this, somebody had drizzled on! I'm guessing it was basil oil or some such frippery, although the cafe with an accent was next to a boating lake the same colour.

I should have gone to the other one where I'm sure I could have just taken the sausage roll in a bag or on a paper plate without being drizzled at. Sad

It's hard being English.

You've saved me £1.40 and more importantly, LUNCHTIME FOOD DISAPPOINTMENT, for which I'm truly grateful Kleptronic.

Who pays £7? SEVEN ENGLISH POUNDS for a Cornish Pasty? You don't even pay that in Padstein, Cornwall! Ye Gods!

Rattle I'm in Leeds and we have sliced potato fishcakes here, as well as Sheffield it seems. Barnsley is wrong as far as fish cakes are concerned. You can keep your rissoles Smile.

Never heard them called patties either, it's just a fish cake. Isn't it amazing how things change so much over relatively short distances?

BakeOffBiscuits · 27/10/2016 22:56

I could murder a sausage roll right now. And I'm a vegetarianHmm

EverySongbirdSays · 27/10/2016 22:55

Ok? Confused I wasn't aware I was "in crowd" anything but actually.

It's the way it's punctuated makes it funny, I wasn't being superior Confused

hazeyjane · 27/10/2016 22:53

See I love a poncy coffee shop, not too poncy though. My mum always wants to go to Poppins and places called The Golden Egg, all sticky table cloths and tea with a film of oil on it. I hated going to them when I was a kid and I hate them now. I want a nice cappuccino and a Portuguese tart.

SpeckledyBanana · 27/10/2016 22:53

Tenby has a posh Cornish pasty shop now. I think they are missing the point of both Cornish pasties and the seaside, but DH loves them. Wierdo.

paxillin · 27/10/2016 22:51

This thread is grin particularly the occasional poster not getting it. Quick, try and look cool, the in-crowd are here!

SpeckledyBanana · 27/10/2016 22:50

Rattle, Fecci's is the only place I've ever seen a rissole, I had to have it explained to me by the nice chap behind the counter with this face > Confused but toddler DD loved it! Didn't know they were a Northern thing, assumed they were Welsh Blush

I don't know about your poor Sausage Roll experience OP, but my last Cornish Pasty experience was at Chatsworth, SEVEN POUNDS with drinks, but if one must be fleeced at least it's by the aristocracy.

Kleptronic · 27/10/2016 22:42

The Katsu Chicken Bake, that's the fucker. Heman I strongly advise you to swerve it. Should be called The Catsick Cardboard Crime against the Universe.

paxillin · 27/10/2016 22:40

My dh introduced ds's organic quinoa fed friend to chip butties. The sheer delight was a joy to watch.

@ BarbaraofSeville

"In Yorkshire, a fish cake is a slice of fish between 2 slices of potato which is then battered and deep fried. They can be substantial enough to serve as a small meal or decent snack on their own"

That's not a Yorkshire thing, it's a Sheffield thing. I'm from Barnsley and to us, a fishcake is mashed potato and fish, covered in breadcrumbs. In Sheffield this is called a rissole. What they call a fishcake, the rest of Yorkshire calls a pattie. It's a regular topic of argument discussion in these parts!

Have skimmed the thread so I might have missed it....... but has nobody mentioned the weirdness of having a sausage roll with hot chocolate? A sausage roll (preferably Staniforth's) needs tea, or coffee at a push. Hot chocolate should surely be served with cake, or perhaps a toasted teacake?

And I don't have weird food rules, honest :-)

TiggyD · 27/10/2016 22:38

There's an independent bakery near me. Great price for their pasties/slices and it's nice to know you're supporting an independent competing against a chain. Although I must admit their fillings look like they've been eaten before then regurgitated into the puff pastry. I'll stick with the Cornish pirate place up the road in future.

Ah. I've really enjoyed this thread! I've read it all...it's like MN from ten years ago! No "lighthearted" disclaimer and plenty of wit. Thanks!

meridithssister · 27/10/2016 22:34

Yes it must be Feccis if one is in Tenby.
Husband was given chutney with a sausage roll in Pembroke, but we cancelled out that incident by buying a 'I love Wales' mug and tea towel like what the lower classes do in the shop next door.

TiggyD · 27/10/2016 22:32

I was in Oban last year and had a sausage that was coated in hash brown type potato and deep fried. As I was eating it my pulse started racing and I felt light-headed. I genuinely thought It might kill me. Strangely enough I decided to risk death and finished it.

Ah. The Katsu Chicken Bake Kleptronic. I have been tempted but your review is noted. Sausage rolls and corned beef pasties for me.

gillybeanz · 27/10/2016 22:30

Pound Bakery 2 cheese n onion pasties for a £1
Their sausage rolls are too greasy for me, and mediterranean is too orange and gets everywhere. Tastes nice though.
I saw an EA get stuck with one of these before and it's funny watching women from the Travel shops with pie in their hands.
Pies have to come from proper shops, I'm a pie snob.
Best one is Greenhalgh's, Galloways at a push.
Guess where I live Grin

See, I feel asking for a 'flat white' is accepting, nay, buying into and supporting the whole notion of posh coffee.
I just want coffee.
In a mug, milk, no sugar, thanks.
I do accept a cup and saucer as long as the cup is not too small

Wine. Oh my, there's a whole other minefield.

I do like asking for the 'second cheapest' on the menu - everybody knows that's the best one or at least best value for money one, right?
Yes, I am a classy bird Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 27/10/2016 22:27

Is the class divide with Greggs whether you let your DC wash one down with a Fruit Shoot rather than water?

Hassled · 27/10/2016 22:24

Never buy one of those things in Greggs that looks like bacon in half a croissant. The concept is great - seems like it'd be delicious. But the bacon you can't see under the pastry is the flabbiest thing in Flabland and they've also hidden a layer of white shite inside for no reason I've ever fathomed.
