With a human skull in the garden?

Slippersandacuppa · 07/05/2016 20:45

Because I've never been in this situation before.

We've been tidying up the garden and have piles of rubble all over the place. One of our rickety old fences borders a graveyard (very old belonging to ancient church) and I'm assuming the skull sort of drifted under our fence and has been near the top of the soil for a while. I hope.

I've googled but can't seem to find much info. I'll be contacting the parish council on Monday but wondered if it warrants a call to 101 (or whatever it is) to register it just in case it's not a graveyard wanderer Confused

Anyone had a similar experience?!

So, is the skull also from a sheep?

No that is definitely not a sheep cranium - it would be the brainiest baa lamb ever!

EBearhug · 08/05/2016 23:19

Some years back, the next door farm were digging out some foundations and came across a skeleton. Police got involved. Turned out to be a Roman legionary, which was much easier as far as paperwork goes.

So, is the skull also from a sheep?

Are we talking Shyorrick the Sheep here?

Elledouble · 08/05/2016 22:50

I have enjoyed this thread mightily! All I've found in my garden is a set of false teeth Sad

saffronwblue · 08/05/2016 22:09

What else you got down the back of the ossuary garden, op?

shinynewusername · 08/05/2016 22:04

My money is on props fallen out of the rucksack of an itinerant actor on his way to Stratford.

OMG, OP - I think you'll find the skull is the original Yorick. And just in time for Shakespeare's anniversary too. I sense a moneyspinning opportunity with gullible cultured tourists.

Isabella and the Pot of Basil. Here.
In summary - Isabella loves Lorenzo. Her brothers disapprove. They kill Lorenzo, tell Izzie that he's gone sailing. L comes back as some sort of ghost, Izzie finds the body, cuts off the head, brings it back and plants it in a pot of basil which then grows well enough to make copious amounts of pesto. Evil brothers work out L is in the pot and steal the basil. There is no more pesto. I'm pretty sure that's correct.

Shannith wasn't there a Keat's? poem about the pot of basil where someone kept a head in it? Was someone trying to recreate this, only your pot of thyme was too small for a human head. Macabre.

SilverBirchWithout · 08/05/2016 21:41

Are there any sheep or hobbits, or sabre-toothed tigers in Hamlet?
My money is on props fallen out of the rucksack of an itinerant actor on his way to Stratford.

Slippersandacuppa · 08/05/2016 21:40

If you're right akkakk, and it's a perfectly plausible theory, YS's head is way older than the church. Like, 10000 years old.

Just found this little nugget :

According to paleontologists, saber tooth tigers must have also preyed on prehistoric humans, but there is no evidence to support this claim.

There is now!

This reminds me of the day I found a perfectly severed small grey cats head in a plant pot of thyme that I was repotting. That I had been eating for about a year. The herbs,, not the cat.

I had dug over the garden the previous winter and used the soil in pots.

DP was away at the time. I put it at the back of the garden with the pot over it. until the flies came.

I had no choice but to bag it up in approx 75 black bin liners and put it in the rubbish.

I drank a lot of wine before I got the courage to do that.

Slippersandacuppa · 08/05/2016 21:35

Phew. Although poor sheep Sad What happened to him or her?

Will everyone please stop leaving their bones in my garden?

Perhaps Yorick took the hobbit's leg with aggression as he was starving. As he was outside the faith and could not get alms. Gandalf smote him which left him with the hole in his skull.

akkakk · 08/05/2016 21:33

Come on :)
Sabre-toothed tiger femur and hole in the top of the skull - pretty obvious really!
Did the skull rattle? The tooth may have broken off...

n.b. small femur and small hole = cute & cuddly sabre-toothed tiger cub... Maybe a pet that was over-exited... I think it isn't Yorick but Fred Flintstone!

Dunno - my anatomy knowledge, somewhat rusty at the best of times, is definitely limited to humans.

Dog maybe?

Slippersandacuppa · 08/05/2016 21:22

Could it really not be a sheep?

OP posts:
Slippersandacuppa · 08/05/2016 21:21

I don't know. I imagine a hobbit with a missing leg could be quite fierce.

OP posts:
shinynewusername · 08/05/2016 21:19
Wink

So definitely not human then. Hobbit & komodo dragon still distinct possibilities. I hope for the safety of your DC that it's the former, OP...
