With a human skull in the garden?

Slippersandacuppa · 07/05/2016 20:45

Because I've never been in this situation before.

We've been tidying up the garden and have piles of rubble all over the place. One of our rickety old fences borders a graveyard (very old belonging to ancient church) and I'm assuming the skull sort of drifted under our fence and has been near the top of the soil for a while. I hope.

I've googled but can't seem to find much info. I'll be contacting the parish council on Monday but wondered if it warrants a call to 101 (or whatever it is) to register it just in case it's not a graveyard wanderer Confused

Anyone had a similar experience?!

Ask for it to be DNA tested, upload the results to one of the DNA matching websites and look for the nearest relative.

You might have a lovely early Anglo-Saxon grave if you have animal and human bones buried together! Were there teeth on the scull and were they ground down?

I so want to be a dotty elderly Auntie who sends that game to all of her neices and nephews at Christmas! It's brilliant.

Apologies for the hijack. I'm sure your skull is v. nice, OP. I like the view of the churchyard from your garden too.

Natsku · 09/05/2016 09:42

I want to buy that trepanation game. It looks like its quite educational.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 09/05/2016 09:39

No, to be fair, I wasn't keen either! Grin

Nice, but quite destructive and possibly very smelly. STILL haven't worked out how it got in!

notquitegrownup2 · 09/05/2016 09:33

Sharon Shock Grin Shock Grin Can't believe that three pages back you posted pictures of a trepanation game and no-one else snorted/reacted/posted! Brilliant!

CherishFindensRulerOfDeath · 09/05/2016 09:31

Why is there no photo of the front?!?! I want to see!!

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 09/05/2016 09:13

is the hole n the top of the skull??

i cannot make sense of that picture!

I am now wondering if it was a show skull/skeleton..medial peeps..what are they called?? Educational effort?? And someone wanted rid of it and felt it needed a decent burial.

SnuffleGruntSnorter · 09/05/2016 08:27

My garden also adjoins a churchyard, I'm tempted to spend the day prospecting for skulls!

Slippersandacuppa · 09/05/2016 07:31

*of

I'm multitasking as I'm also far too invested in the fate of poor YS. Will no one think of the children?

Picture of the row of spikes at the top of the fence within a metre is where we found YS Shock

Jeffrey You've given me an idea. Hang on.

Witches That's very cute but I'm not sure I'd like one running around the house!

Fascinating thread!

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 09/05/2016 01:29

Is the hole posdibly post mortem e.g. previously articulated skull or a particularly vicious bit of couch grass?

My uncle was the priest in a parish where bones regularly washed out of the cemetry. He did a lot of reinternments.

shinynewusername · 09/05/2016 01:25

Whenever I miss the sunshine of Oz, I remind myself about the homicidal wildlife. Oh, and fucking Spinifex (still picking it out of my socks, 6 years later..).

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 09/05/2016 00:47

Yeah, that's bad shiny - I haven't heard one walking across the carpet yet, but occasionally the buggers fly around and that's a sound you don't want to hear in the dark!!

shinynewusername · 09/05/2016 00:39

Count yourself lucky Thumb. I once woke in the night in Oz to hear something crossing the floor. Not only was it a cockroach; it was a cockroach large enough to make audible footsteps on carpet.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 09/05/2016 00:34

Clicking and scraping in the night - oddly enough, that happened to me last night (in Australia, so after this thread). Woke up in the small hours to hear rustling and then very fast footsteps - assumed DS1 had needed to rush to the loo for some reason, so got up to check he was ok (he almost never gets up in the night).

Heard toys being played with! So assumed he might be sleepwalking (never done it before but you never know...) and put the big room light on. NO child! Followed the sounds and...

bugger me, there was a socking great grey possum in the house! Shock
No idea how it got in (still need to work that out) but it needed to go out, so I went to open the back door and by the time I got back it was trying to go up the chimney Hmm. It didn't seem very scared of me, I have to say - just behaved pretty much like a cat and looked at me, while I was coaxing it to come on out of there. It was pretty cool, actually (haven't found any excreta of any kind yet, guess I won't think it's so cool if/when I do!)

JeffreySadsacIsUnwell · 09/05/2016 00:24

That hole in the top of the skull... Who says it was made from the outside? What if it was made from the INSIDE 😮? That would explain a small neat hole with no fracturing.... Maybe he was decapitated and his head stuck on a pike, placed in a central village/town location (just outside the church) as a deterrent? Then his head eventually fell off the pike, rolled along the hedgerow and settled in what is now your garden.

Sleep well, OP.

Grin 💀👻

ExpandingRoundTheMiddle · 08/05/2016 23:58

It's nearly midnight OP. Listen carefully Grin

ExpandingRoundTheMiddle · 08/05/2016 23:56

When you wake in the night and hear clicking and scraping, that'll be his jaw and lower skull out looking for the bit you've given to PC Upanddown.

shinynewusername · 08/05/2016 23:50

Fret not, OP, I bet Yorrick is loving it. A few centuries in a secluded churchyard must have been a little dull. Now he's starring in his own crime drama.

WakeUpFast · 08/05/2016 23:45

Sorry about your eyes Slippers Grin

www.theguardian.com/cities/2015/jan/22/death-city-grisly-secrets-victorian-london-dead

This is an interesting article about how the Victorians dealt with dead people.
It's actually not surprising finding a skeleton or human remain in your garden. How many people have lived on earth and died? We're probably all on top of a skeleton or human remains right now. Good night! Hope that doesn't scare you!

Slippersandacuppa · 08/05/2016 23:42

I've just read back over the thread and realised there are loads of questions I didn't answer - sorry! I don't have a photo of the front, I'm not freaked out by the garden yet, and we moved here so the kids could have a swallows and amazons childhood but this is taking it a bit far.

I'm trying to go to sleep but wondering if we may have pissed YS off by arresting part of his head? I mean, he's not been that far away from it for at least 10,000 years. PC Dogman said they have two holding cell blocks and the closest one is roughly 10 miles away. He might not like that very much.

And the sheep might be cross about all the attention. They don't like being in the spotlight.

😳😕😯
