That must be who John Stonehouse copied. He faked his death by leaving his clothes on a beach. Back in the '70's. I think the Rise and Fall of Reggie Perrin ran with the idea too.

MrSlant · 23/03/2016 23:27

A swimming pool! I can't decide if that is perfect or taking the piss Grin. RIP Harold Holt, leader of a huge nation who were just too relaxed to keep an eye on their boss. I can't help but warm to a man who liked to go for a swim in the sea however foolhardy that can turn out to be in Australia.

Cerseirys · 23/03/2016 23:20

That was Harold Holt, who disappeared at sea. No body found and conspiracy theories about but by now he's definitely dead.

And I don't know whose idea it was, but a tribute to the man, who drowned, is the Harold Holt Memorial Swimming Pool.

MrSlant · 23/03/2016 23:04

Whilst we are vaguely on the subject of assassinations didn't Australia just lose one if it's Prime Ministers back in the 60's? Like literally he went missing and no one is 100% sure where he went. I think he has been since declared drowned (which isn't funny I know, it's just when I look at the fleet of vehicles that follow each American president the idea that a country could just misplace it's leader is quite refreshing) (not to his family though) .

katemiddletonsothermum · 23/03/2016 22:44

Is the Boston Tea Party the same thing as the Chicago Deep Pan Pizza party?

Lweji · 23/03/2016 21:43

lostincumbria
You're a genius. And had me fooled in the first two posts.

SenecaFalls · 23/03/2016 19:37

It's his initials. His name is John Ellis Bush.

Cocolepew · 23/03/2016 18:53

What sort of name is Jeb? Is it short for Jebadee?

quencher · 23/03/2016 18:20

Yes, and there is a third bush, jet bush

I honestly blame auto correct for this.

SenecaFalls · 23/03/2016 18:07

Grin at Boston Tea Party

katemiddletonsothermum · 23/03/2016 18:03

What about the Boston Tea Party? That sounds rather nice. I'd like to go to one if they have cucumber sandwiches and Earl Grey tea served in flower cups and saucers.

AcrossthePond55 · 23/03/2016 17:52

I LOVE this! I'd be tempted to start an 'American comments on British Politicians/Political History' thread, but I'd be afraid it would end up either in a bunfight or with zero posts.

RudeElf · 23/03/2016 16:10

Can someone please tweet this thread to POTUS. If only so the SCROTUS idea is planted Grin

SenecaFalls · 23/03/2016 16:02

Andylion I don't know much about George P's positions; he's kept a fairly low profile. But my guess is that he is not a fan of Trump or his proposals.

The story of Jeb and Columba is actually quite sweet. They met as teenagers while Jeb was on a school sponsored service program in Mexico. They married young as well; I don't think Columba even spoke English when they married.

lavenderdoilly · 23/03/2016 15:40

FDR did 3 but that was wartime and he died part way through - I thought you were making a light hearted praise thread for Michelle Obama. Who is fab btw. No, as pp have told you, they only get two goes (assuming they are reelected).

legotits · 23/03/2016 15:33

Completely brilliant, erudite and fuzzy thread that made me chuckle.

Andylion · 23/03/2016 15:22

Cerseirys and Sencea, where does George P. stand regarding building a wall along the Mexican border?

Twistedheartache · 23/03/2016 15:12

PMSL at this thread. Thank you for livening up an otherwise dull afternoon at work.
It's scary that in a world with endless information at our fingertips that so many or so ill-informed. Maybe there should be a general knowledge gcse????

Hope Hills gets elected now just so that Bill can be SCROTUS (tee hee)

SanityClause · 23/03/2016 15:10

Who could blame them, Calla?

I bet it took quite a lot of time to summon up the courage.

CallaLilli · 23/03/2016 14:59

Interestingly (or perhaps not) Dubya is a lot older than his siblings, who were all born in fairly quick succession. His parents had him when they were fairly young but then waited several years before continuing their family.

SenecaFalls · 23/03/2016 14:56

Yes, George P's mother, Columba, is Mexican by birth. He is bi-lingual as well.

SenecaFalls · 23/03/2016 14:51

The sister is Dorothy, by the way. There was another sister, too, who died of leukemia as a child.

Cerseirys · 23/03/2016 14:50

The sister is Dorothy (I think). A Dorothy Bush sounds like some kind of shrubbery.
