the worst thing I have ever done due to child induced fatigue

I feel awful about this. DS had me up a lot last night as a result I got a maximum of 4 hour sleep, as a result I am bordering on exhausted, particularly with the other one just back at school.

Anyway we went out for a walk this morning to a park which is a good 15 minutes by car. I got home, went to get him out and realised I hadn't strapped him - I had been driving down an A road at 50 and he wasn't strapped him. I still feel awful about it. I think it is probably the worst thing I have ever done. We are snuggling up on the sofa now and resting. Has anyone else ever done similar? Also, how is it people manage to not be dopy when they are so tired?

Walked out of JL with a £70 moses basket with sandals and and clothes for ds1 in it - hot tired late pregnancy with toddler in tow. I had to leave that moment . I found stuff next time I went back to the car 3 days later.

Left Ds1 at gym class - we lived round the corner, the gym owners walked him home. The doorbell woke me from my stupor on the sofa.

Gone to supermarket to buy stuff.. Given up halfway round abandoned trolley and gone home empty handed getting packet sarnies and crisps from garage on way home as alternative groceries.

I'm ROARING at 'tried to put the cat in the jumperoo' Grin

That desperate search for the baby in the bed isn't sleep deprivation j don't think. It's something hormonal. I had it three times and it remains the most frightening experience of my life. Desperately looking for ds, convinced I'd killed him and he was trapped under the mattress. Dh was shouting 'he's in his cot' but I was in a trance, almost. Horrible .

Squidiot · 14/09/2015 16:43

It's only this weekend that I sat down on the passenger side and wondered where the steering wheel was Grin. dd2 gave me a very funny look but in my defence I drive on the continent a lot so am quite pleased that once I find the steering wheel I generally manage to drive on the correct side of the road at least Blush.

Tiredemma · 14/09/2015 16:34

Poured Anbesol over my noodles (believing it to be soy sauce)

Showered with my glasses on

Squidiot · 14/09/2015 16:29

With hindsight I am almost fondly remembering some of the things I did.

I once put a teabag into a mug and poured freshly brewed coffee on top. I only realised what I'd done when I got to the bottom of the mug and wondered what the disgusting looking brown thing was...

Also tried to get a very fast asleep baby to latch on before realising it was the cry of seagulls that woke me, not dd Confused. Another time I tried to pat dh back to sleep when he made a sound Grin.

I still hand coats, shoes, school bags to the wrong child so the baby brain has never really left me Sad

Grin Flowers Thanks Becca.

Hi everyone - this thread has received quite a few MN Classics nominations, and we can see why. We'll pop it over there now Grin

Squidiot · 14/09/2015 14:04

Just nominated this thread for classics... I've been in tears laughing, all in recognition of the things I did when the dc were younger.

PurpleSkyatthewateringhole · 12/09/2015 21:19

One time I forgot to fasten the baby car seat in the car. So baby Ds was fastened into the car seat but the car seat wasn't secured into the car.

I also dropped a cup of coffee down me mid presentation.

But 6years later, the absolute worst thing I did because of tiredness was eat to stay awake. A couple of biscuits with a cup of coffee, it didn't seem much. Now I'm a stone overweight.

MamaLazarou · 12/09/2015 21:06

Walked straight in front of a moving car. Amazingly, it stopped in time and the driver wasn't hurt.

DH and I had some hilarious, desperate conversations when DS was tiny about the things we would do for 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep. Would you lick so-and-so's armpit, eat a tramp's beard hair, etc. So funny to look back on now!

christinarossetti · 12/09/2015 20:58

There are significant neurological changes in the brain when you have a baby.

Nothing to put anyone off hiring a women for any role, but very dramatic things do happen.

Thank goodness. The whole thing wouldn't work unless there was a biological imperative to look after the baby, keep checking s/he is okay, impulse to engage the baby etc.

PorcupineNecktie · 12/09/2015 20:48

Bullettoothtony I thought you meant you'd been driving against the traffic on the motorway and wondered how you'd managed to do that for two hours!

Bullettoothtony · 12/09/2015 01:27

I went to visit a friend who lives an hour away. Coming home, I got in the motorway going in the wrong direction. I only realised my mistake when the motoway ran out 2 hours later

Rivercam · 11/09/2015 23:15

I can remember going, out to a mums and tots morning with my t shirt on inside out Blush

defineme · 11/09/2015 23:08

I always sleep on same side of bed and the dtwins had a particular boob each to breastfeed from, so in the middle of the night when i fell asleep whilst feeding them it was dtwin2 who i dropped and slid off (our thankfully low) our bed onto the floor, not oncc but twice...he is now a strapping 10 year old but i was hysterical at the time.

PorcupineNecktie · 11/09/2015 23:02

Remembered another one!

I've always had quite an extensive candle collection but at one point had them all stored in a small wicker box. Placed box on top of storage heater because it was summer and wasn't using them. By the time winter came around, I'd long forgotten this.

Heating went on, smoke everywhere Blush. We were picking melted candles out of the radiator for ages after that one!

Libitina · 11/09/2015 22:55

It's surprising that any baby makes it to their first birthday. They must be more resiliant than we realise.

ForFlipSakes · 11/09/2015 17:26

Oh god! I remember this so well....

Ds1: forgot that I'd handed him over to my mum in the middle of the night. Woke up frantic and shouting: "Where's the baby, where's the baby?!" Dh, in his sleep deprived state, said: "What baby?" Grin

Ds2: I put ear drops in his nose in the dark. Sobbed down the phone at an A&E Dr who told me he'd be fine. (though it will burn a bit...)

Shodan · 11/09/2015 17:00

Another one here who has also forgotten to strap the car seat in.

I left the car windows wide open the night that there was torrential rain.

And I think I dropped two week old ds2 down the side of the bed one night- I didn't get out of bed to haul him from the Moses basket for his feed as usual. For some reason my sleep-deprived brain thought I could manage perfectly well by just leaning precariously out of bed to do it. I actually don't know if I really did drop him, or if that was just a bad dream. I choose to believe the latter Grin

And burnt my stomach on the iron, trying to iron a (non-baby-sick-covered) top. That was quite sore.

DSIS twice left her purse on the roof of the car after strapping the car seat in. One she lost, the other she retrieved after a kindly passer-by made frantic arm motions to tell her...

MrsMarigold · 11/09/2015 16:34

I was co-sleeping with DS (aged 4 years) recently and he wee'd on me, I was so tired I just carried on sleeping covered in wee in wet PJs and a wet bed.

I also walked out of M&S with a load of groceries I hadn't paid for on the back of the pram.

When DS was very little I told DH to take him back to the hospital and give him back.

HappyBeet86 · 11/09/2015 16:00

(wince)

I've just done something.

Currently 7 weeks pregnant and popped round Asda with dd 2. and dp.

At the checkout I spotted a tiny bag of dried apricots and decided I fancied them. Our stuff was a way up the conveyor belt so I gently tossed them on.

Or at least that is what I meant to do.

I watched in horror as they flew slo-mo and much further than I intended to throw them. They hit the checkout woman on the arm.

I spent the entire time left in the queue and checkout apologising profusely while she shot me daggers.

My face is still red!

CigarsofthePharoahs · 11/09/2015 15:51

I've just remembered one more...
Had the weirdest dream. I was in an interrment camp in the far East, ww2 era. I was being tortured with a cigarette lighter.
Woke up in my baking hot room in hospital having drifted off whilst feeding 2 day old ds2. He'd slipped a bit, hence the pain.
I'd pretty much had no sleep since admission to hospital, four days earlier. Thank goodness I had the sides of the bed up!

Sighing · 11/09/2015 07:39

I left the sleeping child in the pushchsir in the back garden (I'd been mowing the lawn). Went to make a cup of tea, realised we'd no milk and headed to the shop. I got to the bottom of the hill then realised what was missing. Ran home, just couldn't be bothered with a drink nor a walk to the shop after that.

anotherbusymum14 · 10/09/2015 21:24

Lol this is a really funny thread.
Yes I accidentally put baby car seat in car without strapping it in. This feels shocking let's be honest. So dangerous but it happens.
Bensmissus: I totally hear you. I've done that too. So sleep deprived that I picked up my six month old in the dark and held her upside down and wondered why she began to howl!! Oh my I felt sooo bad. Took the worstmotheraward.
Oh and I put the break on my child's push chair and ran inside to get her water (she was in push chair on the front porch). Push chair brakes failed and it moved forward down the stairs and flipped completely over (first child this was). I felt terrible. Cried for days :(

cakesonatrain · 10/09/2015 19:53

Very very briefly nodded off while driving home from work and woke due to swerving against kerb at about 60mph when pregnant with dc2
