AIBU re this odd request from neighbours?

Our NDN's came over to tell us that they are having some work done in their back garden starting tomorrow- having a fence built, some trees cut down, rubbish cleared etc. They estimate it will be about two full days work, possibly more. They then told us that they were going away and would not be back until after the job has finished. They explained that they don't want to leave the workmen a key for "security reasons" so this means they will have no power source to plug tools in, no access to a bathroom or kettle etc. so would we be in and if so would we mind 'helping out' with those things.

I explained that DH will be at work and while I am actually off work for the next couple of days, I will have various errands, things to do, want to take DC out etc. so will be in and out of the house. They then asked when I was planning on going out so they could let their workmen know and saying "oh don't worry, they'll work around you". I told them that I hadn't made firm plans and didn't know when I would be going out. To be honest I don't really want to be tied to a schedule and I also don't like the idea of three strange men traipsing around my house for two days. I told them that I was sorry but they needed to either provide them with a key or arrange for the work to be done at a time when they would be home as we couldn't be on hand for two days to provide cups of tea, electricity and access to bathroom facilities etc.

Although they were polite, I got the distinct feeling that NDN's thought I was being mean and not very neighbourly.

AIBU or is it a bit much to expect me to accommodate all this? Initially I thought they were being cheeky (they don't want to leave these men a key but I should just open my house up to them!) and that it was a bit of a strange request but due to their reaction (they seemed quite surprised that I said no) I'm now doubting myself. They are generally quite annoying neighbours, nothing too awful just a bit noisy and inconsiderate at times, so I don't trust myself to be objective!

Am desperate for the next instalment of the weeping bicycle monkeys circus saga Grin

I wonder if the lack of leccie has put them off from returning today. And as much as your NDNs are brass-necked and left the builders in the lurch, they are also rather cheeky by knocking on doors further down the road. What the fuck did they expect?

Jo4040 · 04/08/2015 12:06

Goodness me!! Has the work started yet?

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 04/08/2015 11:58

So they won't let the builders in their own home because they don't trust them but they wanted their other neighbour, an"elderly woman on her own," to have these apparently untrustworthy men traipsing through her house?

It's bad enough that they asked you but that just adds an extra level of thoughtlessness and selfishness.

mrsg1888 · 04/08/2015 11:51

Grin Some hilarious posts so far, but over all I can't understand how people can be so brazen!! My NDNs would never dare intrude like that

RandomFriend · 04/08/2015 11:14

Doesn't look like they've done much to be honest, despite the racket they were making. That can happen when there is noone to supervise. NDN is being ridiculous to not be around when paying for building work.

Skiptonlass · 04/08/2015 11:14

Bizarre... and could have been so easily dealt with by them

Check with you first re plans and plants
Leave YOU a key to THEIR house
Ask you nicely to lock up of an evening or just get the builders to give you the key overnight
Bring you back a nice bottle of wine or a gift from the trip...

Place marking to see how this pans out. :)

steppedonlego · 04/08/2015 11:13

Cant believe the cheek!

also placemarking

Loving the image of monkeys on bicycles, and all that weeping in the bushes.
Definitely YANBU and am so glad all the other neighbours refused this 'request'.
Cheeky doesn't even begin to describe your neighbours. We had ones who always took themselves off on a break, without a word, when getting extremely noisy, dirty work done, on their house. Leaving everyone else on the street to endure it, and they all but rebuilt the bloody house, so there was a lot of work. Not to mention weeks on end of vans parked everywhere, skips and all the rest.

But, woe betide anyone else getting a small bit of work done, she would be out like a demon, complaining about it. B1tch. We should have had a street party when they left! Complete with cycling monkeys. Grin

TheReluctantCountess · 04/08/2015 11:03

Have the builders come back today?

Ohfourfoxache · 04/08/2015 10:43

I'm just gobsmacked at the brass neck of the ndn Shock

Who does that?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/08/2015 09:51

Getting the serious stuff over and done with first - yorksha - you were definitely NOT being unreasonable to refuse this cheeky request. But so many thank-yous for starting this thread, without which we would never have had the weeping circus monkeys on bicycles!!

Regarding the plants - I would say to them that, if the plants cannot stay where they are, they must dig them up and replant them - you are not willing to have them sacrificed for your cheeky-fucker neighbours' fence!

Bambambini - you must never, EVER proof read your posts - your autocorrects made me howl with laughter!

Pastaeater · 04/08/2015 09:40

Just loving this thread - crying with laughter yesterday! Keep us updated OP! Smile

Nearly woke the dc's up howling at weeping monkeys on bicycles!!!!! Very funny Grin

Shameless place mark.????

CheerfulYank · 04/08/2015 04:52

I love a good cheeky neighbor thread. :o

Of course YANBU!

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 04/08/2015 04:29

Can't help but wonder if (as I am presuming it's going to be a new fence) it's going to have a gate in it. So your lovely NDNs can just pop over any time they like ... Shock Shock Shock Grin

Then you just put something big & heavy in front of it (if it opens into your garden then, you just alter it, so it swings open into their garden) Wink

NoArmaniNoPunani · 04/08/2015 03:58

I wonder if they'll be back tomorrow
