AIBU re this odd request from neighbours?

Our NDN's came over to tell us that they are having some work done in their back garden starting tomorrow- having a fence built, some trees cut down, rubbish cleared etc. They estimate it will be about two full days work, possibly more. They then told us that they were going away and would not be back until after the job has finished. They explained that they don't want to leave the workmen a key for "security reasons" so this means they will have no power source to plug tools in, no access to a bathroom or kettle etc. so would we be in and if so would we mind 'helping out' with those things.

I explained that DH will be at work and while I am actually off work for the next couple of days, I will have various errands, things to do, want to take DC out etc. so will be in and out of the house. They then asked when I was planning on going out so they could let their workmen know and saying "oh don't worry, they'll work around you". I told them that I hadn't made firm plans and didn't know when I would be going out. To be honest I don't really want to be tied to a schedule and I also don't like the idea of three strange men traipsing around my house for two days. I told them that I was sorry but they needed to either provide them with a key or arrange for the work to be done at a time when they would be home as we couldn't be on hand for two days to provide cups of tea, electricity and access to bathroom facilities etc.

Although they were polite, I got the distinct feeling that NDN's thought I was being mean and not very neighbourly.

AIBU or is it a bit much to expect me to accommodate all this? Initially I thought they were being cheeky (they don't want to leave these men a key but I should just open my house up to them!) and that it was a bit of a strange request but due to their reaction (they seemed quite surprised that I said no) I'm now doubting myself. They are generally quite annoying neighbours, nothing too awful just a bit noisy and inconsiderate at times, so I don't trust myself to be objective!

Well, if they do put a skip on your drive you can use it for a good free clear out. As can all your friends!

wowfudge · 03/08/2015 08:16

Are the builders there yet?

lighteningirl · 03/08/2015 08:08

Blackmailing and laughing does Bambini have a kindle ? Mine changed lovely weightl loss to lovely white arse last week Grin

redshoeblueshoe · 03/08/2015 08:08

Make sure they don't put the skip in your way.
WEEPING I knew someone would name change Grin

eddielizzard · 03/08/2015 08:03

piss takers. so not on, especially the 'surprised' reaction at your unreasonableness.

yorkshapudding · 03/08/2015 07:58

You lot crack me up Grin

To answer some of your questions

No, they are not elderly. I think they're younger than us actually.

They haven't made any bonkers requests before. They can be generally inconsiderate at times - they have a noisy dog, a penchant for doing DIY in evenings and early on the weekend, that sort of thing- nothing too terrible, just annoying. We don't have much to do with each other really.

Haven't spoken to the other neighbours (lovely, we get on really well) but I'm pretty sure they would say no! Other neighbour likes a gossip so I'm sure she'll let me know!

All quiet so far, no discernible weeping sounds coming from the bushes. Going to take DC to the park and then out for brekkie. Hoping the builders will have been and gone by the time we come back or, if NDN's have any sense, have been cancelled altogether.

God this thread is funny. Please please update us later.

BuyMeAPony · 03/08/2015 07:12

My phone's not updating properly. There were only about 6 posts showing when I typed that suggestion. Things have obviously moved on somewhat.

BuyMeAPony · 03/08/2015 03:30

Perhaps you could offer to keep their key and the workmen could let themselves into their house for bathroom etc. Only getting if from you when you're home.

I share the general outrage. Was just wondering if this was an olive branch.

AmIbeingTreasonable · 03/08/2015 02:40

NO WEEPING BICYCLE MONKEYS HERE

This has made me weep Grin

can't wait for the update

Mermaidhair · 03/08/2015 01:01

Yanbu, basically they don't want to deal with the whole issue so they have decided to go away for 2 days while the work is being done. But they expect you to be their building foreman! That is one of the cheekiest requests I have ever heard..

WanderWomble · 03/08/2015 00:37

Help them but 'borrow' half of their garden for your trouble. ;)

mimishimmi · 03/08/2015 00:12

I don't think the builders will expect anything. It would be equally unreasonable of the neighbours to expect she'll hang around with a key all day. Some of those tools use a lot of power - can't believe they asked the OP to provide the electricity.

Are they elderly OP? Have they ever made similarly unreasonable requests?

thenumberseven · 02/08/2015 23:52

Shock Shock at the cheek of your neighbours.
Please stay in tomorrow and fill us in on what the builders expect.

annatha · 02/08/2015 23:51

Nothing constructive to add but laughing so much at the weeping bicycle monkeys and placemarking in anticipation for tomorrow...

Goldbluemagenta · 02/08/2015 23:40

I think I would have actually laughed in their faces at their sheer audacity

saintlyjimjams · 02/08/2015 23:38

That's a whole new level of piss taking. What on earth goes through peoples heads?

AlisonBlunderland · 02/08/2015 23:35

Lie. Say you will be put both days

BathshebaDarkstone · 02/08/2015 23:27

YADDDNBU. My face would look like this: Shock

Ruhrpott · 02/08/2015 23:25

I'm having some big ugly for trees cut down this week and I won't be in. Difference is I told them when I booked that I wouldn't be as they didn't want to give me a definite date and time when they'll be here. They wanted to be able to fit it in when it suited them. They are going to bring petrol chain saws to cut down the trees so don't need electric. If they want a wee, then we have plenty of bushes and if they want a drink they'll have to bring their own.

I didn't ask the neighbours to look after them, though knowing my elderly neighbour she'll be bringing out tea and cake and chatting to them (she knows the tree surgeon as he brings her wood for her log burner and she gave me his number and she wants the trees cut down as they are blocking light to her garden)

YANBU I would have said no too.

alltoomuchrightnow · 02/08/2015 23:17

nuts and am sure even the workman will find it nuts, even if it's convenient for them

OrangeFluff · 02/08/2015 22:52

Your neighbours sound bizarre! Please be in tomorrow morning so that you can update us!
