AIBU re this odd request from neighbours?

Our NDN's came over to tell us that they are having some work done in their back garden starting tomorrow- having a fence built, some trees cut down, rubbish cleared etc. They estimate it will be about two full days work, possibly more. They then told us that they were going away and would not be back until after the job has finished. They explained that they don't want to leave the workmen a key for "security reasons" so this means they will have no power source to plug tools in, no access to a bathroom or kettle etc. so would we be in and if so would we mind 'helping out' with those things.

I explained that DH will be at work and while I am actually off work for the next couple of days, I will have various errands, things to do, want to take DC out etc. so will be in and out of the house. They then asked when I was planning on going out so they could let their workmen know and saying "oh don't worry, they'll work around you". I told them that I hadn't made firm plans and didn't know when I would be going out. To be honest I don't really want to be tied to a schedule and I also don't like the idea of three strange men traipsing around my house for two days. I told them that I was sorry but they needed to either provide them with a key or arrange for the work to be done at a time when they would be home as we couldn't be on hand for two days to provide cups of tea, electricity and access to bathroom facilities etc.

Although they were polite, I got the distinct feeling that NDN's thought I was being mean and not very neighbourly.

AIBU or is it a bit much to expect me to accommodate all this? Initially I thought they were being cheeky (they don't want to leave these men a key but I should just open my house up to them!) and that it was a bit of a strange request but due to their reaction (they seemed quite surprised that I said no) I'm now doubting myself. They are generally quite annoying neighbours, nothing too awful just a bit noisy and inconsiderate at times, so I don't trust myself to be objective!

So when did they finish OP?

PHANTOMnamechanger · 03/08/2015 19:39

shameless placemarking

OPs NDNs are SO rude and entitled!!

HeyDuggee · 03/08/2015 19:22

Check out your council OP, as it differs. Our old borough had no such restrictions for private (single) works, only for multiple dwellings (aimed at professional developers).

achieve6 · 03/08/2015 19:19

Ask them to go

they must be pissed off with your neighbours too, having to manage in such an ad hoc way. I hope they charge them extra!

SilverBirchWithout · 03/08/2015 19:13

I would politely ask them how much longer they will be as your DD needs to go to bed, if they say a few minutes probably just leave it. If any longer politely mention that as this is a residential area, the noise should have stopped at 6pm.

ShebaShimmyShake · 03/08/2015 19:12

I don't think it's unreasonable of them to ask (much as my neighbours and I ask each other to feed each other's cats when one of us is away for the weekend), in case you might be in and not mind. But a)they should give you far more notice and b)as soon as they hear, "it's not really convenient", they should drop it.

yorkshapudding · 03/08/2015 19:10

SilverBirch, I didn't know that. So would it be really petty of me to point this out to them if it carries on for much longer?

www.ukcontractors.net/builders-uk-is-there-a-set-time-builders-are-allowed-to-work-in-a-residential-area/

They can only work from 8am to 6pm, Mon to Fri!!

yorkshapudding · 03/08/2015 18:54

They're still here! They must have decided they could manage without power I suppose. Now worried that because they didn't start until after 10 this morning the hammering and banging will be continuing well into the evening. Really hope not as DD's bedroom is at the back of the house. I couldn't get her to have a nap today because of all the noise and she turns into a proper diva if she doesn't get her sleep.

Well the neighbours (the ones having the work done) should have let the builders know that everyone had said no to the electric - it must be difficult for them to work but it is a completely avoidable situation!

Agree with what a pp said about rechargeable tools, I know a builder who has them (probably for this reason ...)

I would trim the plants back - are they digging up the fenceposts to put more in?

acatcalledjohn · 03/08/2015 18:42

Ooh, a thread that just keeps on giving!

JammyGem · 03/08/2015 18:36

So did they just carry on without power?

Your NDN are taking the piss, am glad to hear all your other neighbours said no too!

rollonthesummer · 03/08/2015 18:36

I'm amazed-what a bloody cheek! Have they finished or will they be back tomorrow?

Muddlewitch · 03/08/2015 18:35

They must have a very long extension lead!

chippednailvarnish · 03/08/2015 18:27

I think you have an opportunity to make some money.
£2 a pee
£4.50 for a crap
£10 for 30 mins of electricity
£1 for a cup of tea

It could be a winner!

HermioneWeasley · 03/08/2015 18:24

I can't wait to hear how cheeky/entitled NDNs react to this!

The5DayChicken · 03/08/2015 17:51

Wonder which of you the neighbours are going to blame for the work not being done?

yorkshapudding · 03/08/2015 17:44

Just found out that after I and other neighbour said no the builders went to the next door but one neighbour to ask to "borrow a power source"! How far down the street were they planning to go? Confused

Next door but one neighbour also said no by the way. His exact response was "I don't even know their names, why would I pay for you to do work on their house?" Can't argue with his logic really.

Shameless place marking to find out what happens when they get back.

lessthanBeau · 03/08/2015 16:55

omg, only got to the weeping bushes and bicycles, am genuinely howling with laughing with tears streaming, thank you bambam, that has totally made my day, I've haven't laughed like that for ages, the next post asking why you gave them bicycles was the icing on the cake. Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin
and op yadnbu.

yorkshapudding · 03/08/2015 14:51

Reluctant, I'm going to try very hard not to turn it into one as I really can't be arsed with that sort of thing. Will be telling them firmly but politely that I think they've handled this whole thing badly and we would appreciate a bit of consideration in future but i'm not about to go to war with them over it. Life's too short.

I hope this isn't the start of a big unfriendly situation.

Pushing back against entitled behaviour like this is exactly the right thing to do, though, otherwise who knows what the bastards might demand next!

I don't understand why they don't use rechargeable tools.
