AIBU re this odd request from neighbours?

Our NDN's came over to tell us that they are having some work done in their back garden starting tomorrow- having a fence built, some trees cut down, rubbish cleared etc. They estimate it will be about two full days work, possibly more. They then told us that they were going away and would not be back until after the job has finished. They explained that they don't want to leave the workmen a key for "security reasons" so this means they will have no power source to plug tools in, no access to a bathroom or kettle etc. so would we be in and if so would we mind 'helping out' with those things.

I explained that DH will be at work and while I am actually off work for the next couple of days, I will have various errands, things to do, want to take DC out etc. so will be in and out of the house. They then asked when I was planning on going out so they could let their workmen know and saying "oh don't worry, they'll work around you". I told them that I hadn't made firm plans and didn't know when I would be going out. To be honest I don't really want to be tied to a schedule and I also don't like the idea of three strange men traipsing around my house for two days. I told them that I was sorry but they needed to either provide them with a key or arrange for the work to be done at a time when they would be home as we couldn't be on hand for two days to provide cups of tea, electricity and access to bathroom facilities etc.

Although they were polite, I got the distinct feeling that NDN's thought I was being mean and not very neighbourly.

AIBU or is it a bit much to expect me to accommodate all this? Initially I thought they were being cheeky (they don't want to leave these men a key but I should just open my house up to them!) and that it was a bit of a strange request but due to their reaction (they seemed quite surprised that I said no) I'm now doubting myself. They are generally quite annoying neighbours, nothing too awful just a bit noisy and inconsiderate at times, so I don't trust myself to be objective!

"You'll have to hope the new owner is a mumsnetter so she can update you all"

You mean you didn't check, yorksha?? Shock

Good luck with the move.

yorkshapudding · 12/08/2015 22:25

Fortunately prettybird all the questionnaire stuff was done and dusted long before weeping bicycle monkeys entered my life Grin Just waiting to exchange now.

Howtorebuild, what was quick? Do you mean us moving? I wish, the whole process has actually been dragging on for ages as our buyers are a bit of a nightmare and have caused a lot of unnecessary delays..come to think of it, they'll probably get on with NDN's like a house on fire Grin

That was quick.

prettybird · 12/08/2015 20:05

Have you completed your questionnaire yet - the one that usually includes questions about whether there have been any issues with neighbours?

What do you think the new owners will think if you refer to "Mumsnet Classics" - let alone "Flying Bicycle Monkeys"?! Grin

yorkshapudding · 12/08/2015 19:54

Oh my God, I've only just realised this thread had been put in classics! I'm strangely proud Grin

Not much to report on the NDN fuckwittery front I'm afraid. They haven't mentioned anything about the fence etc. I think they're embarrassed. They have got another fecking dog though Hmm It's only a wee puppy and they leave it to cry for hours. DH went round and complained because it kept us up til about 3am and they said they were 'sleep training' it so it will eventually learn to soothe itself. So that'll be fun!

The good news is we're moving soon though (just waiting for all the paperwork to go through) so their builders, fences, dogs, weeping bicycle monkeys etc will be someone else's problem Grin

You'll have to hope the new owner is a mumsnetter so she can update you all Wink

I am usually a lurker, but I have stayed up until 1am to get to the end of this thread. Totally Going to die of sleep deprivation worth it Grin

Thanks to MNHQ for putting this thread in classics. I just have to think about WEEPING BICYCLE MONKEYS and I laugh out loud. Mind you, my NDN were going out for the afternoon yesterday ...... on their bicycles! I didn't know how to explain that I really wasn't laughing at them Blush

Whilst waiting for updates from the OP, I searched for the Elderly Korean Lady thread.

Here it is: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnet_classics/a2154580-There-is-a-tiny-elderly-Korean-lady-in-my-garden-and-I-want-to-go-out#prettyPhoto

Enjoy!

CrispyCrispBag · 07/08/2015 13:37

Keep up MaryBerry Grin It wasn't the OP, but another poster - Bambambini I think - who gave her builders monkeys bicycles with their Brew while they were busy weeping in the bushes, thereby forever coining my new favourite expletive, WEEPING BICYCLE MONKEYS!

Rab19 · 07/08/2015 12:54

I have to say, this is one of the best threads ever!!! I rarely post, just lurk, but this has MADE me want to tell Yorksha what a legend she it lol.

I wanna know what the NDN's have said since their return & fencegate!

Rab x

RandomFriend · 07/08/2015 09:43

apparently they were supposed to do some other stuff that they haven't done

The builders were too busy having lie-ins and sunbathing to get on with the extra work. That is what happens when there is no supervisor. It was ridiculous of NDNs to leave the house when builders are there.

LovelyFriend · 07/08/2015 09:24

Totally taking the piss. It's not my water or electricity is be bothered about. You are being asked to project manage their improvements. I wouldn't want other people's workers in my house. And as for being tied to the house all day unable to pop our ets, fuck the fuck off.

Who arranges for work to be done and goes away if they aren't prepared for the builders to have a key. Beyond weird!

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 06/08/2015 22:42

China? Confused

MaryBerrysEyelashes · 06/08/2015 21:57

did we find out WHY the op gave them bikes?

Are we in the Uk or China?

WhatchaMaCalllit · 06/08/2015 21:51

Aw, I was hoping there had been an update from the OP on this....that the NDN had been around and was again unreasonable and demanding a response as to why the OP hadn't let their builders use the OP's electricity, water and such like....

Please come back OP and let us know if anything new has happened between you (completely reasonable person) and your delightful if deluded NDN.

MrsHathaway · 06/08/2015 21:01

Love it, Pedestriana !!

Pedestriana · 06/08/2015 20:57

One of these?

AIBU re this odd request from neighbours?
VulcanWoman · 06/08/2015 20:49

Cheerful, fence posts can go on what ever side you want. My neighbour is putting a new fence up and my side will have the post and her side will be neater with all the panels flush but when I had the other side done I had the posts and horizontal posts my side due to the kids next door and climbing! I think I remember you saying you're American, so different fence types but maybe I've got the wrong end of the stick with your post, apologies if I have.

CheerfulYank · 06/08/2015 19:12

Of course posts go on the inside! Shock What a twonk.

Pedestriana · 06/08/2015 18:23

Monkey brown? That'd be a nice shade for a fence.

MrsHathaway · 06/08/2015 18:08

What colour are you going to paint your side of the fence, OP?

[innocent]

redshoeblueshoe · 06/08/2015 17:52

Rebecca Wine

prettybird · 06/08/2015 17:08

I reported the thread: said it had everything - Next Door Neighbour Dramas and Weeping Bicycle Monkeys, so what more did it need to go into Classics?! Grin

I've had a reply saying they're going to pop it over.

BeccaMumsnet · 06/08/2015 17:08

Hello everyone - we'll pop this over to Classics now Grin

CrispyCrispBag · 06/08/2015 12:55

DonkeyOaty and don't forget bedding said weeping bicycle monkeys on the fence Grin

londonrach I saw that you'd made a Classics nomination but I think the more the better, no? Come on MN Powers-that-be, this needs to be preserved for posterity!

Incidentally, I've been tasked with organising costumes for the Flying Monkeys in a production of the Wizard of Oz (yes, really) and the director looked at me strangely this morning when I insisted that they need bicycles!
