Just been outside the feed the cat who has his food in the outhouse. There, hanging from the old pipework are 3 absolutely huge cocoons. They are hideous! Black and more than 4 inches long. They weren't there yesterday. What the hell is going to come out? AIBU to be very worried?

BMW6

Eurgh. Sounds like he squished a spider's egg sac. It's awful. Been there, done something similar, never want to repeat it.

Gruntfuttock · 14/05/2015 13:42

Look at this thing! Plasmodial Slime Mold Sporangia

bilbodog · 14/05/2015 13:29

waiting with baited breath and suitcase packed.........................

MonstersBalls · 14/05/2015 13:29

After extensive research thanks to Balamory I have found this page which has a very similar picture and calls it Black Mold.

2boys2girls · 14/05/2015 13:29

Loved the jokey wind ups though

2boys2girls · 14/05/2015 13:28

Did anyone actually believe it was not fungi ? The jokey wind ups though ;-)

Moln · 14/05/2015 13:27

Just read that

"Slime molds were once considered fungi, but unlike fungi, they can move, and their cell membranes are made of different stuff."

All righty then.

Pispcina · 14/05/2015 13:26

No I really doubt it's any sort of moth. It's more the size of a bat.

littlehouseinthebigwoods · 14/05/2015 13:24

How is it possible to be simultaneously so amused yet so horrified! You are all brilliant.

Still itching though...

BigRedBall · 14/05/2015 13:24

Yes it's true. We were learning about how fungus can be found anywhere with the right conditions and I distinctly remember this particular picture of a baby mushroom growing on a lung. I'll try to find a pic.

My chest is hurting when I breathe now. It's like there's spores going inside me. Confused.

Moreisnnogedag · 14/05/2015 13:21

Yes but what type of fungus?! Google images no joy. Is it dangerous or just rank? Come on NHM you can't leave us hanging!!

BuzzardBird · 14/05/2015 13:16

Now you have its smell on you it will think you are it's child and will try to feed you in the night...

Off to check shed...in the country...in the Midlands :/

MrsPeterQuill · 14/05/2015 13:15

Fucking hell bigredball is that true?!!

I daren't google it as I have an irrational fear of mushrooms and fungus although looking at the OP's pics, it may not be that irrational after all...

grapejuicerocks · 14/05/2015 13:15

NHM called it a fruiting body, sporangia

Dafspunk · 14/05/2015 13:15

Do Lakeland do flamethrowers?

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 14/05/2015 13:15

BMW6, phew, Southampton is suitably far away from Scotland.

bendybrickpumpkinpatch · 14/05/2015 13:13

So if its a fungus smash it off the wall ?

TheHumblePotato · 14/05/2015 13:12

I agree that the only reasonable and sensible option is to burn down your house. wtf is it?

bendybrickpumpkinpatch · 14/05/2015 13:12

BigRedBall that's freaked me out !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In a LUNG Aghhhhhhhh !

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 14/05/2015 13:11

If course it's a fungus. Those posting cocoon pics saying it's that should look at the pics they are posting. A cocoon is not ridged all the way up,it smooths out where the wings are, which is a clearly defined pattern! This thing is ridged all the way, covered I powdery stuff and has no visible wing place thingy

TwartFaceBeetj · 14/05/2015 13:07

Oh what did NHM call it? I can't find the post.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 14/05/2015 13:05
grapejuicerocks · 14/05/2015 13:04

I've just google imaged what the NHM called it, and it certainly doesn't look like any images on there.

TwartFaceBeetj · 14/05/2015 13:00

Oh my giddy aunt! Look at the size of it next to your hand Shock

Fuck the moth theory, definite evacuation of the Midlands is needed.

Stratter5 · 14/05/2015 12:59

Can of petrol and a match. Job done.
