Just been outside the feed the cat who has his food in the outhouse. There, hanging from the old pipework are 3 absolutely huge cocoons. They are hideous! Black and more than 4 inches long. They weren't there yesterday. What the hell is going to come out? AIBU to be very worried?

Please where a mask when around it as black mold spores can cause health problems and even death. If it is mold.

Widowcyril · 14/05/2015 14:22

Not that your house is dirty, op. But these two can work miracles with some bicarb of soda and a bottle of flat cola...

Widowcyril · 14/05/2015 14:21

I can't just stand by and watch, it's time to call in the specialists. Does anyone have these two on speed-dial?

Mij · 14/05/2015 14:18

All the stuff about mould/fungus doesn't suggest it could grow overnight though as the OP stated. And that pic of black mould is just the usual stuff you'd get in a damp house - just an awful lot of it on a flat wall, not a big solid lump like this.

Genuinely fascinated!

GloGirl · 14/05/2015 14:16

Flick... it... off... with.... a.... SPOON?

Are you out of your Goddamn mind pivot?!!!! Shock

GlomOfNit · 14/05/2015 14:11

Definitely wot Worra said. Like a huge turd with a black beard. Grin

Please don't poke them, they're obviously moth cocoons of some species or other and they'll hatch out harmlessly.

leolo · 14/05/2015 14:08

Hubbie (surveyor) says it looks like King Alfred's Cakes - a fungus.

honeyandfizz · 14/05/2015 14:07

Oh god I'm in the Midlands too. Op EXACTLY where are you?! Shock

Have you seen Alien? Looks like the pods that the facehuggers spring from.. Sorry. Your demise is inevitable.

hiddenhome · 14/05/2015 14:00

How does she get rid of them?

Without succumbing to its evil, mouldy power Confused

SoupDragon · 14/05/2015 13:59

Has the op been seen since she posted about touching the er ... Thing?

No, but the Thing is now about 5ft 6 long.

007hel · 14/05/2015 13:59

Stratter5 · 14/05/2015 13:57

King Alfred had the right idea then. Burn the fucker, kill it with fire.

Oreocrumbs · 14/05/2015 13:55

LittleTalia · 14/05/2015 13:53

Hey OP! I can help you out, these are almost certainly DALDINIA CONCENTRICA. The common names are King Alfred’s cakes, Coal fungus and Cramp balls, they can be found growing on dead or dying wood. It's not uncommon to see it like this before they turn more ball shaped.

MysticMugBug · 14/05/2015 13:52

KILL IT WITH FIRE.... can you set it alight?

frankie80 · 14/05/2015 13:50

I hate all kinds of insects. What if its a stinging type insect, or a family of insects?

neepsandtatties · 14/05/2015 13:47

Exidia glandulosa or Daldinia concentrica ?

flora717 · 14/05/2015 13:43

Are those a line of engineering bricks? I am suddenly uneasy about where in the Midlands!

ScrumpyBetty · 14/05/2015 13:43

Those thread is fascinating horrifying

SoupDragon · 14/05/2015 13:43

Yes, but that web page is clearly a front for a Men In Black type operation.
