Just been outside the feed the cat who has his food in the outhouse. There, hanging from the old pipework are 3 absolutely huge cocoons. They are hideous! Black and more than 4 inches long. They weren't there yesterday. What the hell is going to come out? AIBU to be very worried?

I think lithiumfear has got it! It looks too dull to be a cocoon and the soil stuff looks like fungus growth..

KurriKurri · 14/05/2015 00:09

Op is in the Midlands Shock Quick take a photo of yourself standing next to the cocoons wearing a daily mail sad face

Moln · 14/05/2015 00:09

The Midlands?

Erm, where exactly

CountryMummy1 · 14/05/2015 00:09

The cocoon itself is 4 inches, maybe a touch bigger. I am in the UK I'm afraid so it's obviously something that lives here Shock. If it's fungus of some kind would it appear like that in 24 hours?? with soil around it??

Yup, looks like a moth thingy to me.
It is very big, though

I wouldn't leave the cat in there.
I have never heard of a moth that was so big it could hurt anyone. There could be lots in there.

hiddenhome · 14/05/2015 00:08

It looks untidy and messy. The moth pupae look round and clean.

2boys2girls · 14/05/2015 00:08

Its fungus

TamzinGrey · 14/05/2015 00:07

Calm down OP. Something really pretty is going to emerge from there I'm sure. Perhaps a miniature unicorn with tiny sparkly wings.

lithiumfear · 14/05/2015 00:07

Could it be Cramp Ball Fungus?

WhiffleSqueak · 14/05/2015 00:07

as I typed "huge black cocoon" into google images I was glad of safe search.

DrLego · 14/05/2015 00:06

toxic black mould creatures? don't breathe in

AtomicDog · 14/05/2015 00:06

Please tell me you're in Australia or somewhere tropical?

TheCunkOfPhilomena · 14/05/2015 00:06

Could it be that thing from Jeepers Creepers?

ToadsJustFellFromTheSky · 14/05/2015 00:04

OMG it looks huge! Shock

WorraLiberty · 14/05/2015 00:04

Have a look here. Some are like a hairy, black penis

KurriKurri · 14/05/2015 00:03

Try looking at big beetles - rhinocerous beetle, hercules beetle, people breed them in Uk - they aren;t native. Or I guess it could be a non native moth. Is it four inches including the sort of fluffy bit at the bottom? Event he largest UK native hawk moth does not have a four inch pupa.

Looks like a Leopard moth pupa to me.

The hairy looking bits give it away.

CountryMummy1 · 14/05/2015 00:02

I'm in Midlands, UK

TheCunkOfPhilomena · 14/05/2015 00:02

I reckon that what you have there is a classic infestation of some of these.

CountryMummy1 · 14/05/2015 00:01

The black stuff appears to be soil-like stuff I think...and that wasn't there yesterday either. DEAR GOD!!! WHAT THE HELL IS IT! [hyperventilates]
