Just been outside the feed the cat who has his food in the outhouse. There, hanging from the old pipework are 3 absolutely huge cocoons. They are hideous! Black and more than 4 inches long. They weren't there yesterday. What the hell is going to come out? AIBU to be very worried?

Get Ray Mears in. He'll probably make it into a nice risotto for you. Grin

Haggisfish · 14/05/2015 07:08

I'm going with the poo fungus, too. ??

EugenesAxe · 14/05/2015 07:07

I just want to say how much I appreciated hiddenhome's classic John Goodman quote when faced with a huge, sticky, pulsating blob of egg.

sebsmummy1 · 14/05/2015 07:03

Sod tweeting Chris Packham a photo, you need David Attenborough or maybe Bear Grylls for this one!!

Cakeboastname · 14/05/2015 06:56

Is it some kind of dry or wet rot fungus? I don't think its tinder fungus or similar as I'm sure that needs dead wood. Looks cool. Defo phone the local rag and get your pictures inthe paper before it unleashes armageddon!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 14/05/2015 06:49

If it appeared since yesterday then it's not fully dry yet? It might get more shiny as it hardens (if it is a hawk moth).

Fabulassie · 14/05/2015 05:45

Yeah, baby, but did it see you?

Grandshiredoubles · 14/05/2015 05:35

I saw something narsty in the wood shed

Sammy3 · 14/05/2015 02:07

As someone who grew up watching lots of giant insect monster movies, I'm leaving the Midlands now. Give me a head start before you trigger the swarm.

emotionsecho · 14/05/2015 01:00

Your weapon of choice for any further investigation is a flame thrower, I'm sure they are available from all good DIY Stores in the 'How to fight alien fungi' aisle. Grin

That thing is the stuff of nightmares.

hiddenhome · 14/05/2015 00:50

Grin emme

hiddenhome · 14/05/2015 00:50

Fungi can grow anywhere damp.

I had some between my toes.

emmelinelucas · 14/05/2015 00:48

I thought fungi grew in soil or on rotting wood.
Not pipes.
hidden - you really got me there Grin

'The ant is no longer able to control the muscles of the mandible and will remain fixed in place. This lockjaw trait is popularly known as the death grip, and is essential in the fungus's lifecycle.
The fungus then kills the ant, and continues to grow as its hyphae invade more soft tissues and structurally fortify the ant's exoskeleton.More mycelia then sprout out of the ant, and securely anchor it to the plant substrate while secreting antimicrobials to ward off competition. When the fungus is ready to reproduce, its fruiting bodies grow from the ant's head and rupture, releasing the spores. This process takes four to ten days.'

don't breathe in the spores!

butterflyballs · 14/05/2015 00:45

It's ok. I've phoned the RAF. They are going to bomb your house in the morning.
