Just been outside the feed the cat who has his food in the outhouse. There, hanging from the old pipework are 3 absolutely huge cocoons. They are hideous! Black and more than 4 inches long. They weren't there yesterday. What the hell is going to come out? AIBU to be very worried?

Place marking with a very long stick Grin

SoupDragon · 14/05/2015 12:08

Why would the NHM London be on USA time?

Uness they have relocated to the aforementioned safe site deep in a mountain on a different continent...

TheTravellingLemon · 14/05/2015 12:07

The NHM id forum is ace. I've just spent ages looking at all the weird bugs and spiders.

bendybrickpumpkinpatch · 14/05/2015 12:05

highlighta why would they have gone to bed the reply was from NHM_London ?

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 14/05/2015 12:04

Please call The Doctor so he can take them back to their home planet. Once they hatch and find out we have pringles and red velvet cake, we're doomed.

GloGirl · 14/05/2015 12:04

OMG YOU TOUCHED IT!

You need to see a priest

LetThereBeCupcakes · 14/05/2015 12:00

This is NOT a thread I want to be reading over my soup. Shock

If we can't nuke the Midlands, can we drop a massive dome over it, like Stephen King?

Either way, could somebody let me know as I have family in the Midlands and I'd like to say goodbye.

highlighta · 14/05/2015 12:00

You do realize that NHM ID team has gone to bed now seeing as we woke him/her up at 3am USA time to reply to this question.

He/she is probably, ah fuck 'em all, I'm off to bed, thought it would be something interesting but its just a fruiting body of a fungus ffs!!

Grin
Moln · 14/05/2015 11:59

Hiddenhome I shall not speak of its non dormant state.

posted from airport

wobblebobblehat · 14/05/2015 11:56

It looks like a fungus.

Can you ring the Council? Maybe speak to someone in environmental health? They're usually very knowledgeable and helpful.

hiddenhome · 14/05/2015 11:56

Dormant you say?

What happens when it wakes up?

Slime moulds are intelligent according to a documentary I once watched.

TheTravellingLemon · 14/05/2015 11:55

Grin soupdragon

NHM: it's fine, slime mold or something. Honest.

hiddenhome · 14/05/2015 11:55

G'wan, chip it off.

Wearing safety protective gear of course.

Moln · 14/05/2015 11:54

Just looked at a text book (not done that for years!) a slime mould can form a dormant structure called a sclerotium. Which has a hard coating.

somelikeitcold · 14/05/2015 11:53

Aaaaaarrrrgh! Can't stop clicking on this thread and looking at that 'thing'.
I must stop, I must stop, I must stop

ExitPursuedByABear · 14/05/2015 11:52

Will nobody think of the cat.

Allinson2014 · 14/05/2015 11:52

The Midlands you say Shock. off to check the shed...

SoupDragon · 14/05/2015 11:51

I bet the next tweet from the NHM is that they are packing up the museum and leaving the country to a special safe site deep in a mntain on a differs continent.

vindscreenviper · 14/05/2015 11:51

hiddenhome · 14/05/2015 11:49

Industrial strength bleach is what's needed Grin

Or a flamethrower.

hiddenhome · 14/05/2015 11:48

If it's discharging its spores, you'll end up with them all over the place. It obviously loves the outhouse environment.

CountryMummy1 · 14/05/2015 11:47

If they say it can be hard then I'm going to have a chip at it!!

OP posts:
Doggygirl · 14/05/2015 11:47

I think it must be a mould or a fungus - otherwise, it wouldn't have that 'bloom' of spores around it.

Either way, gross. can't believe you touched it - eek!

bendybrickpumpkinpatch · 14/05/2015 11:46

Someones tweeted them the question about rock hardness. No reply as yet ?

hiddenhome · 14/05/2015 11:45

Can you chip one off and see what's on the underside?
