ooooo I love that sketch undertone and that painting above is lovely. If I ever find myself in Washington I will be going to see that.

WowOoo · 08/03/2015 18:56

I love so many of the pictures you've all linked. I've shown my son some, but I'm meant to be reading him a story!

I used to have the Kandinsky circles one on my wall as a Uni student. Many happy moments were had underneath that large print Wink

I just can't think of a favourite. There are too many. But will think of one for later..

SmartiesMakeMeNaughty · 08/03/2015 18:50

I can't pick just one but anything by George Shaw.
His paintings really capture that childhood sense of growing up in suburbs and waiting for life to begin - the mix of boredom and possiblity.
There's something so poetic and beautiful yet sinister and melancholy about his work.

I'm jealous of her too, Jacques - but her work means she gets to travel a lot, so she fits in galleries and so on alongside.

loveableshoulder · 08/03/2015 18:48

Dutch art too - love vermeer.

JacquesHammer · 08/03/2015 18:43

EBearhug - I'm jealous of your friend, I'd love to see the original. I find it hard to look away from even when a reproduction

Having another go at the girl in the blue dress...

Turner's Harlech Castle

I have never been there, nor have any connection to the place, but I fell in love with it when I saw it in the Tate. Like so many, the reproduced image here does not do it justice.

It seemed to me the perfect representation of dreamy evening light, so beautiful you wanted to just walk into it. I could have looked at it for hours.

I also love The Starry Night and the Blue Rigi as I went there on honeymoon.

Love this thread.

I have so many favourites, I couldn't choose one.

Love a bit of Klee & have this in my study.

American Gothic by Grant Wood.

I was talking to a friend about this one recently, and she said seeing it in the gallery, it was really compelling, one of those ones where reproductions simply don't do it justice at all.

GallicIsCharlie · 08/03/2015 17:17

I really, really wanted to go to the RA's 2012 Hockney exhibition. I'm sure visitors must have felt they could walk straight into the scenes, both very familiar and strangely surreal at the same time.

Agreed about Classics, it's a wonderful thread!

JacquesHammer · 08/03/2015 17:08

I love The Princes in the Tower by Millais

Also, American Gothic by Grant Wood.

My favourite Lowry is Going to the Match.

I like Goya's Sleep of Reason too

Stillyummy · 08/03/2015 16:41

This is called the Arab tent and I love it. Not my usual stile at all.

The Doge Loredan by Bellini

Its in the National Gallery and I love it. He has the wisdom of ages in his face - the painting technique is sublime.

Hellelil and Hildebrand, The Meeting on the Turret Stairs

I love this one.

Though there others, this is the one that first comes to mind.

This is a lovely thread - it's a shame it's in Chat, and will disappear after 90 days. Anyone else think it should be nominated for Classics? It's certainly a thread that would stand the test of time... Smile

fairnotfit · 08/03/2015 16:11

I love Atkinson Grimshaw's paintings, and this is one of my favourites.

I also love the cartoons of Jean-Jacques Sempe and Ronald Searle. I think they both capture small boys wonderfully well.

The Four Elements by Joachim Beuckelaer - its actually four paintings, but one of the most impressive displays in the National Gallery

dreamingofblueskies · 08/03/2015 15:38

Mine are quite lowbrow compared to some on here, but I love them anyway.
Nighthawks by Edward Hopper, I just find it quite evocative.

Kohler's Pig by Michael Sowa, it just makes me smile.

That Sargent exhibition at the NPG is well worth every penny - there are some really great pieces there. But yes, exhibition-going can be an expensive business these days.

Undertone · 08/03/2015 11:17

Here's that sketch
