Such a fab thread. I have looked up all the pictures I didn't already know. I think it should be in classics too.

DopeyDawg · 08/03/2015 20:35

Aargh! Cant find it Blush

It is of a station or journey with lots of faces with wonderful expressions. Holman Hunt style and era. Anyone know???

Speaking of Holman Hunt - I fell in love with 'The Lady of Shallot' as a romantic 15 year old. I still love it.

'The Scapegoat' takes some beating for eeriness though.

DopeyDawg · 08/03/2015 20:30

BestisWest - I love that Rembrandt drawing too. I have a small copy framed.

Moln thank you for introducing me to the Hildegaard stairwell painting - beautiful! Such tenderness and protectiveness on his face.

I have a copy of The Girl with the Pearl Earring. H hates it so it's in the basement atm but I'm going to hang it up soon. I luffs it.

I think one of my favourites is a large Victorian work - I'm off to look it up as I cant remember the title...

I have loads, but the one that always makes my heart miss a beat, and uplifts me, is Jackson Pollock's 'Summertime' (9a). It's (very badly) exhibited in Tate Modern. I'd love it on the wall facing my bed, so I could wake up to it every day.

Billingsgatedoxy · 08/03/2015 20:28

Sorry Moln not Moin! I have never seen the the Meeting on the Turret Stairs before but it is kind of perfect, so full of emotion.

SmartiesMakeMeNaughty · 08/03/2015 20:25

spaceal that Baltic show was one of the best exhibitions I've seen. Creepy and moving and elegiac and gorgeous.
The Marlene Dumas show at Tate modern just now is excellent too.

BeyondRepair · 08/03/2015 20:23

moln just read about it, very moving, its in ireland on limited ticket release!

BeyondRepair · 08/03/2015 20:20

moln where is turret one

Billingsgatedoxy · 08/03/2015 20:16

Moin I know! the impact of it in real life is incredible! I didn't expect to be bowled over by it but I really was. I took the kids to see it a couple of years ago and had the same reaction again.

Moln · 08/03/2015 20:08

Billingsgatedoxy I always thought The Birth of Venus was ok. Then 15 years ago I was in Florence with work. It was really low season (so no long queues) I took a bit of time to go see "some paintings" Grin I audible gasped when I walked in to room with The birth of Venus.

It's just incredible in real life.

BuzzardBird · 08/03/2015 20:07

daisy if you like klimt, look up watersnakes :)

spaceal · 08/03/2015 20:02

EBear and Smarties I think George Shaw is great too. Saw his Turner prize exhibition in 2011 at Baltic in Gateshead. Was great and really resonated without memories of the various small towns I grew up in. I like the extraordinary ordinariness of his paintings.

FFTransform · 08/03/2015 20:00

van gogh almond tree in bloom

moroni the tailor - put him in a hoodie and the face would feel as alive or real as how he is in the painting

Billingsgatedoxy · 08/03/2015 19:57

The birth of Venus by Botticelli. I know it's probably over famous, but I saw it in the Uffizi in Florence and it is beautiful, very large and just lovely.

My favourite sculpture is Cupid and psyche in the Louvre. It's just so romantic, I saw it on honeymoon and will always love it.

Pasithea · 08/03/2015 19:48

Jockeys in the rain. Edgar Degas
Woman at bath. Edgar Degas
Whistle jacket. Stubbs
The kiss gust av Klimt
The wassail. Margaret mackintosh. I have a print above my Charles rennie mackintosh bed and bedroom furniture

daisyswirl · 08/03/2015 19:43

My favourite is The Kiss by Gustav Klimt. Absolutely beautiful..sorry i can't link a picture i'm a real luddite and my tech support guys (the kids) are not here!

TheFnozwhowasmirage · 08/03/2015 19:40

I love Munnings too and have a little print waiting to be framed. I bought this Cecil Aldin in December,I've always loved his work and the horse has an expression exactly like our pony. The pencil sketch was bought in an auction,I've no idea who did it,but I love it, it cost me £9.

It fabulous isn't it BeyondRepair. I just adore the emotion captured in it.

Another vote here to have this moved to classics Smile

BeyondRepair · 08/03/2015 19:25

I have seen some of these today! Saw The Turner Pale Horse, Ophelia, also love Lady and Ermine, and Ambassadors, Lady of Shallot and Guernica. Girl with Pearl Earing, all Emma Hart. Love carnation lily rose

SmartiesMakeMeNaughty · 08/03/2015 19:14

Yes - they are done in Humbrol model enamel which adds to the wonderful unheimlich quality of light.
It must be really hard to work with as it behaves really differently to other paint.
I love the confluence of skill and feeling quality in his work.

EBearhug · 08/03/2015 19:11

I love George Shaw - and he paints in enamel paints, which is quite unusual.
