For me i think it was mince and potatoes. The mince was from a tin ffs!! With tinned peas and carrots.

My mum used to make me eat this and i would gag and cry! Oh and fucking ready brek as i would get pneumonia if i didn't eat it - boak

Spam fritters with rice - just utterly vile.

We weren't well off but we had fantastic holidays camping in Europe. My DM skimped on the food front though - can't say I blame her as we were 7 in total. My very favourite, which I would still happily eat today, was M&S chunky chicken in a white sauce.

Unfortunately spam fritters won out around once or twice a week. I wanted to cry. In fact, just thinking about it makes me want to cry right now. Sad

BugEyedBeans · 30/05/2016 18:20

Oh no, what have i said? Tongue sandwiches was not code for something even more revolting!

hazeyjane · 30/05/2016 18:19

Liver
Kidneys
All manner of offal
Pork chops and apple sauce
Crystallised ginger

BugEyedBeans · 30/05/2016 18:17

I briefly went to Girl Guides and there was a game that involved running in turn from one end of the room to the other, eating a spoonful of cold Smash, then running back to your team. The team that finished their Smash first won. The combination of Smash, running, and peer pressure was just awful.

Then I had a summer job making sandwiches in a very prestigious and (at the time) men only club. They liked tongue sandwiches. The tongue came from catering tins, it was literally the whole cow's tongue curled round and round in the tin, in a kind of jelly. We used to make the sandwiches with a little sliced tongue hanging out like this ;oP

Every Saturday we has sausage and mash. The potatoes made me bolk
Ugh!!!

LittleHouseOnTheShelf · 22/05/2016 02:24

Sprouts boiled for half an hour.

WiddlinDiddlin · 22/05/2016 02:18

Jeez this thread has brought me out in a cold sweat..

Ice cream scoops of nasty-mash (too salty, lumpy, greyish)..

Dried up liver and horrid brownish tinned peas..

Battered fish - bright orange batter that was greasy and yet not crispy either, and .. well I think I have blanked out the memory of the fish but it must have been awful as I can't even smell fish now without gipping..

School dinners, all of the above - evil.

DM used to do spam egg and chips - the chips were nice, the egg would be snotty on top and the spam... uuuuuuugh. Flabby, jelly like texture with the gelatinous bits... BOAK..

The one that brings back the worst gippy memories though - packed lunch sandwhiches - mighty white bread, thickly spread with real butter (really thick as it was always cold in our house) and then half an inch of Dairylea (which also contains butter)... the combination was just too grim, even though it doesn't sound that bad!

Oh and dumplings... in anything.. underdone hefty lumps of lard and flour.. swimming in a nasty stew, grey lumps of meat in a watery gravy with globules of grease on the top and nasty mushy bits of carrot and celery.

The real surprise is that my food issues are not WORSE tbh.

notamummy10 · 21/05/2016 00:55

Corned beef hash with rice pudding for pudding, I've always had an issue with textures of food.

Instant mash, the only time I had that was at school with the ice cream scoop portion.

Spingirl52 · 21/05/2016 00:45

What is DM?

TubbyTabby · 27/02/2016 06:11

fried liver
scrambled egg
semolina
apple tart with cloves

NatashaRomanov · 10/11/2015 21:21

My Mum's pizza.
Particularly the one with tuna and banana. Vile. Took me years to realise that I did actually like pizza!

Beef casserole and dumplings. Hated every part of it, chewy beef and stodgy dumplings. Cooked properly, i'd love it now!

SheGotAllDaMoves · 10/11/2015 10:38

Liver.
Corned beef hash.
Finney haddock.

LocalEditorEssex · 10/11/2015 10:35

Lamb...
It was fatty, greasy, smelled awful and I had to eat all of it.
I have never cooked or eaten it since I moved out of my parents house.

exexpat · 10/11/2015 10:31

Another liver-hating now-vegetarian here Smile.

I don't think there is a single meal I grew up with that I would cook or eat now, though to be fair I think it was the school food which tipped me over the edge into vegetarianism, rather than my mother's cooking. Just the idea of rice pudding makes me feel sick.

Mundelfall · 10/11/2015 10:12

And another one for liver... I loved mashed potato with onions and gravy but it inevitably came with liver.
I turned vegetarian aged 3 and refused to eat meat. I was a stubborn child and got away with it. Still vegetarian 40 years later Smile

WitchWay · 10/11/2015 08:40

Bright yellow smoked haddock braised in milk with mash & peas - yuck

Mum's "curry" which was leftover chopped up roast meat in a sort of gravy with lots of yellow mild curry powder & sultanas. Really sweet & weird.

SparklyPenguin · 08/11/2015 08:39

Another vote for liver. Vile! Mom wouldn't let my brother or I leave the table until we'd cleared our plates so we'd wait until she'd gone out of the room then hide the offensive offal in her collection of Japanese teapots. It's probably still there now.

Sansoora · 07/11/2015 05:35

Mince n potatoes

Nations were built on Tatties and Mince! Smile

I even used to love the stuff in a tin, its was Grants Mince and Peas, and if I was off school sick my neighbour was allowed to give it to me as a treat - my mum was a very guilty working mum.

Baconyum · 07/11/2015 05:21

Not rtft (cos well 26 pages!)

Mince n potatoes (sacrilege not to like this in Scotland!)

But meat and fish (veggie now) and most meals from the 70's!

Sansoora · 07/11/2015 03:41

Ready Brek

Semolina

Tapioca

Custard

Tripe

Cod Liver oil and Malt Extract

pourmeanotherglass · 05/11/2015 21:39

Yellow fish (like it now), prunes (mum still likes them, I can't stand the things), sprouts (like them now), pea and ham soup (still dont like it).

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 05/11/2015 21:31

Liver and onion gravy. My dearly departed nsns speciality, and there was no question of prefrred taste back then In the medieval days. Grin. You just had to eat what was put in front of you, or do without.
Ironically its one of my favorite meals now.

watfordmummy · 20/08/2015 06:41

Beef olives - work of the devil I say!!

ChaircatMiaow · 20/08/2015 02:52

Slimy overcooked fish with white sauce with big chunks of onion. Boak

Wearyheadedlady · 20/08/2015 02:39

Most school dinners, but particularly liver.
