got news today that I cant share with anyone - not my husband, not my children, not my staff, not my team mates, not my parents, not my best friends - it will have significant impact stuff - I cant talk about it and its made me fairly miserable - awfully miserable - I am red eyed and in a bad mood

so .... give it to me ... you best Annie impression of the Sun Coming Out Tomorrow, Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, or some quote about there being a silver lining in every cloud

Go on, hit me with it, do you best, because today cant get much worse ... I think

"Barn's burned down. Now I can see the moon".

And my dad's one for financial worries:
"We never starved of a winter yet".

'just keep swimming, just keep swimming'

  • Dory from Finding Nemo

Wallis Simpson had numerous peices of jewellery given
to her by Edward, the one that really moved me when I read about it was a bracelet of two entwined animals (leopards?) inscribed 'hold tight'.

It's all you can do xx

One I use for myself is everyone's fed, no ones dead.

I love Sundays poems they are making me emotional. Remember that there is something in every day to be grateful for. In my life when catastrophes have happened and one door has closed, another has opened.

This too shall pass.

Redoubtable · 16/05/2014 10:36

I love SundaySimmons post....I was in tears reading.

OP I've come through some rough stuff over the last few years. I have a board of inspirational posts on Pinterest, for the times when my head (still) goes down- some of the ones above are on there.

I love the Ernest Hemingway one about being broken and that is where strength comes from.

But for me the most powerful practice is gratitude. I keep a daily journal now, where I write at least 3 things that I am grateful for each day- some days it's as small as the sunny breeze that dried the sheets; some days it's the joy of looking into my daughters faces as I cuddle them at night.

Gratitude in our darkest times is more than a matter of remembering our blessings so we can hold the hard stuff in a bigger perspective.
With understanding, we see that often it is the suffering itself that deepens us, maturing our perspective on life, making us more compassionate and wise than we would have been without it.

How many times have we been inspired by those who embody a wisdom that could only come from dealing with adversity? And how many valuable lessons have we ourselves learned because life has given us unwanted challenges? With a grateful heart, we’re not only willing to face our difficulties, we can realize while we’re going through them that they are a part of our ripening into wisdom and nobility. - James Baraz

The Buddhist teachings are fabulous at simply working with what’s happening as your path of awakening, rather than treating your life experiences as some kind of deviation from what is supposed to be happening.

The more difficulties you have, in fact, the greater opportunity there is to let them transform you. The difficult things provoke all your irritations and bring your habitual patterns to the surface. And that becomes the moment of truth.

You have the choice to launch into the lousy habitual patterns you already have, or to stay with the rawness and discomfort of the situation and let it transform you, on the spot. - Pema Chodron

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life.
It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity. It turns problems into gifts, failures into success, the unexpected into perfect timing, and mistakes into important events. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow. - Melodie Beattie

You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go…

“The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places.” - Ernest Hemingway

"If you're going through hell, keep going" - Churchill

"If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward." - Martin Luther King

"Know the difference between a catastrophe and an inconvenience. To realize that it’s just an inconvenience, that it is not a catastrophe, but just an unpleasantness, is part of coming into your own, part of waking up." - Bruce Lee

MrsWembley · 16/05/2014 09:21

And two incredibly beautiful poems!

MrsWembley · 16/05/2014 09:18

Yes, Easter, beautifully put.Smile

Waltermittythesequel · 16/05/2014 09:16

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,

When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit-
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,

As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a fellow turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out.
Don't give up though the pace seems slow -
You may succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than

It seems to a faint and faltering man;
Often the struggler has given up
Whe he might have captured the victor's cup;
And he learned too late when the night came down,
How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out -

The silver tint in the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It might be near when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit -
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

Waltermittythesequel · 16/05/2014 09:15

Bow your head and weather the storm
For after the night there is always morn

I don't know if you're into God but my mum always says

If God bring you to it
He will bring you through it

And what's that don't quit poem thingy?

TereseaGreen · 16/05/2014 09:11

My grandmothers favourite.
"It is only in darkness that we see the stars"

NotScroogeMcDuck · 16/05/2014 09:11

I am finding so much comfort in all these. Thank you everyone.

barneychuckles · 16/05/2014 09:07

Might not be 100% right for your situation but these are some of my favourite sayings:-

Life is unfolding perfectly.
As one door closes another opens.
Nobody has died.
I'm still alive.
Things can only get better.

It may not seem like it at the moment but there is a reason that you have this problem. You will either learn from it or it will lead onto something bigger and better.

Trooperslane · 16/05/2014 09:06

If you're going through hell, keep going.

Very hard position op ThanksWine

Gadgettherobot · 16/05/2014 09:03

Say not the Struggle Naught availeth, Arthur Hugh Clough

SAY not the struggle naught availeth,
The labour and the wounds are vain,
The enemy faints not, nor faileth,
And as things have been they remain.

If hopes were dupes, fears may be liars;

It may be, in yon smoke conceal'd,
Your comrades chase e'en now the fliers,
And, but for you, possess the field.

For while the tired waves, vainly breaking,
Seem here no painful inch to gain,

Far back, through creeks and inlets making,
Comes silent, flooding in, the main.

And not by eastern windows only,
When daylight comes, comes in the light;
In front the sun climbs slow, how slowly!

But westward, look, the land is bright!

TheTravellingLemon · 16/05/2014 08:54

Everyone is posting such lovely supportive words. You are a kind bunch. Now for my words of wisdom for when a situation moves beyond your control...

Chuck it in the fuck it bucket.

I'm not really a swearer, but this always cheers me a little.

Smile
awaynboilyurheid · 16/05/2014 08:46

Easter that is lovely x

lentilpot · 16/05/2014 08:46

Everything will be ok in the end... If it's not ok then it's not the end.

MrsWembley · 16/05/2014 08:46

I don't know if this will help, as it's not exactly an 'it'll be all right' quote, but I was once told it when I was a teenager and have pretty much tried to live by it ever since. If it's news that has you worried then try it.Smile

There are two ways of looking at a problem; either you can do something about it, in which case, do it and stop worrying, or you can't, in which case, find a way around it and stop worrying.

It must be horrible not being able to talk about it. Never mind us nosy gits, just do what you need to do.Smile

EasterSundaySimmons · 16/05/2014 08:25

Hold on.

The feelings you fear you’re trapped in will serve their purpose, and then fade away.

Hard to imagine isn’t it? Almost impossible to believe when every cell in your body seems to cry out in agony, desperately in need of comfort. When it feels like the only thing in the whole world that can touch your pain and banish it is beyond your grasp.

And after all this time, the assurance that you will heal has become an empty broken promise. Just let one tiny cell in your body continue to believe in the promise of healing. Just one. You can surrender every other cell to your despair.

Just that one little cell of faith that you can heal and be whole again is enough to keep you going, is enough to lead you through the darkness. Although it can’t banish your suffering, it can sustain you until the time comes for you to let your pain go. And the letting go can only occur in its own time, as much as we would like to push the pain away forever.

Hold on. Hold on to appreciate the beauty of the earth, to feel the songs of the birds in your heart, to learn and to teach, to laugh a genuine laugh, to dance on the beach, to rest peacefully, to experience contentment, to want to be no other place but in the here and now, to trust in yourself, and to trust your life.

Hold on because it’s worth the terrible waiting. Hold on because you are worthy. Hold on because the wisdom that will follow you out of this darkness will be a tremendous gift.

Hold on because you have so much love and joy waiting to be experienced.
Hold on because life is precious, even though it can bring terrible losses.
Hold on because there is so much that you can not imagine waiting ahead on your journey – a destiny that only you can fulfill.

Hold on although you’re exhausted and your grasp is shaky, and you want more than anything to let go sometimes.
Please hold on.

So much in life can be difficult, even impossible to understand.

And the light, the light at the end of the dark tunnel for so long cannot be seen, although eventually you’ll begin to feel it’s warmth as you move forward. And forward you must move in order to get through the hell of remembering, of despair, of rage, of grief. Keep looking forward, please.

Rest if you must, doubt your ability to survive the journey if you have to, but never let go of the guide ropes, although when you close your fingers around them, your hands feel empty, they are there. Please trust me, they are there.

GirlsTimesThree · 16/05/2014 08:22

Mine is 'There's always a way forward. It might mean taking a detour from the most straightforward path, but it will still take you forward'.

Tootssweet · 16/05/2014 08:18

My lovely DM has a whole cupboard full of these kind of phrases she trots out when times are rough. The one that has stuck is 'what's for you won't pass you by' or 'get on with it - you're a long time dead'

Don't know if either of those are any use to you! They're not always cheering (or appropriate, but that's another thread!). Hope you get through this ok op
