Things you used to think and now can't quite believe you did

I saw a seagull flying and it suddenly occurred to me that when I was little, I thought there were two different types of seagulls. Ones with legs, and ones without. Naturally the ones with legs had no choice but to fly all the time Grin

I was a pretty bright child, I can't imagine why I thought that.

Please tell me someone else out there thought the same?

When I was a very tiny Cailleach, say about three years of age, I firmly believed that colour did not exist until recent times, and that the world had been once black and white.

Why else would there be black and white photos and films?

I used to think that if someone went into a coma, they went into something that looked like an iron lung.

In my defence, I was about 9. A girl in my year had 'gone into a coma' and I didn't understand the concept or the consequences. I vaguely remember the girl. I was always impressed by the way she beat the shit out of arseholes with her crutches, and couldn't understand why her egg was sellotaped on during the egg and spoon race. And why the grown ups dabbed their eyes during the race.

Just joining the ranks of those who believed CentreParcs were all under big domes!!

Oh and for a long time as a child I though Christmas was on 24th December, not really sure why though, but I remember being disappointed when I found out that it's actually on the 25th.

You'd be surprised at the number of adults who believe that if a cow has horns it must be a bull! (Frequent misconception heard at farm open days)

Housemum · 17/05/2014 14:16

I had a book of Disney stories when I was little, one was called "Donald Goes to Disneyland" and he took Hughie, Dewie and Louis to a place called Disneylad where there was a Dumbo ride, cars for kids to drive, a place with dolls of the world - I was convinced it didn't really exist! (To be fair, I only ever knew one girl at school who had been abroad on holiday, she went to Torremolinos 'cos she was rich, so Disneyland might as well have been a fairy story).

LauraChant · 17/05/2014 10:03

I am loving the number of people who, like me, thought it was possible and economically viable for Centre Parcs to construct a massive climate controlled see through dome which would let in sunlight but keep out rain, sci fi stylez.

TalisaMaegyr · 17/05/2014 09:31

The swimming pool complex is under an all-weather dome. The rest of the site is just normal outside!

Hushabyelullaby · 17/05/2014 09:09

Another one here who thought Centre Parcs was under a big dome

ChasedByBees · 17/05/2014 08:37

I thought centre parcs too! I'm sure it was on an advert. In fact, are you sure it doesn't??

Hushabyelullaby · 17/05/2014 00:34

I didn't know until last year, at the age of 38 that the cartoon character Yosemite Sam, isn't actually called Simmity Sam. I just thought that people would always say hello to him by saying 'yo, Simmity Sam' and that Yosemite is actually pronounced Yo Simmity Blush

ballsballsballs · 16/05/2014 23:41

I used to think that about Centre Parcs too. Blush

I used to believe that Colgate toothpaste was mined in West Sussex. Thanks Mum. Hmm

Bumpsadaisie · 16/05/2014 23:16

I thought that about Centre Parcs too! Where on earth did the idea come from?

BreconBeBuggered · 16/05/2014 23:16

I'm quite distressed about the Center Parcs dome. So why do people go?

MrsBodger · 16/05/2014 23:10

So . . . there is no dome at Centre parks . . . ?

UnknownGnome · 16/05/2014 23:03

What a great thread. I can relate to a lot of these theories and I've leant how to pronounce Arkansas Smile

I used to believe that when people worked they were paid their whole salary in one go and had to make it last the year.

Pimpf · 16/05/2014 21:39

Oops, did not mean to do that in upper case, not shouting honest!

Pimpf · 16/05/2014 21:39

OH WOW, FORGOT ABOUT THAT BUT I ALSO USED TO THINK THAT ABOUT CENTRE PARCS

minipie · 16/05/2014 13:51

I used to think that about Centreparcs too Laura - I think it was because of their slogan "the British holiday the weather can't spoil" - maybe I assumed there must be a dome if they could promise that...

PunkHedgehog · 16/05/2014 11:42

Yes lillamyy, you're right - Arkansas is pronounced AH-kn-saw.

LauraChant · 16/05/2014 09:57

I used to believe that CenterParcs or however they spell themselves were all entirely contained beneath a huge plastic dome, woodland, chalets and all.

I also read a book when I was young that was supposed to be some kind of satire on the footballing world, except it was about gymnasts - they were signed up young, paid millions, transferred, were really famous like pop stars. Knowing nothing about gymnastics I assumed the book reflected reality and that was how it was for gymnasts. For many years.

Timetoask · 16/05/2014 06:39

When I was little I used to think that babies were made by just kissing. Whenever I went to a wedding and the couple kissed each other at the end I was convinced a baby would show up in 9 months. I remember thinking that I will not kiss my new husband after the wedding because I didn't want a baby straight away (that's early family planning for you)

When I started my periods, one month it was a bit delayed and my best friend tricked me into thinking that too much sugar can make you pregnant. I was horrified for days wondering how I would explain to my parents that the baby coming was due to excess sugar and nothing else!

ChasedByBees · 16/05/2014 06:11

Thanks Trucha Grin

GinUtero · 16/05/2014 00:15

When I was little and my goldfish died, my mum flushed it down the toilet. For years afterwards, I used to think that when people died they got flushed away.

Trucha10 · 15/05/2014 22:46

Am delurking thanks to Chasedbybees - funniest thing I've read EVER.

Infernal · 15/05/2014 22:05

Neil Diamond singing Reverend in Blue Jeans sang along for years til my son told me otherwise, Bless.
